Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

what an inspirational thread- like many other users i've just spent days wading through the 500 pages of awesome.

i've got a little something to add, i'm new to warseer, new to 40k (well, i played from '93 to '98), and new to guard. so without any further ado, here's my first ever tank, and my first real model in 13 years.

i pretty much hated the stock basilisk model, so i've reworked a lot of it- scratch built track guards and platform, boxed in the side hatches and got rid of as many skulls as possible. added a forgeworld gun shield, and had to build a HB from odds and ends since it doesn't seem to come with the kit.
i'm really pleased with the remade platform- i didn't care for the mesh style tread plate on it, and thought the central ladder a bit odd. i also added a raised edge so that any dropped tools etc wouldn't roll off the platform onto the earth below. i'm in two minds as to weather i want to shorten the gun barrel or not.

i've got a heap of stowage to put on after i start painting, and the treads will go on after a basecoat is applied. i can't wait to get painting on this, see if my skills are anything like they used to be (i know my eyes arent)

When I started it was just collecting, then I played a game and got hooked. The army quickly went from a battleforce and a tank to what you see now, and painting ended up back seat.

@juxt: Really like the re-build of the fighting platform and the rear track guards.

But the FW gun shield looks way too small. All it seems to do is reduce access to the elevation and recoil mechanisms without actually protecting anything. I expect better from them.

@juxt: I'll second SanguinaryDan's comments. Also, I really like the ladder/steps on your track guard. It really looks great - I don't know what your models looked like before, but this is a great start. As far as shortening the barrel... perhaps you could find an insert to take out or leave in at will, giving you the option of fielding it as a Medusa or Basilisk. In general, I find Medusas to be more useful on the tabletop... all the Basilisk has going for it is range, which is a non-issue on a 4' x 6' tabletop.

    @JUXT:
Nice work on the model. Subtle conversions and very cleanly done!
I love the thing, nothing to add. I can't wait to see it painted.

thanks for the encouraging replies guys
in hindsight the gunshield is a tad on the small size- partially because on my rebuilt platform the gun and carriage sit about 1.5mm higher up than they do on the original kit. so the impracticality issues don't rest entirely with forgeworld's design.
i've decided that i'm going to leave the long barrel on this one, after seeing pictures of the real life 17pdr valentine, i don't have a problem suspending my disbelief over the lines of the bassie anymore.

A new Demolisher. I think my sub-conscious wants to build a Squadron of each type just in time for them to release a brand new MBT. It may be a sickness, but I'm sure enjoying the symptoms.

That's exactly where it's from. I had to use the mk.I Russ turret bottom to make a ring that would fit, but otherwise it was way too cool not to use. I'm going to use a FW Vanquisher turret on my Mortian so that it can pass as a Command Russ. At least until I build a decent twin BC (or Gatling Blaster? Nah. No one in their right mind would ever allow one of those -monsters in a normal rules game.) turret to make it Macharius #2.

I wonder if Heavy Support would sell turrets separately? Then I'd grab a few more and see how they look with the various Russ weapons.

    Time to send an email.

Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

Some time ago, I saw a scratch-built alternate turret design for the Chimera... it incorporated a standard hatch off-set to the side, and used a Sentinel multi-laser and a heavy stubber co-axially mounted in a CROWS-type automated mount, with smoke launchers between the two weapon systems. I saved the pictures for reference, but I neglected to include a link... does any of this sound familiar?

If I recall correctly, the same individual converted an Officer of the Fleet to look like Peter Cushing/Moff Tarkin, if that helps jog anyone's memory. I'm trying to find the owner/designer to see if there are templates or better pictures.

sweet, I really should look into this thread more often

I'm currently repainting my tanks, because I finally got an airbrush. I'll post up a few WIPs and I'd like to have some comments or recommendations.
