    Silly mp3 Question.

    Ok, computer n00b time.

I have a new phone which doubles up as an mp3 player (Samsung D600, in case you were wondering), but it only accepts files in the form of mp3's.

So where do i get them from? I can't use any p2p file sharing programmes as my uni network firewall won't allow them, and i don't want to pay to download songs through iTunes as i have hundreds of CD's at home. So now where?

I normally use Windows Media Player 9 to copy CD's to my music library on my comp, but this stores them as .wma files. Is there a free programme i could use or something to convert them to mp3s? Or is there a way to get the tracks off my CD's as mp3s?

    Thanks in advance!

Download.com has a whole host of stuff like that, plenty of it free:

Can't remember what the name of the one I use is off the top of my head. But I'm in the same boat as you - my phone only plays mp3s. And all my digital music is in .ogg. 's the wave of the future...

Windows media player can rip to mp3 too, just look in the settings for ripping music and change it from 'wma' to 'mp3'.

I think the question is converting a .wma or in my case, an AAC digital file format into Mp3. Its easy enough when your importing CDs, but is there a way of converting an encoded file to mp3?

Unfortunatly not. Mine only has the options wma, and wma (variable bait rate).

Looking into it you can get a plug in, but it requires windows XP, and i'm only running 2000.

@Rabid Bunny, thanks for the offer! If i don't find one by the end of the day, i'll drop you a PM.

    Re: Silly mp3 Question.

I'm not right now, but i am in general - my username is jedi152.

I've found one - Google was my friend. A google search for 'free mp3 ripper' turned up a nifty freeware program called CD-DA X-Tractor, which works a treat.

But @Rabid: add me anyway and we'll chat sometime!

    Thanks for the help guys!

iTunes will import from CD straight to mp3, it will also convert wma to mp3 (on Windows)

    Re: Silly mp3 Question.

I am using 'Easy CD-DA Extractor' an easy to use programme which can rip in every possible format. And I still have to find one copy protection that will stop this programme.

After reading the full thread I found out that you've found the programme by yourself. Oh well, can't advertise this programme enough.
Be yourself, there are so many others.

I use iTunes for ripping, however, I cannot get it to stop putting the track numbers in front of the song title.
