Very nice painting there. Clean and neat. The only thing I'd like to suggest is addings a bit more of highlights. The tanks, especially the black parts of them, still look a bit lifeless. I think you prefer the clean look on a tabletop army (as do I) so I suggest adding some scribblings and markings on the tank.

I like the bases you do. Intersting but not too overdone on colour or too busy with stuff. Those little conversions you did are very well done too and not too obvious or gaudy either. Keep up the good work!

AMAZEING XD. I love your conversions, they give the army a much more ancient feel to them. My ONLY qualm is that you are painting your skin in the new fluff way of being coal black with red eyes I was hopeing that we could all rebel against it and get a black buddies back.

PS: any tips on makeing greenstuff fire??

    Re: Salamanders Rekindled

Gibbtall, nice to see a fellow Salamander brother. I've been following your thread, you do amazing work. Yeah, I'm not too thrilled over the new fluff for the Sallies. I've always painted them as being black but not actually the color black. But it is what it is.

As for green stuff fire I can give what pointers I can. I've accumilated a number of sculpting tools over the years and having the right tool for the job makes a huge difference. Basically I have two methods for sculpting flames. For small flames like knee pads and helmets you smooth out a small blob (let the blob sit on the metal/plastic for a few minutes to give it time to stick), cut into it, and push the green stuff side to side with a small flat blade until you have the flame shape. For larger flames like for shoulder pads or vehicles you smooth out a thin layer and carve out the flames with a sharp tool. Then push the flames into shape. The important thing is to keep your tools wet while sculpting, this keeps the green stuff from sticking to your tools and gives you better control. You can use either water or (in my case) spit, which ever you prefer. Good luck!

    Re: Salamanders Rekindled

Awsome, sounds easy enough. I personaly havn't tried ot yet, I want to get the bulk of my army down before I get in to too many flourishes. As for tools, I bought a nice set of wax spulting tools a while back, and they've proven to be perfect for the greenstuff sculpting job. Now maybe I'll be able to forgoe those expensive Forgeworld vehicle doors, at least for a while :P

I very much enjoyed your pun in the thread title, and your liberal use of studded armour on the sallies. Great work! will keep an eye on the thread!

    Re: Salamanders Rekindled

Vulkan be praised! Fantastic work on your Salamanders, your sculpting work is fresh, it really goes well with the Sallies smithy characteristic. I also like the green you've used on the armor, not as flashy as some (I'll admit I do the bright green meself), but it works. It's like how I'd expect them to look after battle, what with all the flames they'd invariably be around, the armour would be a darker hue.

Any plans on doing a Vulkan He'Stan or Tu'Shan for your boys? As noted, you're sculpting is very well done, I'd love to see what you'd cook up for those two bad asses.

    Re: Salamanders Rekindled

A bit of a boring update today. Just a couple of Rhinos for my first two Tactical squads. So I give you the Salamanders' butt-haulers Anvil and Firefang.

And yes, Vulkan He'Stan and Tu'Shan will be making a presence in this army, but will be later projects. I'll be either using the Captain Lysander or the Chaos Terminator Lord as the basis for Tu'Shan in all his dual thunderhammer wielding goodness. That will be a fun project.

Excellent work. I have three battle companies myself, and elements of the 1st, 5th and 7th. I've been building them (if not playing them all the time) since RT was released. As I say, most excellent work there. Keep it up!

They have 7 Companies, with 120 Marines in each one. Smallest Scout Company known with only 60.

Re: Salamanders Rekindled- Now with Termites!

So I started a new modeling project over the weekend, one I had been mulling around in my head for a while. In keeping with the traditions of the Salamanders I've been trying to limit the use of jump packs, landspeeders, bikes, and things that happen to fall from the skies.

My plan was to have my two assault squads tooling around in Rhinos but the idea of Deepstriking them was too tempting. So what kind of land base vehicle was there that could deploy troops behind enemy lines? Luckily this question already had an answer: Termites!

For those of you too young to know the Termite was an Imperial squad carrying vehicle that tunneled beneath the ground in the old Epic days (they also had a bigger one called the Hellebore). But the question for me has been how to do the tunneling bit up front. The old model had a big auger bit, which looked a little too cartoony in my opinion and actual tunnel borers looked (excuse the pun) a little boring. So I compromised:

Things are still loosely put together but it gives you the idea. The center bit has a stone burner within the center that would actually do most of the tunneling work. The teeth would then grind up whatever is left. I'm building two so my plan is to have one of these with the center bit extended and open so you can see the burner little better and the other one with the bit fully retracted.

The last part is the main body of the tunneler. Right now it's still very much a work in process. There will be tracks on three sides of the body and a set of doors on the two exposed sides. In game terms it will have the same rules as a drop pod, except it will come from the ground instead of the sky (won’t that confuse the enemy).

There's still a lot of work to do but I'll keep you guys posted.

This idea looks AWSOME, I can totaly imagine a loud rumbling followed by a blast of flame and molten earth bursting from the ground, then spewing out a big heap of dirty twisting metal :P Amazeing sculpting as well, nice and presice.

    Re: Salamanders Rekindled

So I finally finished the modeling of my two Imperial Termites, and personally I think they turned out pretty good. Just the kind of thing you'd expect to find gathering dust in the ancient vault of a Space Marine fortress or crawling around in the sand dunes of Arakis. Next is to finish assemble, base them up, and slap on some Salamander livery.

Well I got them all based up and ready to go. I mounted them on some hardboard and loaded the bases with marble chips, ballast, sand, and little bits of war debris. Now comes the paint.
