The centre is the Thaeton Pattern Defence turret that forge world inexplicably stopped making, along with some bits from the valkyrie and defence line. The guns are a mix of Aegis line and plastic tubing.

The hull is a chimera in both cases, the ragnarock is a bash with a HobbyBoss 1/48 captured KV-2, while the Macharius pattern is bashed (cut & shut with totally reworked detail) from a mortian hull top & is off to the casters next week. I plan to have a full tank company with 3 ragnaroks & 7 mac's.

    Hope you approve.

P.S. sorry the detail is low the camera on my phone isn't up to much, & the shop was full of gretchin as its holiday time!

Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

A fair point, I'll do my best to answer it...

The part your referring to is I think the Mortian hull top, yes?

The hull top has been shortened by at least 3cm, all of the details, fixing brackets, vents & engine have been removed. The deck plating & rivets were all re-done to mimic the Macharius not the Mortian, & the engine rear was flattened (and lengthened). The front of the hull was re-angled, re-plated, hand riveted and modified to fit the cab of the chimera. The turret ring was moved backwards by 5mm, raised by 3mm & re-bored to accept the forgeworld ryza /krieg pattern turrets and finally the underside off the hull was thinned so it shimmied into the rear deck of the chimera. I'll happily admit to using the bare bones of the hull ( which I could have made using the rapid Prototyper in the next lab ), and a few GW bits. The only referance pictures used throughout were of the Macharius superheavy itself, the intention was never to rip-off the mortian (which is 1.5 times the size of the Chimera/Russ), only to produce a piece that would allow an easy conversion from a chimera to a low profile russ. I leave it to you guys to judge wether I'm guilty of IP theft (actual or moral) and i'll abide by that and only cast them for myself if you feel I have.

Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

    I agree with tinners,

If you had made the whole thing yourself, to look a bit like a smaller mortarion, there would be no major issue.

however, if i read you correct you used a modified actual mortarion hull for the basis?
modifying it a little does not stop it being someone elses work, and as such should not be cast for re-sale

also, you are using GW bits too?, thats just asking for trouble if you try to sell these.

you look to have the skills to make the whole thing yourself, if you want to sell them, i'd advise you make every part yourself, rather than risk someone setting a pack of lawyers on you.

yes, you'd have to start over, but the chances are you'll have learnt things from the first one and so make the 2nd even better.

Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

I've been a wraith on this thread for many many months now, and have always felt bad about not posting something yet. Thank you all for the constant new ideas and the huge boost to my confidence that this thread has been. So I began my first 40K Tank, an ebay find, old pattern Catachan Exterminator with the tank rider and cannons in metal. This allowed me my first prereq, which was exterior tracks and guide wheels. The older kit has a lovely amount of detail and was still very easy to construct

    The guide-wheel layout
I had to build up the depth of the guidewheels with plasti-rod (tube) since I was attaching them onto the flatter front surface.

The Kreig filtration and rebreather systems looked very cool so I created my own set based on the pic's etc. I used a round tube which I stuck L-bar sections onto, making sure to keep the bottom angled to suite the slant on the back of the tank, to keep the top of my filter level

This second filter was made with two different diameter's of tube and some small 'I' beam and L-bar for the fitting. The cables are off a las-powerpack for a Sentinel

The turret, with it's new guns and enhanced sensor and targetting system. I cut off the massive 'fake' loop rings and replaced them with wire ones and added extra armour to the frontal plates

These then are the final pic's before going to paint.
All the frakin' rivets added, track guards, plasticard...since the FW ones were soooo warped I just left them in the packet for another day. I made a more snug smoke launcher and added all sorts of gubbins to give the tank a used feel.

If you have external wheels you really need to build in some suspension bogeys otherwise it just looks plain weird.

To be fair...the Mortian tanks (of which I own 3), while great works, are essentially slightly scaled down and slightly modified copies of a Forgeworld Macharius tanks themselves.

Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

I would probably seem self-serving in saying this, but it's none the less valid to say that considering the press-moulding, the re-plating, the re-riveting and alterations to the piece, it is not a copy so much as derivative work from the Mortian pattern tank.

Besides, I think it'd look amusing to have an Exterminator in that layout, with a Macharius Vanquisher beside it.

Re: The Imperial Guard Tread-head thread

Well, the looking similar thing isnt really the issue i'm getting at (thats another dabate entirly, one which i'm not too sure how it works, but i agree i should)

what i and i assume Tinners are getting at is the use of not only an ACTUAL peice from a mortarion, but also GW bits too. Not copies of or inspired from, ACTUAL parts. Selling stuff made from press molds of someone elses stuff is also a no-no.

Now i have no idea if Mort cares, but i'm pretty sure GW would.

look at it another way, if you took a space marine, carved off some details and added some stuff, then started selling them, do you think GW would take action? when its clearly their model you used as a base?
    I'm pretty sure they would.

Also, yes, some of my stuff has obvious inspirations (mainly WW2), will i get upset if someone else makes and sells a similar tigerish style turret? not really, but if someone takes one of mine, mods it (short of totally making it un-recognisable and covering all surfaces) and starts selling them, yes i would take action.

I'll just leave it there i think, i'm not trying to offend, but help a fellow moddeler stay out of trouble.

Lets get back to looking at cool tankses
