    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

    Lion El Jason-

I have dreadnoughts...three of them. They make great
long ranged tank busters! My army is mostly shooty.
I have 7 shooty squads and 3 CC squads. I never liked
the Crusaders though, so I own a few standard LRs.

I was wanting to do a little reconfiguring of my squads in
hopes of getting the best out of them. Since I only use
the CC squads 30% of the time I wanted to make sure
with the new rule book edition(5) I wasn't the only one
still using heavy weapons in these squads.

    Thanks,
    Ghostfire

Hey. Is this a good list:

    Belial

    Deathwing squad
    Assault cannon

    Deathwing squad
    Assault cannon

    Deathwing squad
    Assault cannon

    Deathwing squad
    Assault cannon

    Vindicator
    Dozer Blade

    Vindicator
    Dozer Blade

    Vindicator
    Dozer Blade

It comes to exactly 1500 points. Thoughts? All help and advice will be much appreciated =)

    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

Yes its a great list!!!! Vindi love all around!!!

Honestly, I would make room for a Heavy Weapons Dread or two to pop tanks and other dreads.

My 2k list looks something like this:

    Belial
5x Termie Squad with Assault Cannons
    2 TLLC/ML Dreads
    3 Vindis

I forgot the actual points so there may be an apoth. in there some where.

    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

Yeah, it's a nice solid list!

I like triple vindi, but it's not a 'real' deathwing list, so don't go bringing too much of that into here or you may end up having to play against one of us and get yourself beaten back into the 'true' path!

    I assume they're shooting terminators?

It's probably a touch stronger than my 1500 which runs

    Belial
    3 dreads, 2x las/ml 1x AC/HF
    2 squads
    2 Land Raiders

But don't think your list being stronger than mine means I wouldn't teach you what it's like to be a REAL deathwing player!!! :-P

I must admit that my Deffwing wing is eying the Gobmashas and Spleenrippas in my Kult of Speed and thinking they would make wonderful Vindicators. May have to give it a whirl some day soon.

Thanks for the feedback. This is going to be my first ever 40k army and it seems simple enough.

Yes indeed...my Son's World Eaters have 3 Vindi's which I might 'borrow' some time, so long as it's not against him He won't mind.

But yes, we are straying from the straight and true aren't we.

    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

OK talking of the dark side...my 3rd Raider is a standard one, and my initial intention is to let it fire at range and then in a later turn in the game stick one of the shooty squads in it and trundle up the board and capture an(other) objective....this sounds reasonable to me and I've done similar with my GK lists. Now, seen as the core of my lists is 2 c/c squads in 2 LRC's with shooty elements added would it make more sense to make a 3rd c/c squad to put in the LR, thereby having 3 sets of units in the enemy's face?

To me it seems that both tactics are viable and it will come down to preference once again, but I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

Well I would have left on squad shooty, and used it for late turns objective grabbing, that is how i play my deathwing, but i guess some of the pure assault players here will disagree.

    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

I've played land raider rush with 3 shooty squads before I don't see too much problem, all terminators are able to assault even if its just 2 power fist attacks. This was back in the day of course so you could get out the land raider, shoot one squad then assault someone else.

Mechanised Deathwing has had a significant boost in 5th but the one thing it lacks is numbers of scoring units. Its a much, much better army for capture and control and Annihilation but we struggle at sieze ground due to lack of scoring units... basically we often don't have as many units as there are objectives.

A simple way to help this particular situation is to drop a land raider to add a shooty squad. One can DWA if needed, the other can fire support from the start, even 4 squads instead of 3 will help but for myself, I prefer to have the third land raider and the assaultt unit and suffer in the one in three sieze ground games.

I'll deffinatly be getting some of those, at least 1 box. I need the rule book if nothing else but I will use the terminators and dreadnought.
When painted the terminators will look quite similar and I'll cope with the slightly dull-detailed dreadnought.

It's a shame the termies don't come with an assault cannon =\

A little... I'm just happy with the sgt and power sword. I have enough heavy weapons to cover them.

I definitely agree. I have struggled with both sieze ground games I've played. What I have noticed is that one location on the board is often more objective dense than the others. In the last game I tried to emphasise this by packing the markers as close as possible.

I've also changed my list ever so slightly to accomodate this (and cos I like more heavy weapons). I now run the 3 Raiders and 3 Squads as usual, what has changed is I've noticed a better performance from shooty Dreadnoughts (Las/ML is my preference).

So I use the three raiders and squads to take the denser part of the board and the dreads sit back and contest objectives in the less heavily populated section.

Cheese-ey Nasty Trick of Unsporting Behaviourtm - If you sit a Land Raider with a squad in it on an objective, that squad is scoring and no other unit can get within 3" of the objective. If the Raider is destroyed, it counts as dangerous terrain, you can sit your squad ON the destroyed Raider and wait out the rest of the game. If anyone wants to get you off you have a 3+ cover save (2+ if you go to ground) and you count as being in cover, so if they charge you they strike equal with your fists and after your Sword/Claws AND have to take dangerous terrain tests! Nasty.

I'd punch myself in the face if I pulled that trick with my Deathwing. Good thing I have 2 Whirl Winds and 32 Termies instead

    Sheer diabolical genius...

Even better then my plan of posting all my objectives in trees and DWA'ing a shooting squad onto them and relying on a 3+ "go to ground" save.

Edit: Hmm...well, the BGB describes wrecks as a 4+ cover save, so it's the same a wood.

We (gaming group) don't have to resort to doing that to ourselves as 2 of the regular gamers are ex-bikers (outlaw, and I s#!t you not), so believe you me when I say that we don't have many dramas in our group because we all behave ourselves.

Thanks to you guys who answered my query for me..I'm going to stick with the shooty squad going in the LR for now as I also have 2 AC/Dccw Dreads w/Heavy Flamers drop podding in, so along with the 2 LRC and c/c squads I should be able to keep the opposing General fairly busy.

LEJ...how often has 'seize the initiative' stuffed with your plans, and what can we(I) do to counter/ease the problem when it happens?

I've not yet had the bad luck to run afowl of Sieze the Initiative. I just don't like it on principle.
To counter it you just have to remember it when you deploy.
You may need to compromise a good turn 1 rush to be in cover just in case. As long as you keep it in mind its not too bad to deal with when it shows up.
