    An Epic Adventure

    Hello folks,

Call me mad call me crazy but I am on a mission. Ever since I had moved into my new flat I now have the opportunity to restart my hobby in general and inflict epic for the first time on my unsuspecting friends.

The plan is not one, not two but three epic armies. These are Imperial Guard, Space Marines and Orks so anyone can visit, pick up an army and get gaming.

There are other things that need doing. I need a gaming table, I need terrain and I will need a workbench (great being in a new flat and having no furniture!).

Anyhow, enough babbling and on with the show.

As some may have seen from the epic forums I recently sold my soul and brought some steel legion from GW so when the fateful package arrived lets see what I got.

My freebie was a pair of dwarf Runesmiths, not sure how they are going to fit into this project (epic Squat statue?).

First unit up cleaned and ready for assembly is my Leman Russ Tank Company. I like these models but I find they lack the versatility of the multipart kits, still they clean up well and should not take too long to paint.

    Re: An Epic Adventure

Time for an update and a look at what arrived in the post on Friday:

After I had finished bouncing around like a 10 year old I opened her up to find a complete copy of the Epic 40,000 game with nothing missing. Even better the Ruined buildings were still on their sprues.

Anyhow today is going to be an Ork day but first here is a glance of my temporary work area.

I hope in the next few weeks I can get a nice sturdy desk and move the operation to there but until then on with the show.

The Ork bits combined with what I already had has gone together to make a fairly sizeable army. Kudos goes to the previous owner as he had the patience to clean and undercoat his models which will save me a job. some models he did not do however were the bikes so I have assembled and cleaned what I had.

The bases is thick card I brought at the local art store. After cutting to size (20mm x 40mm) I bevelled the edges with a file and removed the plastic base of the bikes so they sit flush.

I still need either 6 more bikes or some Wartrak's/buggies so I am keeping my eyes glued to Ebay.

Question. How do you get a big gunz mob if you are too tightfisted to pay for them?

Answer. perform some surgury! (orky spelling) on some shooty boyz and turn them into big gunz

I was quite happy the way these turned out. Using the gun of the shooty boy and cutting the boy out I used some back wheels of of the old ork battlewagon and bits of spue for a limber bar. Couple of grotz on the base and an impression mold made out of greenstuff to create the hubcap effect finished the model. Lets hope they paint up well.

Just as I'm starting to consider Epic seriously, a log like this comes along and I like what I see here.

Congrats on the good Ebay find, and your Big Gun conversions are sweet!

    Looking forward to more.

    Re: An Epic Adventure

Ok ok, You asked for some paint well here you go:

Black undercoat followed by a few thin layers of Desert Yellow (does not covery well). A slightly thinned down brown ink (I mix my own as I dont have any brown atm) followed by a light drybrush of desert yellow. Apply some Goblin Green splodges and then go over them in dark geen ink for definition. Lightly drtbrush the entire model with Bleached bone (very very light, you want the hint of an edge).

Metalics are Black and chainmail followed by a watered down black ink and the rolls are Dark flesh followed by brown ink.

One down eight to go, The journey continues...

Zing, ten points to the poor soul currently lost in the warp (AKA stranded in gsy)

I love the hvy guns. Sucha neat idea. I've got a fair few wagons, so maybe I will steal the idea. I'm planning on using my shock attack guns also, they count as big right?

I'm sad that the blister of characters is in a blister... I always imagined it to be a big kinder egg style affair... don't ask me why!

Paint job is v tasty too. Clean neat and attractive, but quick enough to allow you to build up the force quickly.

Glad the ball is really starting to role in the epic forums...

    Congrats.

    Re: An Epic Adventure

OK Folks as promised here is the update.

So far my Imperial Guard have progressed well.

So far I have completed a formation and a half (chimera's for the Regimental HQ are still being worked on).

Even so, I have managed to work a fair bit into the two units as the next pixtures will show.

Here is a better look at the infantry platoon, Ive gone for a basic scheme to keep a clean, unified look to the army.

Here is the Regimental HQ himself with his retinue.

And Finally my Leman Russ Tank Company is finished. Still deciding wether I should add whip antenna or not, what do you think.

Coming up will be the regimental HQ Chimera's, a Basilsk company I got from Ebay and my second Infantry formation.

Next week was going to be an Ork week but I think I will push that back a bit and round out the guard some more. Also the Orks are 60 bases strong now so I am going to need alot of spare time to do them and as I am on holiday the first week of May then it may as well be then.

    Re: An Epic Adventure

I like your armies so far GP, nice freehand on the banner

The formation of Leman Russ' look kind of cute because they're so tiny! The camoflage is painted well too. The colours well together and I eagerly await more.

*EDIT* I forgot to mention I whole heartedly agree with your sig, Mike Walker was hilarious in his quirky articles of White Dwarf of years gone *nostalgic tear*

Your Guard stuff is really nicely painted, well done!

Great to see more people getting in to Epic (possibly the best game in the world )

Looking good on the army so far, I think you should try a whip aerial, could look very good.

And, quick question. Do the current epic rules require vehicles to be based? I only ask as most people seem to base them now, but back in the 90's I never did and it was very rare.

    Re: An Epic Adventure

No no need to base the models at all. I based my tanks for 2 reasons,

    1. To give the army a more unified look on the tabletop.

    2. to protect both the model and the table from wear (my Table surface will be fine silica sand which is very abrasive)

    Re: An Epic Adventure

Looking very tasty so far. (Damn you for painting stuff faster than me... despite me not having a job!!!)

I also say yay to whip ariels, just another layer of detail...
My chimeras are getting them so I have somewhere tp put the flags.

Whats up next? Maybe some basilisks?

I got my cult of speed yesterday, and am trying to resist the urge to bust them open and start painting... one thing at a time!

Good job mister, looking forward to the next batch.

    Cheers.
