Platty and his Flames Of War

    Righty-Ho,

So, been back in the hobby for just over a year, which has been almost exclusively 40k. However, I have been experienceing recent motivation problems with gaming and painting, which has led to me getting hardly anything done. So, in order to try to get my creative juices flowing again (so to speak) I am expanding into Flames of War. I've not had a go at the game yet but the rules look straight forward and it allows me to branch out and dabble in some historical stuff for a change. Hopefully a widening of my collection will reignite my passion for the hobby in general and allow me to get lots more done. After all, if I up my amount of painting, it's the perfect excuse to branch out even further!

I have decided to go for a late war German army, which intially at least will be primarily a mechanised force. The reason I have gone for the Germans is mainly the tanks and the small elite nature of the army. Having played Guard in 40k, I couldn't stomach Russians, I'm not bothered about the Americans and a British army is a project for a very far future date.

The force itself is not going to be based on any historical order of battle, simply what I like and what I think will look cool.

Picutre time! Nothing is painted yet, but here are the first purchases ready to be assembled:

    And the first Panzer IVH:

I found the Panzer IVH a right pain to put together - the side panels are attached with these fiddly little attachments that break every time I pick it up. I am seriously tempted just to glue the side panels onto the tank without them, as I don't think it will make any difference at this scale. Has anyone else had this problem?

That's all for now. This may not be the fastest log in exsistence but please bear with me. Hopefully it will be updated fairly regularly. Please feel free to check out my 40k log for examples of my style. Also, all tips on painting Flames of War are welcome as never done it before.

    Cheers
    Platty

There will be very little red or bone in this army - though lots of grey.

Managed to get all the models I have assembled and under coated last night, which means I got my chance today to have a crack my first Flames of War miniatures. I was going for table top quality only and working on the three bases of infantry that come with the Panzergrenadier HQ I managed this:

It's not my best work but I am happy with it and the whole lot only took 2 hours, even with my slow painting. I have kept the highlights to a minimum to speed things up as I don't want to spend ages on them.

Please let me know what you all think, and any painting tips from FoW veterans are very welcome.

Re: Platty and his Flames Of War

Update time! Today, I worked on the three half tracks to go with the HQ. Can you guess which one I did first?

If you said the one of the left you were correct. After that attempt I reworked the camo a little bit and was much more pleased with the results. I think an airbush is the way forward, though it will have to wait for some time.

And the whole unit together (and incidentally, the whole army so far!)

So what do I think of my first none 40k models in some time? I have enjoyed the experience, and they are quick and easy to paint which is a bonus. It has also re-ignited my passion for the general hobby and cleared the painters block I have had for about 8 weeks. It's good news all round really!

    Comments and thoughts welcome.

Nice to see some FOW stuff on here, I have toyed with the idea of getting into this myself, I know several people who say it is fantastic. Looking really good so far, keep us updated.

    Yes! Flames of War, hurray!

Good work on them, I can't really see that clear but maybe you could go over the faces with an ink wash and highlight to really make them POP (if that is your thing)

Also I really like your infantry bases, can you tell me how you did them?

Been thinking about the faces, I did use two different tones, but I think at 15mm scale the difference needs to be more extreme so I may add washes. As for the bases, I glued the indicidual guys on and then GS'd around each man, adding lumps and bumps. When dry I just glued some sand on which was then painted GW's bestial brown with a bleached bone dry brush followed by some static grass. Good results and very straight forward.

Thanks a lot! The FoW sets themselves are all Vallejo (first time I have used them and quite impressed) and I have also used my GW paints as well.
