Thread: In space, no one can hear you Scratchbuild!

Allthough some of the pics are blurry the Kroozers seem to be quite nice.

I still have to figure out how to take good pictures of miniatures. My camera is very sensitive for movement, so even when I push the button it moves a tiiiiiiiiiiiiny bit and the pic becomes blurry.

increase your shutter speed. that or see if your camera has a "sport" setting and then turn that on

Still WIP but couldn't hold back.

Two Merchantmen/Lorcha and One Trade Galleon/Merchantmen. Still looking at how they translate best. The larger one has only a little less mass then a Chaos cruiser but more then a light cruiser. They actually look like 7hp and 5hp ships....

They are build from Imperial Navy (AdMech) bits and Chaos bits plus Space Marine stuff (shoulderpads and backpacks).

These ships are based on the same buildings as the Angelic I posted previously.

    Hope you like 'em.

The tank tread scratch builds are ingenius - kudos to all who've posted them.

I'm desperate to try, but whence can you get the treads, saving buying tanks, which seems to kind of defeat the purpose. As a non 40k player, it might be that treads are standard bitz item...

Horizon: I also adore your merchantmen; I have no idea how you constructed them and they look amazing finished like that. Using SM backpacks is something I've been wanting to try for a while now, but I can't even see how you've incorporated them. How do you build your ships?

I'm a large fan of warp Rift, btw, some great rules and inspiration.

If ArtificerArmour is still around, as a budding DE BFGer, I've thought of using jetbikes as cruisers...

However, Niibl, you just made me desperate to scratchbuild a fleet I've only had passing interest in...So incredible...It's lego...

Re: In space, no one can hear you Scratchbuild!

This is a cool thread, I love tinkering with stuff from my bitz box! Must say this has given me a whole load of ideas, some really nice work from everyone here.
Easy E, I've enjoyed your scratch building before, good stuff getting this thread up and running! I have posted links to some of my Ork ships, hope they work (more importantly I hope you guys comment on them!)...

    Here's another Terror Ship...

I have to secod th Kudos of all of your scratchbuilders. Nice stuff, it makes me feel ashamed sometimes. However, I'm too busy terrorizing the space lanes to think about it much.

I really like this thread, especially those two tyranid hive ships...complete inspiration for my next project...i have some home made terrain...well just asteroids made from plaster paris. I'll post some pics on this thread when i do my Hive ship and Krakens.

Edit: Originally for my daemons of Chaos, but i think with some work on them they will make perfect Kraken ships

Re: In space, no one can hear you Scratchbuild!

Eewwww, nice n gribbly! I think those l'il fellas will be great counts as for any Tyranid escort with feeder tentacles. Yuck, repel boarders!

Actually, I remember someone on these hallowed forum pages made assault boats out of the vents from SM backpacks and DE spikey bits... Just a random idea there!

So yes, today I was nearly tempted into assaulting my local model shop (scale modelling, I am not a sex fiend) for various tubes and styrene sheets. I wanna make Imperial cruisers now, curse you all! I will do it on Monday, that way I can loot my workplace for suitable pen bits

Seriously tho, we rock, let's keep these scratchbuilding updates going! I will try and get my Hammer BC painted up this week.

Re: In space, no one can hear you Scratchbuild!

Here are a couple of Imperial escort ships I put together using some plastic barricade I found (!) and a few pieces of sprue leftovers and Tiger tank tracks. Not bad at all for an evenings work, I would like to use them as system defence ships or an alternative to Cobras...

What do you guys think, any good? Please ignore the Ork Rok in the background that looks like a human head

I like em, Jihad. Definately good models to represent system defense ships. I didn't even recognize the sprue until I zoomed in on the image. Nice use of bits and good paintjob.

and btw, the link to your ravager attack ships appears to be broken.

Hey thanks, man, at some point I will try to churn out a whole fleet of Imps from scratch but who knows when that will happen...

I have now applied my Grots to repair the links, please do not eat them until their work is finished

    *Nom, nom, nom*

Kronos, I'm looking forward to seeing those tyranids painted up. I've noticed the plastic chaos possessed sprue has a lot of neat little tyranid-looking bits as well.

Here's four Tau escorts me and my brother threw together a while ago. One pair uses a couple of 40K Tau missiles as a base, and the other two are made from the bodies of burst cannons with a couple of shield generators stuck on the front.

These ideas are genius, and a constant source of inspiration for me.

Jihad_Ragsta, I love those ork ships; the Ravagers look amazing painted! I've no idea how you built them. Those barricade imperials are pretty clever too.

@ Kronos: Those Kraken look great too.

Those Tau look authentically Tau...I really like them.

At first I was skeptical of your sculpts, Easy E, but they're growing on me quite heavily.

I'm still mystified by Horizon's merchantmen...

How do you normally source treads for ship building? And, knowing little about miniatures tanks, do you think GW treads are necessary?

One day I'd like to post something here.

Cheers Sclep, it can be difficult to make Tau ships look appropriately 'Tau-ish', but the 40K range has alot of spare little bits and peices if you look hard enough.

Re: In space, no one can hear you Scratchbuild!

Here are two Dauntless cruisers I just made.

The core is lego with 1 1/2 weapons batteries down the sides. The prows were carved from a block of sprue offcuts glued together in a big block then hacked into a shoe shape. Putty and filing to smooth. I then decided to give them a bit of detail by glueing on thin wire.

This was the most frustrating scratchbuild ever. I'd rather stab my eyes out than make symetrical curved prows again.

Re: In space, no one can hear you Scratchbuild!

@Sclep, Eater of small things and Jihad_ragsta, thanks for the comments, though they might not make it into the fleet, i found a very suitable alternative for Kraken ships, with feeder tendrils...Bloodletter heads (without the faces. Not really a scratchbuild just an alternative....I'll post my Hive ship once it arrives and is finished..anyway new Kraken.

edit: forgot to mention, all of you making Imperial ships..wow, just wow... I'll stick to giant organic life forms atm. I don't think i would have the patience to make "man made" ships. And Burnthem, those are some nice looking Tau conversions there.
