Re: 1500 points of Chaos - Countdown to completion

    About the Lord, nice!

It's hard to make out what you've done with the GS on the detailing, so I'll reserve judgment until it's painting time for you, but it looks rather fancy form what I can see.

The pose for the Juggernaut though , that is clearly going to be made of awesome and win when it's done. What colour scheme have you proposed for the beast? I personally reckon that something other than the classic red and bronze would go down a treat. How about a colour scheme like your Terminators, red and black with bone trim? That'll be striking as you like.

Also, got anything good planned for the base? Some sharp rocky outcrops could work, or perhaps something more daemonic?

I'll stop gibbering now and let you get on with it. Looking forward to whatever you come up with

Re: 1500 points of Chaos - Countdown to completion

Well, been travelling. I'd say sorry for the silence, but that'd mean I was expecting folks to be holding their breaths for my updates.

@Mr. Feral: Those are actually all things I'd given alot of thought so I'll give a little monologue on that (since you asked, thanks!).
The base I have planned out, the green stuff already there will be lava rock rising out of the ground around pools of molten lava, I'll model some more of those on the base. I'm not much for doing high pedestal bases but since I have the chance to use a base this size I feel I have to make something out of it.
I'm not as set on the Juggernaut paint scheme. I've seen at least one done like it had lava inside, kind of like a reverse highlight (can't find it now), black on the outside and bright in the recesses. I'm not sure I have the experience in source lighting needed to do that properly. The classic red and bronze/gold would fit in well with my army but I've had another idea cooking lately, probably influenced by your post. I might do the trims in gold or yellow/brownish metallics and the armor plates in red, maybe black and then select plates in bone, similar to the terminator shoulder pads. I might even paint the head in that off-white scheme.

@Titan Wolfe: Thanks man. Little progress right now but it'll be finished soon enough

I got my ArmyTransport today. Finally I can give the army a proper home!
5th ed, collectors edition, also arrived last week and will be delivered to my house tomorrow morning. Woo!

I'll be in Barcelona for a week, July 16th to 23rd. I'll actually be really close to the Games Workshop shop at:
    C/ Muntaner 193, 08036 Barcelona, Spain

I don't know if there's a game room there but if anybody reads this, knows and/or wants to take a quick game you can post here or send a PM.

Re: 1500 points of Chaos - Countdown to completion

    Woo finished!

Abbaddon: Here Solun Decius, have a trophy!
Typhus: Here Solun Decius, have another trophy ... of flies!
Kharn: Here Solun Decius, have a blood and skulls pizza trophy!
The (false) emperor: Hooray! Three trophies for the chea... uhm .. Lor.. uhm ... of flies!

So ... here´s the winged lord finally painted.
It´s certainly been some time coming.
I´m afraid I got sort of desperate in the last session and made some questionable color choices. The face and wings still strike me as kind of unfinished-ish but I´ll see if I can´t get used to it.

I guess this is the way it will be viewed most of the time so I tried to make the birds eye view impressive too.

I think I finally started this miniature because, since I started the new juggernaut riding lord, it didn´t call for as much perfection as before. Like the other winged character in the army, this one might eventually face being demoted to raptor champion and painting him was therefor a bit easier on the nerves.

I´ll take proper photos of the whole army, now that it is finished, when I get back home.

1500 points down, but this project log will keep rolling as I have a few things going on to add choices and eventually maybe take it to 2000 pts. I am, however going to shift my focus a bit more towards my slowly ongoing plague marine army (Project log coming up soon) and to the upcoming Tale of 40K Painter, where I´ll submit a small group of genestealers each month till the end of summer next year.

Please add your cents or pence (2 or more) as all critisism is welcome.

I really like him, I think the use of the bone colour makes him stand out from the crowd. The pose and the Khorne symbol on his head looks great too.

Re: 1500 points of Chaos - Countdown to completion

Thanks man. Yeah, the bone color on the PF and the Khorne Mark on the head are both things I had decided on aeons ago and had pretty well visualized.

I really like how all the weapons came out, Power Fist, Plasma Pistol and the sword hilts (although I now see I slipped a bit with a black brush there). All the details, chest mark and metallics I´m happy with as well, and the red blending on the right shoulder pad.

However, I think the color of the wings might be a bit dark and lifeless. I also sort of need feedback on the color of the head and the style of the right leg (bone-ish color on cracked leg). How is it observed by someone who sees it for the first time?

The leg is fine as it is, it brings out the detail of the cracks but the head could do with a few lighter highlights to emphasize the facial features. I find a red glaze under the eyes also works well for faces, shows off the eyes better.

As for the wings, same thing as I suggested for the face (lighter highlights), but some veins here and there might work too.

Allright. I was too lazy too take proper photos of each unit right now but I snapped some of the army to view it as a whole.
These actually aren't that many models for a 1500 pts army but it's my first one and I'm proud of it!

Following are a bunch of photos of my key attack squads.
Regular CMS and Havocs squads are in the background.

I finally did the freehand on the banner so everything is finished, fair and square!

@Mr Feral: Thanks. I might try the red glaze, that's a trick I hadn't heard of. The lighter highlights are exactly what I was thinking too for the face and wings but I'm going to keep them this way for the time being. I was going to go for darker wings than the other ones and a daemonic color for the face. Maybe I got what I was aiming for and just have to get used to it

Re: 1500 points of Chaos - Countdown to completion

Thanks everyone for checking it all out.
@Titan: I hope it will be. Might check out another monthly tourney tomorrow. I played the first 1500 point game with a regular gaming buddy who had gotten his Tau up to 1500 as well. It was also our first 5th ed game. It ended en a draw after both of us had lost all scoring units (we could have gone for wipeout in the last 2 turns but called it a night instead).
    @Anardakil: I appreciate that, thanks!
@RiiTz: Yeah. It's the most rewarding thing, to stick something all the way through. I always like purposeful project logs myself and hope I managed to make mine that way.

This PL isn't quite over though. The edited first post has a list of some of the stuff I have yet to do here.
Now I'm going to prepare for another project log though, and don't forget to check out the tale of 40K painters that's starting around the end of the month in the general project logs board.

    C&C still very welcome.

Re: 1500 points of Chaos - Countdown to completion

Played a three game tourney yesterday. This time enough players showed to play the full tourney. I really enjoyed playing the objective missions in the new edition. Worrying only about objectives and not about surviving makes for fun tactical gameplay.
My first two games were very exiting to the last turn and I enjoyed them, although I did end up losing both.
The last game I lost as well but didn't enjoy as much. I deployed a bit to far away from a very shooty eldar force and never really got into the game.
I do like the new true line of sight rules but I believe terrain has to be designed a bit for them. My game club's terrain is designed as area terrain that used to be LoS blocking but has so many holes in it that it isn't any more. For power armor, cover has very little effect but for the eldar it can really help. So I spent my last game walking out in the open (practically) while being shot down with no place to hide. I didn't manage to properly finish off enough units this way, having a CC-oriented army, and so lost this kill point mission.

I think I might have to put my current game standing (5th ed - 1500 pts games) in my sig like some (rather more successful) players do:

    W:0 T:1 L:3

I did take away the prize for best painted army though.
Also the players I played in the first two, more exiting, games ended up in first and second place in the tourney so all in all I'm very happy with the games and with my army.

To add something worth seeing, here's a photo of my objective markers. Since 5th ed now has D3+2 objectives I'll probably have to add one. Any ideas?

Left to right: Chaos Trophies, Life Support, Weapon Supply and "Chosen Armor".

I hurried with them and just went for "terrain quality".
Also, the photo's are bit weird.

    C&C always appreciated.

Tale of a 40K Painter: Genestealer Infestation

    Allright.

This is my own personal Project Log where I'll be posting my progress in the Tale of 40K Painters.

I originally made this as a WIP thread for Tyranid painters in the Tale of 40K Painters but the proper one is now here: http://warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156002

For this year's Tale I'll be painting up a Genestealer Infestation.

Here's a photo of my material: 25 old style Space Hulk genestealers, 40 new genestealers, most of which are on sprues, and a Broodlord.

I'll be doing the old-style stealers in a paint scheme much like the old Space Hulk Genestealer scheme.
35 of the new ones should end up with extended carapace in a paint scheme that draws inspirations from this:

    The blue poison dart frog.
    We'll see how that goes!

5 of the old stealers have missing hands or broken parts and will be converted, along with 5 of the new ones, into the Brood lord's retinue, with ext, carap., Scything Talons, Toxin sacs. ... the works. Same biomorphs on the Broodlord himself and maybe a variation on the paint scheme for that whole group. They'll be like a whole bunch of brood lord material, but only one of them the real thing, the rest ever so slightly ... uhm ... off!

I'm hoping for some criticism here and pointers on what I can do better. Good natured shout-outs are also welcome and appreciated.

    Welcome to my log...

Re: Tale of 40K Painters: Tyranids

I'll start this log with my two fresh test miniatures.
I'm doing a pure genestealer army with 3 main types of stealers and variation in paint scheme for them.

These test minis are the two schemes that will be most used:
Left: Old style Space Hulk stealer in more or less old style space hulk scheme.
Right: New style stealer with extended carapace painted in my "blue poison dart frog" scheme.

    Scrutiny most welcome, really!

    Hahaha!
This is just as confusing as one could imagine after two people posting WIP threads for the same thing.

Your tyranids are seriously cool ReaperOfSouls but if you could edit button to copy your post from this thread to this one here (Tyranid WIP) this should be the last of this whole misunderstanding.

Thanks for posting, good painting but sorry for the inconvenience.

It looks like the poison frog scheme is a lot of work, but it looks wonderful. Stealers are over 20 points a model, I think it's worth going for it. It really adds a lot of texture to the flat carapace plates.
