@SamVimes: Yeah, the black face idea came from looking at real boar photos. It's true that nature itself gives the best ideas, but in a Fantasy setting you can mix and match ideas from different species too

@azhagmorglum: Thanks! I think animals generally look more interesting with color variations, especially when they're this big. The grey collar seems to work for a menacing look. makes them look old and experienced.

@BeatTheBeat: Thanks man! I think a dark face can serve as a focal point as well, if it's framed in nicely, but in my case the bright one certainly sticks out more. If by serious highlighting you mean bright extreme highlighting, I didn't do that, but I think it's pretty smooth highlighting

Well thank you all for the input. I still had to go ahead and try out the extremes. The one in the middle (top photo) is the first one, notably least smooth face of the three.

The bright one may be over the top bright but it allows for a bit of emphasis on the shading and the ferocious look.

I like the boars, I would use them all 3 in the unit, different mounts work great in an OnG army.

Personally I think the face doesn't work with that color. You've got a tri-colored boar there and nothing really ties that face color in with the rest.

What I would suggest if you want a lighter face is to start off with the highlight color you used on the fur in back. The will make the transition less glaring. Then highlight from there.

No wonder that you thought 2nd ed 40K sucked. You weren't even playing it.

Not a fan of the bright-faced boar, though I do see what kind of effect you're aiming for. Try out Ramius4's suggestion maybe, or (IMO) go with brown/black ones!

They all look great, but personally I prefer the darkest one, although you could perhaps tone down the extreme highlighting on the ears a bit. I think it could work pretty well with some small variations in colours of their faces, but I would really stick to the darker theme.

The bright one reminds me of a boar that's charged head-first through a newly painted fence Apart from that they look fantastic, varied colours always looks boss on mounts.

@Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull: Thanks man. yeah, I'll use them all, hopefully making the unit look lively rather than silly

Hmmm ... that's actually what I did. I guess I just layered the higlihgts on the fur lightly so the top highlight color (which I used as a base for the face) never came through in full strength. This is good advice though, and I used it. Not by changing the face, but by brightening the highlights on the fur in back, to match the face.

@BeatTheBeat: I may have gone a bit too far with the bright one. The dark one looks cool, but the bright one still grabs more attention. I'll try a middle ground on the fourth boar.

@Dark Apostle: Hmm, yeah. I see now that I went a bit overboard on the final highlight on the dark ears. Thanks for pointing that out, and thanks for the input!

Hahaha! Well, thanks for the comment. I'll certainly have to reconsider the bright face scheme

OK, I've started the fourth boar but here's a photo of the problem boar after a little "fix". Rather than toning down the face (I hate redoing faces after I've got the shading smooth) I brought the highlights on the brown fur up a notch to match the face. That way it's at least tied together with the scheme, even though it may be a bit over the top.

Once I've got the orcs painted and glued on top, I'll go through the whole unit and add extra highlights, fix details and even redo this face. Until then I've got to keep up the pace just getting the paint on.

Thanks for all the comments and C&C always welcome, especially when I've got the last boars finished.

I like your boars, but I have to say that the lighter face looks a bit "punch on the nose" for me, a bit too bright for my tastes.

Re: Solun Tackles Sanity - Technicolor Night Gobbos en Masse

@BeatTheBeat: Thanks man! It works better ... still, I had do shade it down a bit, and I'll probably go even further later on.

@Lorcryst: Thanks! It seems to be unanimous that that face is too bright. I'll see what I can do

So, I've done basically all the faces, even though I haven't finished the fur on the last two.

I darkened the bright face with some glazing, but started to lose a lot of it's smoothness. I tried to get it back with more glazes but then lost contrast, so I ended up with some black-lining just to emphasize the shades again, especially around the eye area.

    More (moar) soon, I hope.

A question, if I can : cavalry seems to work better in 10-men units in 8th ed, and while your unit is very dynamic right now, did you think about adding a second rank, and how it could "rank up" with those five ?

Re: Solun Tackles Sanity - Technicolor Night Gobbos en Masse

That's a very valid question Lorcryst! If I buy another pack of these boar boyz, I'd have to move one of these boars to the rear rank, the gouged eye one, but I think only that one extends too far back. Then I'd just fit the rear rank and the new front ranker to specific spots.
I might however use old-style boar boyz as a rear rank, and in that case I'd just squeeze them in there somehow. They do look a bit ridiculous next to these though. Actually they look ridiculous without comparison, anyway you look at them, but I need to use some of what I've already got, at least in the rear ranks.
Charges will be problematic too, because of the boss extending over the front of the base, but I tend to ignore gaming complications for good looking units

Re: Solun Tackles Sanity - Technicolor Night Gobbos en Masse

Wow! Bunch of comments ... great!

@Lorcryst: Yeah, I actually checked it better now, and even if I don't make the unit this dynamic and just put the boars in their most normal places, it's still dead hard to add a second rank to these new boar boyz. Model size creep is awesome, yet a bit unpractical
EDIT: Oh, I could also just have empty bases in between ranks, like I'm doing on this piece now. They're just magnetized plates to make it more impressive as a display piece on the movement tray.

@Fanny Crowbar: Thanks man! Always glad when the bright colors make someone happy ... then again, how can they not?

@Ancre: Very glad to be motivated here on the Fantasy side again. Thanks dude!

@Monsterzonk: Heh, wow! Thanks dude. Hope they'll be even awesomer with orcs on top.

@Golden Lion: Thank you man! I hope I can keep it up stick to my 2000 pts in a year plan

Well ... piggies are finished, apart from ear rings and armor plates. So what's actually part of a pig is finished (maybe some fixes once I see them with the painted orcs). Oh, and the eyes are just white, dunno what I'll do with them in the end.

I also based them, just so there are less unpainted distractions. Will add dirt patches later.

Regarding the faceplate: I'm thinking of doing it red, but think yellow teeth plates might be a bit too much. I also thought about battle damage or metal edges (as that's cool) but what might fit better with the super bright clean scheme I've got on the night goblins to just have it clean red with yellow details. Or red with black glyphs ... Dunno!??

    C&C always very much appreciated.

Really good looking piggies, top notch work, and the bases work well ...

Regarding the faceplate of the Boss's Boar, I'd suggest red with black/white "dags" to follow your bright colour scheme for the army, but that's just me ...

This log is full of excellent work, although i cant condone your choice of god the type of army colours really 'pop'. Nice terrain too!
