    Ratling snipers... ew.

Recently I picked up imperial guard, and I was going to buy some ratlings for my sniper squad and then.. I looked at the models. http://store.us.games-workshop.com/s...680&GameNav=10

All I have to say is.. ew. Those look worse than most of the bad Dark Eldar models, and I'm quite surprised they weren't remade when the rest of the guard was remodelled. Seriously.. does anyone know if Forgeworld sells better looking ones or ANYTHING? Will I end up having to heavily convert models to make up my ratling sniper squad?

    No FW models sadly.

I can understand why they didn't get redone, since they'd only ever sell 10 models to a guard player (0-1 entry alowance). It just wasn't worth the cash to make new ones.

What happened to the coolish looking ones in the IG codex? or were those the same ones done to a better paint quality? either way, they'd make for better display models, or models in general.

The picture in question im talking about is the one with the Ogryns, Kasrkin and the Ratlings on the wall, with the Ogryns dishing it out in CC with some random enemy (left my codex at uni, so wont be able to check till tommorow night)

They arent really all that bad as far as models go. They look a bit silly due to their age, but with a good paint job they can look pretty cool.

    Nothing wrong with 'em!

The relatively large rifles they carry with their small size match their fluff of being dedicated snipers fairly well --> they can also be cammed up pretty easily and with their smalle size are easy to put into scenic bases.

I was utterly dismayed when the IG codex was released and I found that they were dumped upon my beloved steel legion, I'll suppose it's because somebody was hoping the nasty Armageddon air would make short work of the little runts.

I know they couldn't really drop them from the codex, but i'm not the only one who thinks lone -human- snipers would be a preferable choice.

As it stands I have a squad of these, they are so old I think they have lead in them, haven't used them for an extremely long time (since lascannon weapon teams could have the Slick Crew veteran ability).

Same ones, just painted like the 8th Cadian regiment. Judging by the paint scheme, I'd say those fellows (the specific ratlings shown in the online store, that is), likely come from sometime in 2nd Edition.

But, Throne of Earth! Five in a blister!

Those who point out that it's still $3.00 USD for a ratling will be violently ignored.

See now THAT would be awesome.. but it doesn't seem much in the 40k style, probably cuz it would seem cheap. An entire squad having to shoot at a single guy would be a waste it seems, although I am totally in favor of that.

They dont seem to look too bad when painted decently, I think they should change that display pic on the online store.

Look at these for example, not half bad eh?

With so many unit types ignoring pinning for one reason or another at the store I play at, I don't really field ratlings. I also don't really like the idea of having the little buggers in my army to begin with. As far as I'm concerned, they're mutants and should be dealt with by the Ordo Hereticus...
Maybe one day I'll do some human modifications to replace those little runts. I tend to use plenty of lascannons for my giant slaying needs. Ordinance for the bags of meat.

I added some thicker brass wire to the ends of the barrels as silencers and cut their feet down, puttying them to look like boots. Look a lot better in my opinion, particularly the silencers. You can always paint them in camoflage paint too.

My 5 man squad of Ratlings were the first of my Guard I painted back in 1997.
I recently painted up some new ones for the Dutch GT, because those old ones were not upto my standard of painting now.

I was suprised by the detail of the models themself. It is just the way you paint them, but I believe those were the best of the 40K 2nd edition IG models made!
