Thread: Precinct Omega's Random Thread of Randomness

Re: Precinct Omega's Random Thread of Randomness

I took advantage of the recent Black Scorpion metals sale to pick up a batch of random pirate and Old West miniatures from their current and out-going ranges and managed to get one of them painted up last night:

As I want this model to be suitable for a range of different skirmish and battle games, I painted her on a very generic wasteland base. I'll probably add some static grass to give it some interest.

    Ah, the governor's daughter.
Her beauty is famous all throughout the Spanish Main for a reason.
    Nicely done, especially her hair.

I've discovered that a 70/30 mix of Tausept Ochre and Dheneb Stone is a great base for blonde hair.

So, first, from Freelancer James D:

    Then, from Freelancer Sean:

    And from Freelancer Simon:

That's not all, but it'll do to be going on with, eh?

All of these were painted to Level 1 - that is, basic "get you on the table" quality - except Marneus and crew, who are Level 2, guided by sample minis from the client

A bit more sculpting has occurred, for a private client who wanted a custom-sculpted Death Guard head with a very particular design:

This was it after the first full pass:

And this is it after this morning's pass:

Re: Precinct Omega's Random Thread of Randomness

An interesting one, this. *A client sent us a selection of different projects, each one comparatively discreet. *This is the most conventional of them: a quintet of Black Templars heroes from the Third War of Armageddon.

Four of these have been sent off to Freelancer Rob, whilst I've started work on the fifth:

This guy is a Scibor model, with a Forgeworld left hand and shield and a gun-halberd from Chapterhouse Studios. *The casting quality is very good (not perfect but superior in many ways to what I've seen of similar models from Forge World), but the design leaves a great deal to be desired. *Painting the delicate filigree (the product of a laser-etched press mould, so very fine and intricate) isn't impossible, but it is very hard to do and also to achieve a good finished effect. *I mostly have to paint not only the lines, but also the armour around the lines and then go back and re-paint the armour, leaving on the lines painted.

It's very time consuming to achieve an only moderately acceptable outcome. *I'd've preferred flat, featureless armour onto which I could have painted interesting freehand or a delicate shading effect.

REally nice work free lancer bob. Always a pleasure dipping in and out of this thread to see the trends in what people are buying for commission. Fascinating approach and final product.

Re: Precinct Omega's Random Thread of Randomness

A couple of models I've added to my private collection:

I love Wild West skirmish games. I own Legends of the Old West (Warhammer Historical) and Blackwater Gulch (from Gangfight Games) but I've not had a chance to play LotOW for ages and still haven't given BWG a run-out. I always used other people's miniatures but when Black Scorpion had a sale to clear stock of discontinued models, I picked up these two to become the leaders of what I hope will become two eclectic gangs of Wild West fighters.

I'm planning on developing a little Wild West game - a bit "Deadlands", but with Elvish rangers, Dwarf prospectors and Orc cowboys and suchlike - so these may also serve to work as playtest minis for that.

I bought this mini on a whim from Hasslefree when I ordered by armature for the sculpting competition. I've always liked it, and painted a couple of versions of the same mini without the coat. But when I agreed to join in the playtesting of Chris Averiss's "Heaven's Fall" skirmish game, I thought she'd make a great Exorcist in a Lost Havens force. So I gave a bit of a paramilitary look.

Re: Precinct Omega's Random Thread of Randomness

I've recently been looking into smaller scale miniature ranges at the 6-10mm level, inspired by the likes of Exodus Wars and Dropzone Commander. But I've been disappointed by the level of quality one can find in sculpting at that scale. At 15mm, most sculpting is pretty rough, but I've seen some amazing work done at 20mm and 15mm and I can't help feeling that more can be done to create good-looking, well-proportioned miniatures at 6mm to 10mm that offer the potential to genuine reward the effort of the painter.

Having failed to find anything that met my need for a "realistic" style of 6-10mm light infantry near-future style miniature, I decided to have a go at sculpting my own between current projects. This is my first effort:

I hope you can see what it is. I'm the first to admit that it's a far from perfect job, but as my first attempt, I'm pretty happy. He stands almost exactly 10mm tall, and as I've not yet given him feet, he'll be 11mm tall when finished. He has a fully-enclosed helmet, ballistic armour on his shoulders and torso (which extends upwards around his neck), light fatigues and a generic, slug-thrower-type assault rifle. I like the design, but I'm not happy with the sharpness of the sculpting. I'd like to get a much sharper, less organic finish to his helmet, armour and rifle, and need to get a better look to his legs. I think, next time, I'll sculpt his head and torso without arms and down as far as the webbing belt and crotch-plate. Then I can get that cast up a few dozen times and add a variety of leg and arm designs to the resin core.

This is a little something I couldn't resist picking up from Antenociti's Workshop. Jed's work is a bit of a mixed bag of interesting SF stuff and I love most of his vehicles, although the figures themselves are a bit more of a pick and mix for taste. Still, the two girls on hoverbikes are awesome. This is the first of two. I've got the second one, but seem to have misplaced the actual bike...

WIP, obviously. I'm giving this one a fair amount of careful time and attention. Not sure what I'll do with her when I'm done. Maybe she'll just sit on my shelf and look pretty, or I could use her as some sort of objective in an Infinity game.

Back to the hoverbike later. First, a little something I got from Otherworld Miniatures:

Not released until next year, this human adventurer is one of a range of classic fantasy adventurer sets that were successfully funded by Otherworld's recent Kickstarter campaign. I'm really impressed with the character and quality of the sculpting and casting, although, because it's Otherworld, I'm not surprised.

Big thumbs up from Precinct Omega! I look forward to showing you the finished model soon.

EDIT - Just before I call it for the day, here's a final shot of him:

Yay! Just a couple of hours' work, this. Really a quick job but I'm very pleased with how he turned out:

Also, I'm using a new camera and a new lighting set-up to allow me to more easily take WIP shots and finished photos at any time of day. What do you think?
