Rifling is actually the spiral twist inside the gun barrel that spins the sheel to improve it's rnage and accuracy. What you're thinking about is a recouperator...

I also agree the barrel is way off. I'd suggest scrounging an Earthshaker cannon from somewhere and using that (perhaps you could buy a Basilisk and Covert it into a Griffon if you don't have one already - I'm sure self propelled artillery would look really cool on those converted chassis).
Power Armour is for Wimps! Real men go into battle out of the back of a Valkyrie at 500 feet.

Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

Thanks for the clarification Getz. I figured that rifling was also the spiral design inside the barrel to spin the shell, but for some reason I always associated artillery rifling with recouperated guns as well. You learn something new all the time in this thread!

What an extremly cool thread, i'm amazed i never noticed it before. When i find space to get out all my guard (i want to do a full inventory, i have stuff i dont remember buying turning up in the bitz boxes) i'll have to post some piccies (and work out how to put them onto here).

Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

I've been a fan of this thread for months and have been inspired by it's contributors. I wish that I had something to offer other than a question. Even if I'm not much help atleast I put this thread back on pg #1, LOL.

Here's the real reason I'm posting, I'm stuck on how to paint the details of a Commissar tank for my Armored Co..

I figured that I'd just go to the source of all things armored and ask.

My Commissar's tank has had a few additions- courtesy of the SoB Immolator sprue. They take the form of small plates depicting various Saints, I guess they're saints. The tank has a plate on it's turret, as if it were a shrine. The other plates are located on the front hull.

Now, here's where I'm stuck. The tank itself is black, the trimmings and icons are painted in a brassy-gold.

These plates that I mentioned, should they be painted to resemble some sort of stone/marble, should I continue with the brassy-gold or a mixture of both?

@ no-use4a-name: let's get a picture of where it is at now so we can make a proper judgement. The Marble look may break up the flat colors of those areas, or it maybe to jarring. A picture would help us determine. By the way, the use of the Saint's Plates is a great idea!

@ Malan Kharn- Can we get a closer look at the converted tank. It was in the second picture and has the double tracks. Thanks.

Edit: Can someone fill me in on a Chimeradon? Are there any IA rules for it? Where can I find more information?

@Easy E, I'm horrible at taking photos. The gaming club I belong to has a photo studio set up. Once I get a chance to go there I'll take the picts and post 'em here.

Just be aware...they'll probably be some poorly taken picts. I should be able to do this in a week or so. I just didn't want to halt my progress. That's why I asked w/o showing any photos.

Some very interesting conversions there, always love originality in armies. Whats that flier in the first picture based off, looks awfully familliar dont know where ive seen it from though.

The front is a Cobra Gunship (us navy helicopter if memory serves) and the back is an up-turned tau hammerhead front. It was designed to be a USMC drop ship from aliens, but it has the right loadout to be a vulture, so that's what i use it as.

Feel free to look around, there are a couple of newer piccies of some of the conversions. More to follow.

I would if I could, I don't think you have set the album up for public viewing...which is a shame as I am very interested in having a look.

The Chimeradon was a chimera variant released during the Titan Legions game era of epic-ness. The rules weren't in the game itself or the suppliment "armies of the imperium", but were printed, along with the background in a white dwarf some time ago (ok, a very long time ago). Iirc, the chimeradon replaced its multilaser with a battle cannon, but still could carry two stands of infantry (10 guys). Bear in mind that back then battle cannon was a generic name for any large~ish bore cannon.

There have never been any official rules for the chimeradon in 40k. A good suggestion would be use the conqueror cannon rules for it, rather than an actual battle cannon.

Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

@ EvilHomer- Thanks. The reason I ask is I see an easy conversion opportunity and was curious as to what it does. Thanks for letting me know it could still carry troops.

Here is the stats I VDR'ed.

    Chimeradon 150pts.
    Front Side Rear BS
    12 10 9 3

    Type:
    Tank Size:
    Normal
    Speed:
    Normal

    Weapons:
    1 x Battle cannon
    1 x Heavy bolter
    Special Options:
    Transport 10
    Amphibious
    Vehicle Category:
    Heavy Support

Unfortunately, the VDR I used did not have the Conqueror Cannon listed as a weapon option. Secondly, do you still think a Chimeradon would be amphibious?

Don't see why not, may not be as stable being so top heavy, but its still the same chasis, and its still watertight.

IRRC there were a bunch of variants with different weapon arrangements on the turret. I seem to remember Chimerax and Chimerro at least. If you can find some really old catalogues just have a look through them.

Shame the VDR rules won't allow you to add blast to a weapon unless you're a super-heavy, then it'd be a simple case of a slow firing blast autocannon . The conqueror also has a co-axle mounted storm bolter (iirc you can also take either a heavy stubber/storm bolter on a pintle mount as well as an upgrade).

As for being amphibious, its the same hull, so I don't see why not. I can see chimeradons being used as transports for tech guard regiments raised from Gryphonne IV.

I definately see the conqueror cannon being able to be mounted on a chimera, especially in 4th edition. The chimerax needs more thought though - probably two twin-linked short barelled autocannon or a gatling short barelled autocannon.

Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

I see I accidentally made the rear armor 9 instead of 10. Woops. I made the armor adjustments, that raised the price to 155 pts.

Any Idea how I would VDR the passenger fired las-guns? I'm thinking right now that I will simply leave those out.

I've learned that a Chimerro had a multi-firing Hunter Killer Missile system. Did it still reatin the Multi-laser/Heavy Bolter set-up?

Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

Over a week ago I posted a a request for some advice. Since then, I've chucked the original Commissar Tank and built a new one. The original will probably see life as either terrain or a demolisher- for those who are interested.

I've also posted these pictures on another forum and was given some really good feedback as to what to do with the front portion of the tank. These picts are a little outdated. Since they were taken, I've drilled the barrels and added some green stuff around the front Heavy Bolter. Here's the link to the new Commissar tank.http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i1...%20Tank%20WiP/ Any feedback as to what to add to the front of the tank would be great. FYI, I want this tank to have the feel of a holy relic issued to a Commissar.

Also, here's a link to the rest of the Armored Co. http://s71.photobucket.com/albums/i148/no-use4a-name/ Feel free to look around.

I think I'd actually lose the stowage as it has the sense of cluttering and taking away from the iconography. Looks good so far, especially the Eagle buttresses.
