    Praetors of Calth Pre-Heresy Ultramarines

A time of hidden conflict and secret warfare; when battle-lines were drawn and re-drawn between brother and brother. This is a record of those times, set forth by autolocutor Apologist.

The ancient and crumbling Apocrypha of Davio, a relic of the Second Founding, lists eight successor Chapters to the Thirteenth Legion.

The later Apocrypha of Skaros states there were twenty-three successors to the Ultramarines, but does not list them all...

Herein lies the tale of the brethren of the Praetors of Calth.

    Painted pics!

First off, this is my new log for a big ol' project that I'll be working on for the next few months – some pre-heresy Ultramarines.

My goals for this project are:
    1) Improve my freehand and greenstuff skills
    2) Develop an attractive army with a backstory that links in with existing canon to satisfy my inner fluffhound.
    3) Stick to existing canon where possible, and make up fitting stuff where I want to do something fun and new.

For this reason (and also because I'm sick to the back teeth of painting red), I thought I'd go for a pre-heresy Ultramarines army. Here's the proof-of-concept – a digitally recoloured version of one of my Ad Mech techspirants:

The backstory will be developed (and justified) as I go, but the bare bones are that this army represents the fifth company of the fifteenth chapter of the Legion, who bear the honorific the Praetors of Calth, led by Chapter Master Orpheus.

After the heresy, the veterans of this force will form the basis of the successor chapter the Praetors of Orpheus – but at the moment, they are simply some of the first of the new Ultramarines drawn from Macragge at the start of the Great Crusade.

I'm sticking to Codex markings as far as I can see, which means that they'll be blue with gold trim (all the Ultramarines in the Visions series of artbooks have gold trim rather than company trim), and will use archaic versions of the Insignium Astartes (since the Codex Astartes hasn't been codified yet).

Here're the right shoulder designs so far:

The left shoulder of each Space Marine will bear personal heraldry based around the Legion symbol, as I want to reinforce the idea that each Space Marine is a hero in and of himself.

Well, there's the ambition – let's see if I can do it justice!

Re: Praetors of Calth Pre-Heresy Ultramarines

I will definitely be following this project closely.
I know the marine is a re-colored version from your AdMech army, but he has a look that seems very appropriate to the project: knightly, and archaic -- almost steam punk, but stripped down.
    Can't wait to see more.

If this is going to be the same standard as your mechanicus these will be amazing. Good luck and have fun.

Re: Praetors of Calth Pre-Heresy Ultramarines

The lectutrix cleared her throat impatiently, and the incustudents settled down in their pews, setting their slates and chalks down in front of them. They were keen to learn of the Astartes, the Emperor's Angels of Death...
The lectutrix began to speak, in a low and cracking voice.

'Fragmentary registrys in the crumbling crys-stacks of Hyponia make note of the arrival of the the Ultramarine's 15th Chapter, the Praetors of Calth, early on in the Great Crusade.

'The records speak of Chapter Master Paesentius Eupid Orpehus, or
Orpheus Orkbane as he became known, and the death of Odsnik the Slaver at Orpheus' hands. They speak at length about the subsequent routing of Waaagh Odsnik from the system, prosecuted with speed and efficiency at the hands of the Ultramarines.

'Drawn almost entirely from Gulliman's newly built training camps on Macragge, the 15th Chapter of the Legion suffered few casualties, and so the roll of Honour, now recorded only in a Hyponian hololith, provides an important record for archeostudy and reverence. This hololith provides one of the only known Imperial records of the names and histories of each of the Heroes of Hyponia, as the Praetors were hailed.'

Okay, so fluff aside, I've started to put together the force. The plan at the moment is to make a command squad, and three squads that mimic the RTB01 box in armament, so each squad will have a missile launcher and a flamer. Eventually, I hope to give each of these squads a Rhino converted to look a little more Old School; and then get stuck into more unusual stuff, like scouts with puffed sleeves and mohawks.

Here's a pic of the first three squads, along with three spare sets of legs that'll probably form the basis for Orpheus Orkbane and Captain Iophon.

Here's a detail of a Mark III helmet conversion simply a Chaos champion helm with the horns trimmed off and tidied up.

...and the first pre-greenstuff model, which I couldn't resist putting together.

I'm sticking with regular-sized weaponry, as this should help emphasise the size of the bodies in fact, the above model has a (smaller) scout bolt pistol, which further emphasises this. Since he's wearing prototype Mark IV, this marine is obviously wearing test-bed equipment; perhaps due to irrepairable damage to his Crusade Armour, or maybe simply because he's a squad leader or somesuch.

Re: Praetors of Calth Pre-Heresy Ultramarines

Thematically, I'm going for a general 'Ancients' feel with a 40k twist, rather than all-out 'Romans in space'. I mention in my first post that the left shoulder of each Space Marine will bear personal heraldry this'll give me a great opportunity to reinforce the theme, and encourage me to paint each as a unique character. The heraldry itself will be a mix of mediaeval pageantry and ancient Greek and Roman icons and symbology, plus a few bits I'm chucking in because I think they'll look cool.

I haven't been lazy on the designing front! I figured a few sketches to work from would work much better than painting blind, so I'd appreciate any comments and critique you can give any you particularly like or dislike?

    Squad Mox

    Squad Epipatros

    Squad Santiagon

You can safely ignore the names I've noted on the sketches for the moment I was playing around with some, but decided that they may well change. Lucky that the Hypian Hololith is made-up, huh?

Here's a roll-call for the army at the moment, cribbed from one of the other incustudents (cheers Serimus!) after dark:

    Ultramarines 13th Legion, 15th Chapter

    Chapter Master Orpheus Orkbane;
    accompanied by his honour guard:
Tiberion, Hero of the Four Rings,
    Alcibidas
    Volcatius
    Isaphron of the Marches

    Captain Iophon;
    accompanied by his command squad:
    Gnaeus Icaron
    Epipatros the Just
    Attius Felix
    Rufrus

    Squad Mox:
    Sergeant Mox
    Kaeso Half-hundred
    Fulgor Abraxas
    Terentius Coldbrow
    Mercution
    Teletas
    Hetus
    Caius of the Furlong
    Martianus
    Caldo

    Squad Epipatros:
    Sergeant Epipatros
    Noctem
    Atlion Straightback
    Gabulus
    Neosebius
    Eumon
    Cerberon
    Neophrast
    Telyon the Determined
    Iophilus

    Squad Santiagon
    Sergeant Santiagon
    Eudox
    Isathon

Well im subscribed, mainly because of
    A: They are true scale.
B: You have put a lot of time into working on personal heraldry for each of your marines along with naming them.

This will be a good one to watch

Loved the AdMech and already loving this! The shoulderpads are definately preheresy...they remind me of the cover art for Horus Rising.

I agree with previous posters about the heraldry. It will make the army look truly stunning if you manage to pull it off well. I'm a bit worried about how your sanity will fare when you start painting it though
