    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

If you are using a shooty Deathwing Deep Striking is not overly good.

The shooting we can put out is amazing. The general tactic is to take our whole army and destroy our opponents army unit by unit. Because we are so small in number our opponent is not normally able to deliver a whole army back at us in shooting. Also, most players run some sort of assault unit that will take 2 rounds or more to engage us. This unit is not shooting.

When you choose to deep strike you scatter your shooting and weaken you strongest ability. If you choose to deep strike the whole army you will dillute your shooting even more.

Now assaulty Deatwing would benefit from deep striking your army, or so one would think. Again, you are not coming down all at the same time. You are also not hitting 100% of the time where you would like. And finally, you have to survive a whole round of shooting while you sot still. Not fun

Now, a dreadnought in a pod can be a great distraction and cause all sorts of disruption. I know many have used them to good effect on this hallowed thread and hope they can let you in on their secrets.

    Hope that helps some,

For assault DW, you're basically sacrificing any squads you DS so you better be prepared to lose them. They can distract some enemies long enough to keep them off your LRs but otherwise, its a waste.
Drop Podding a dread is almost always a better option.

Sorry if I missed it earlier in the thread, but how are you guys finding Planetstrike?

I've played a fair few games of it now, and must say DW Attackers are pretty lethal.
Defence is somewhat hard, as we don't have the manpower to spread around the place.

too bad DA can't use ironclads, that would be a nice addition to an assaulty DW army imo

    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

I had a great game last night with my Assault DW vs. a Vanilla Marine list.

My list consisted of the following:
    Belial with Craws
2 Termies squads, 4 claws, one with CF/HF
    1 Termie squad, 4 claws, 1 w/CF & HF, Battle Standard
    1 Termie squad, Assault cannon
    Ven Dread, ML and PC
    3 LRC
    = 2000 points.

Other marine army was something like this
    Commander w/ Relic Blade
    Libby in Termie armour
3 10 man squad in Rhino (ML and Flamer in each)
    10 man assault squad
LR, with 5 man assault termie squad
    Dread with MM
Ven Dread with AC and Claw
    5 man scout squad.

I had 1st turn. Placed all LRCs forward aggressively, with dread in back, and AC Termie squad to DWA. He placed is squad forward aggressively as well. Capt. and Libby were not with any squad, placed solo behind rhino wall. Scout infiltrated near my LRCs, had ML and sniper rifles.

On my turn, DWA near the scouts to shoot em up...kinda, downed 2 as they were in cover. Raiders forward, MM on his LR two times...cant move. MM on his rhino, nuttin. Dread ML and PC onto rhino...nuttin.

He moved forward to lascannon my LRC..nothing. Scouts managed to get one Termie! The horror! He shot at the rest of my armour...managed nothing!

My turn, murdered the scouts, killed dead. MM twice in his MM dread, nuttin! MM his LR, cant move. He moved up again, dismount from rhinos. LR shot MM off one of my LRCs. Thats about it.

I moved up again and dismount from LRCs, assault 2 of 3 marine squads, 3rd unit didnt make the terrain check. Murdered far too many..heh. MM on his dread again. Lost its MM and its Robster Craw. I suffered no losses. He dismounts from his LR to charges my Assault squad...its a tie, we each lost 2. He had one LC and 4 TH/SS..good saves for me. The next turn, I got the rest of his Termies, while losing 4 of mine.

The CFs did their job vs. his Ven Dread, carving off his Claw, and ultimately blowing it up. Gotta love the CF. Belial took out his Captain, and was eyeing up the Libby. Finally wiped out the rest of his Tac. Marines. My dread took pot shots and the assault marines, killing 6 of 10. The remaining 4 charged the dread, and the SGT had melta bombs. It was a draw each round, sadly.

My opponent gave up at the top of turn 5. In total I lost 6 Termies and one MM on a LRC. He had handful of models left.

LC DW termies are brutal on the charge...brutal. Combine that with being mounted in the LRCs, it is a devastating combination. Roll up, shoot alot, bail out, kill the rest. Gotta love it.

    later.

    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

Been away for a while but I got into a discussion recently and remembered a thought about using other DA special characters.

I'm mostly thinking about using Azrael in an assault unit in a crusader (Why change what works for me?)
Obviously I need Belial too, shame I can't get a librarian for the extra 'apothecary' effect but the Lion Helm is going to be awesome for the inv save improvement.
Taking Belial with SB&PS and having one SB in the unit and a heavy weapon gives a decent amount of shooting and IF they actually cannot reach combat, there's a combi plasma in there too.

Anyway, list and report to follow (If I can get a game...)

What are your thoughts on using a model in terminator armour for "counts as" Azrael? He seems very cool but aesthetically he's the gaijin that stands out.

I guess it comes down to opponent's agreement, as for most things...

I've just finished painting a squad of AoBR termies with the DA assault cannon added in. Very easy fit.

    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

Here's a few pics of my Deathwing model using Assault on Black Reach terminators with Deathwing Assault Cannon:

    -AoBR TM Unit
-AoBR TM with DW ASS (front)
-AoBR TM with DW ASS (right)
-AoBR TM with DW ASS (left)
-AoBR TM with DW ASS (back)
-AoBR TM with DW ASS (overhead)

AoBR right arm pin and the DW ASS slot aren't a perfect fit (if memory serves me correct), but a little super glue will fix that.

Currently my Deathwing army isn't high my list of armies to paint, so all my DW models are simply primed with white spray paint and washed heavily with gryphon sepia. It surprisingly turned out well and the armor color is very close to bleach bone.

GW spray paint skull white + GW gryphon sepia wash = super fast semi-painted Deathwing army on the budget

Nice standard. Mine looks similar but the flag itself is still black...or rather black again, I've tried to paint it a dozen times and keep starting again

What do people think of the triple LRC list then? I know several people run it and I think it would be awesome to play.

    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

It is standard for me now. Since I am running LRC's with Assault Termies, I tend to close the distance fairly quickly. That makes the MM extra gooder for tank killing. And when not popping tanks, they are shooting the holy hell out of whatever is within 12".

The lascannon seems to me to be obsolete now, at least in our area. The melta has taken over. Three in a list is working great for me.

Warning though. If you are doing a bits order for the Hurricane Bolters, make sure you tell them if you want the whole sponson with bolters, otherwise you will just the bolters...happened to me.

    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

I've used 2 LRC and 1 LR a lot, I think 3 LRC would be a better list.
I've been subbing in with a Prometheus though, it really works well. I expect 3LRC to work better, especially with the possibility of 3 separate MM shots after releasing the assault cargo.

I hace 2 LRC's and need a third Raider, so I was considering a Prometheus although it doesn't have as many Weapons Systems as a LRC. Still humming and harring on that one.

I use Assault TDA's so the close-range Raiders are a 'given' imo. I have C/Fists and Dreads for AT.

    Re: Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

Some time ago, you guys thought of the possibility to field a terminator force with codex SM. The main drawback was the minimal scoring units you'd have.

But why not use the Land speeder storm in order to trade low number and strengh of such units with mobility.

Ok, that's far from the pure deathwing but it's interesting.

Here the list I tried for 2000 points.

    - Lysander
    - 2 LRC with multimelta and armor
    - 2 terminator squads (10 each) (using the combat squad rule to split them) 2 AC, 2 CML, 2 CF
    - 2 scouts squad (5 each) kitted for close combat (Power sword, Melta bomb , Heavy bolter) mounted in 2 Land speeders storm with Heavy Flamer.

I was not fully convinced by the sinergy between lysander and this army.
I'll try with an epistolary with terminator armor, gate of infinity and a SB as an HQ.

    What do you think?

well first off you have 10 scouts for troops, as soon as they are dead you CAN'T win 2/3 of the scenarios reguardless of what you do. i would think the only reason you would want to run SM all termy force is for better storm shields and you didn't seem to equip them with TH and SS, and lastly there is no point in running lysander wing any longer as he doesn't do anything for terms except allow re-rolls for their storm bolters, which while not a bad ability, having to take scouts in land speeders is not a good trade off by a mile. your terms aren't fearless, and not scoring, and you have to run scouts(the most horrid thing in SM codex imho), so why would you want to run all SM term army as opposed to pure DW anyways?

I disagree. On a table with enough terrain you will probably be able to keep the scouts safe, lysander is awesome IMO and you can still draw easily in objective missions and still win if you wipe the enemy out. I do agree though that taking advantage of the SS is a good idea.
