    Gibbtall's Salamanders WIP

So after a long history of grudging mumbles against Space Marines and the rest of the Imperium, I've finaly caved in and begun an attempt at a Salamanders army. I've allways said that if I ever did Space Marines it would be Sallys, do to lots of fire, lots of green, and lots of artistic freedom.

So I'm trying to paint them really well too, which is takeing a LONG time :P but is also coming out really well.

My current list of SM Models is:

Master of the Fleet (not sure what I'll use him for, but I got the box of the 4 masters so I'll find a use)
Games Day Mini (again not sure what he'll be)
Standerd Bearer (need to do the banner and another shoulder pad
    Apothocary (needs painting)
    Librarian (almost done)
Techmarine (I'de like to strip his paint, it's a little bit thick, or get a different model)
5 Terminators, one finished with heavy flamer (eventualy one with chaingun and another with missles, will be ranged squad)
20 Tactical Space Marines (need squad/chapter, equipped with 3 flamers, 1 meltagun)
2 Legion of the Damned heavy weapons (one with multimelta, one with heavy flamer, need to paint their capes)
17 Tactical Space Marines (currently painting)
3 Tactical Space Marines with Heavy Weapons (one is a metal dev plasma cannon, 2 are regular guys with rockets)
3 Tactial Space Marine Veterans (primed)
1 Rhino MK II (All done, with extra armour)
1 Rhino MK II (about half done the painting)
    Ironclad Dreadnaught (Needs painting)

I will try to keep everything updated with some WIPs along the way.

    Current progress.

All comments and criticism are welcome!

The fire looks good to me.

The Scales are to round, in my opinion Lizard Scales look better with sharp edges, like the Saurus Warriors:

Ah very true, when I read a how-to somone said to do that, but it seems odd, but I agree with you now :P

Finaly got it to post, sheesh. And yes Andradon, I agree, I read in a How-To that they should be more polygonish, but that seemed odd to me. Guess I was wrong :P

Just moveing some stuff down to keep my first post clean.

This first one is a test piece for doing fire, Is there a colour between Blood Red and Golden Yellow that I should use to tone down the contrast?

This second one is a test piece for sculpting green stuff scales. Unfortunately the sculpting tool I used was too pointy but I have an idea for what I'll use next time.

I'm currently just finishing up the last touches on my first Terminator and hope to have pictures up by monday.

You can always try painting the scales rather than sculpting. It gives the look of the scale texture without the feel, though it certainly doesn't make painting Sals any faster. I painted the scales on this Chaplain to show he was veteran of the Badab War:

    Re: Gibbtall's Salamanders WIP

Very nice KtL, but I love the actual texture of the scales, if I just painted them flat then I'de lose that.

So here is my first Termie, sorry if the pictures are slighty dark or blurry, I took them at 2 in the morning with a slightly yellowish light and a few pieces of paper :P

I was so afraid to paint the flamer, not sure of how to do the scorching, but a simple drybrush of Scroched Earth and Skull Black looks awsome.

The parchment on his fist sais Cleanse, I in fact spelled it Clense the first time I did it, so I had to go over it again :P

His bum, for those of you who are so inclined.

Looks really good, I only have one critique: the flames. I find them too uniform/small to be as awesome looking as they could be. but otherwise great work.

Seems to me you have a problem with your pages refreshing, as you may have noticed you did in fact double post your terminator

Even so, I do like what you've done with it. I'm a big softy for Salamanders, I reckon they're second only to the Flesh Tearers for best colours. Your terminator makes me feel like painting a few sallies up myself. You should get some of the FW shoulders, they're smokin hot!

Lepp: Ya, I kinda noticed when i did this one that the flames were kinda small vurses my test piece. I'de LIKE to get more blending going on in them but I'm afriad of ruining it, and Warhammer paint isn't the best for blending since it drys so fast.

codename_greendawn: Oh look, I did, that's odd :P Ya, I'de love to get those pads, and luckily I happen to live in the same town as the Canadian Head Office.

    Re: Gibbtall's Salamanders WIP

So over the years I've somehow recieved a few random models from friends and rivals. Turns out I have about 9 marines, an apothocary, and a Dark Angels standerd bearer (along with some other random parts, luckaly a few meltas and flamers).

So here are those marines, all have to be primed, and repaired. I decided to tear off their arms in order to better paint their chest and guns, hopefully this dosn't ruin the joints too much. Some still need some arms, which I'll have to scrounge for. The one chopped in half with green stuff on his leg was part of 2 models (which I actualy think I might be able to squeeze another model out of) the on painted models were from a small diorama I made at Games Day Canada 07, I made sure to stuck stuff into it that were cool looking, and I even pocketed a couple dureing the building Problem was, I tried to model one of them on his knee, and ikn the small amount of time I simply chopped him at the knee and glued it back. This obviously leaves me with some greenstuffing to do, unfortuneatly it wasn't workign all that well, so I'm going to try and cover some of it up with some lizard skin at some point.

After scroungeing through my bag of bits for anythign usefull, I realised I had this guy. Technicaly he is a Dark Angels Standerd Bearer I believe, but he's an awsome model so I don't see why slamanders can't wear robes too. So far what I've done with him is shave off the DA symbol around his neck and to use the chain that is still there (and to take up some space on his chest) I'm replaceing it with a small icon from my terminators sprue. For his missing arm I'm planning on useing the sword arm, for a relaxed apearance, with the axe hand and shaft. For the actual weapon I am hoing to try and model a hammer out of greenstuff and other materials, the power axe is a good spot to start in order to keep the nice power weapon looking shaft. His shoulder pad I'm going to try and give a nice green stuff salamander symbol.

Painting this guy will be a long way off, but hopefully I'll have some pics of his hammer within a week or 2.

    Re: Gibbtall's Salamanders WIP

So here is the first steps to converting the axe/sword into a hammer :P

I've got to add another piece to the back of the hammer but I'll wait till the front gets harder so I don't ruin it. I'll be sculpting it more too, so don't fret.

Nice highlighting on the green. Would it be easier to just buy thunderhammer bits from ebay? Look forward to seeing more now that the salamanders are getting a phat boost in 5th edition.

Certainly it would be EASIER but not as much fun :P

And ya, I already have the new rulebook but havn't noticed much that helps Sallys out, I'm assumeing it's all in the Codex. Frankly I'm hopeing for an entire Sally Codex :P

    Finished Thunder Hammer.

So I went to GW and got a box of marines, Sally terminator pads, which they aparently had in stock, and the box of "masters" since I planned on getting them to order the Master of the Fleet.

I'm currently watching an auction on ebay for the Games Day model, hopefully I'll get it for a decent price.

    Re: Gibbtall's Salamanders WIP

So a bit of an update. Unfortuneatly (kinda) I went away for a week on vaca, and am currently in the proccess of moveing. But once I've moved I don't think I'll have internet or tv for a bit, so I'll prolly paint alot :P

So cause I'm an idiot, I keep buying more models while the others sit there waiting to be painted. I've almost finished 5 of the tactical marines and the stanerd bearer has had a bit of lovin. I bought a box of Dark Angels marines, and intend to mix around some of the robes into my army since they look so cool (who sais only DA get robes?).

I also got the Games Day model for $15 from a guy at a close by hobby store. And that box of "masters" which I am at least useing the Master of the Fleet.

I got some bits from a guy in Australia off ebay, a nice big banner, some heads, and combi weapons to name a few.

Hopefully somone will have a digital camera in my new house so I will be able to take some pictures.
