The blood looks kinda fake, imho. If you're looking for a more "real" looking blood I'd recommend some tamiya clear red. If not, stick with what you're doing, I really like the kind of rough comic-book style you have going here.

I concur, the blood needs to be a lot darker. I would recommend washing it with dark red and a tad of purple as well to get that really gory vibe.

Re: 1500 points of Chaos - Countdown to completion

Thanks for the comments. They're very helpful, however I'm ready with the excuses (because I basically knew this would come up).
I wasn't sure about posting these photos as they show the interior nicely lit up with one side of the LR missing and the whole thing looks fake that way. For instance, the bases of the columns aren't visible from any open point of view, nor are the bare parts of floor.
Also, very little light will get in there in the end, so I decided against darker blood because that way you would hardly see anything at all. Instead I tried to have the red color as saturated as I could. I actually always try to paint interiors brighter and sharper (Comic book style, thanks 3vilX ) than exteriors, just so that the details stand out in there.
I expect to fix the blood closest to the openings when I've done the exterior and all the blood and gore on the outside, so the whole thing'll match. In the meantime check out the bottom right photo in my last post for what it actually more or less looks like
Lastly I just want to glue this darn thing together and not put any more time into the interior!

Again, your comments are very much appreciated, despite my lame excuses. Thanks 3vilX for checking in on my log and helping out and Mr Feral your comments are always appreciated!
Please check in again once I've done the gore on the outside, and let's see if we can't get that properly realistic.

I just realized that Mr Feral's idea of adding purple to the shades in the red gore scheme is perfect to address the problem Dezmord brought up, to differentiate between the organic red and the red hull color. More on that later...

Re: 1500 points of Chaos - Countdown to completion

    Hey, I'm pretty stoked now!

After all the discussion (so to speak) on how the blood looked fake and how I would pull off two different red schemes I decided to convince myself that I could actually pull off even a single decent red scheme (lately I've been really frustrated with red, aight). I just sat down with my wet palette and all my red, orange and yellowish colors and just mixed until the palette was completely covered in puddles of different shades of red, pink and orange and I had decided on what I wanted to try out. Then I painted the red parts on the standard bearing bloodletter in a hatch, where I could paint both his skin and part of the Land Raiders hull. Here's what I've got so far:

Yes, I took all the fantasy command bits off the bloodletter sprue and put them on this one model!

I think I'll try out that orange-y scheme on the Rhino next, before I commit to it on the Land Raider. It might be a bit too orange, but I will have off-white parts in the mix too so it shouldn't be overwhelming.

C&C and opinions & suggenstions on the reds are super appreciated!

The orangy scheme looks quite nice and I think it won't be too overwhelming if you keep low with the brightest highlights.
The bloodletters skin is stunning! I take it you will use his colourscheme also for the blood? If yes, I'd suggest painting a coat of 'ardcoat over the blood afterwards to give it a nice wet look.

    Thanks Aulbath!
@Dezmord: Thanks man. Yeah, I think the gloss is a good idea. I might experiment a bit more for the blood on the outside but it will be closer to the bloodletter scheme. I'm really happy with the skin color and have to than Mr Feral again for the purple idea. It really deepens the shades without making them dull.

The bloodletter pic was a dead link for a while but I've reloaded it now. More of that mini and the Rhino too tonight!

Thanks man! That's a pretty cool tutorial (and doesn't absolutely need Tamiya clears). I've got a few ancient citadel inks (from the Citadel Expert paint set) so I might give it a try.

Getting a smooth and even basecoat on the Rhino is taking some time but it's looking nice now. Nothing worth a photo really though.

Re: 1500 points of Chaos - Countdown to completion

OK, just so you can se what I've been spending my painting time on:

Thats RMS Blood Red for the basecoats. That's three passes on the Rhino and two on the Land Raider so far. I'll need at least one more on the LR and maybe the fourth on both, at least over the big flat areas. Then I might have to order a new bottle of that paint

Re: 1500 points of Chaos - Countdown to completion

OK, I'm putting much less time into painting than I would have liked. Still, I finished the red base on the Land Raider and highlighted the Rhino. I'll put some shading and semi-blacklining in but this is more or less the red hull scheme.

Good enough to take to the Land Raider?

The red looks slightly patchy (particularly in the bottom right picture),but otherwise I would say go for it!

It is the patchy paint I really like. Red often looks patchy in a negative way, but your's looks nice and as if you wanted it to be like that.

Re: 1500 points of Chaos - Countdown to completion

Yeah, the big flat surfaces were a little bit tricky when trying to highlight smoothly. I minimized the problem by being consistent in brush stroke direction and alternating that between passes, so maybe that's why it looks more deliberate Stempe. I hope I can make it look nice when it's shaded a bit and of course when the rest of it's painted.
The Land Raider has less of that problem as the flat areas are not as big and completely unbroken.

    Thanks guys!

The vehicles are looking good, I would paint on a couple more layers of red though.

The raptors turned out great, very inspiring.

It's very interesting how your style and chosen colours are transfering onto tanks, they look very nice so far and I'm looking forward to the finish producted.

The Rhino highlights look great, I wouldn't be concerned about 'patchy' colour on tanks as they do go into battle often and re-painting wouldn't be top priority on the Chaos list me thinks. Though as the other two said it looks rather deliberate as if perhaps demonic possession or some warp presence is showing itself through the armour of the hull. Really nice job.

Looking great so far! I really like the Khornification of those vehicles, and your painting style is working really well on them so far. I'm really looking forward to seeing them finished!
One minor criticism I must bring up as well is the gore. I know it will be almost invisible inside the tank, but still it needs to be darker and more glossy, as has already been said.
That aside, your painting has visibly developed both in style and precision, which makes this one of the most inspiring logs on WarSeer. I'm deeply impressed! Well done, sir!

    Cheers,

Can't believe the huge progress you've made since I first looked (sometime before the raptors), really need to put this log into my subscribed folder so I won't miss this much awesomeness again!

The Khorne stuff is looking great, I feel your pain painting that much red though!

    Keep it up,

Re: Solun Tackles Sanity - Technicolor Night Gobbos en Masse

Thanks Ancre. The moving went well and we're all settled in. I appreciate the nice comment, even though I haven't replied to it in almost eight months now
@jjmaster10: Thanks man. Yeah, I've had some second thoughts with the wolves and will be giving them a reat for a while (an even longer rest than I already have, that is )

I've done some 40K stuff in the meantime but now I've finally got back my urge to paint O&G. It happened like this:
I decided to order a few pots of Reaper Master Series paint, to make my RMS collection a bit more complete, as I had no greens or blues from RMS (my green base color here is GW Snot Green, although I mix with RMS for shades and highlights and most stuff other than skin is RMS). Since I had a relative coming from the states I ordered from the warstore and could save on customs and shipping so I got some O&G minis from Avatars of War (so, so, so cool) and a base color set from Vallejo.
So... the stuff arrived the day before yesterday and I since I've never painted with Vallejo before I just had to try them out. Everyone has been praising them for high pigment value, so i decided they must be great for basecoats and painting stuff fast, which offered a great opportunity to batch paint a bunch of goblins.
I really want to be able to do each shade/highlight layer in a single pass adn the Vallejo paints really help with that. They have great coverage and also a very even dispersion within the brush stroke. Very cool paints indeed.

heres where I'm at right now:

Still WIP, but just details left, basically teeth and weapons (and another ten gobbos for it to be a proper regiment ).
No more excuses for leaving this thread unattended for 8 months, I just hope I'll be here more often in the next few, as I've got some pretty great O&G minis in need of painting.
