Tactica: Deathwing 5th Edition

I am new in this forum and this is actually my first post. I am new to the gaming part of 40k but not in the Fluff. I was just collecting books, and some selected models until I was offered a Deathwing Army. I actually was not planning on really getting it but the fluff and the fact that it has a low model count made me decide to play Deathwing; from reading the posts specially the one done by Russell's teapot, I find the army I have quite lacking.

So far, this is what I own.

From reading the tactica, I already have problems with the assault cannon and the lack of th/ss. Also, using this list it has about 125 points missing. I was planning on a dreadnought but I decided against it ( I would rather save up for the crusader or assault termies). Luckily, I have a Njal model which I will use as a librarian. I have wanted to play 40k and now I have an army i can use. With a little manipulation, I ended up with this list

Belial - 130pts
Librarian in Term Armour 145 (Njal)
DW Squad 1 - AC, sb/pw, 2 x sb/pf, apoc - 275
DW Squad 2 - AC, sb/pw, 3 x sb/pf - 245
DW Squad 3 - CML, sb/pw, 3x sb/pw - 235
DW Squad 4 - CML, sb/pw, sb/cf, 2x sb/pw - 235
DW Squad 5 - CML, sb/pw, sb/cf, 2x sb/pw - 235
Total = 1500

That is 1500 on the dot. I just changed the arms from chain fists to a power fist.

My main plan is to start playing and learning the game and my goal is to play Pure Deathwing. I know most of the lists posted in this thread are either Green or Doublewing but i would like to follow Mr. Teapot's pure Deathwing approach because I love the models and it gives me focus on what to get. Also, there is nothing grander than seeing a line of Terminators and big tanks as your army.

I know this is so far from competitive, even far from smart but i would like to get a feel for the game at the moment. Can anybody share some tips if I am using this list besides getting ready to lose and die?

I have already ordered a Terminator Chaplain Blister, a box of Assault Terminators and a Land Raider Crusader/Redeemer box. When I save up again I will get a second Assault termie and Land Raider Crusader box but that would be at around July at the earliest. I think I will not be getting another Terminator box since i already have 3 CMLs and the 2 crusaders will be enough to use in a 1500 game.

I would like to start playing even before 6th ed comes in so I get to have a feel for the game and could help my transition to 6th ed. Thank you for reading this post and I really find Deathwing really nice and would to concentrate on it once I get the correct models. One thing is for sure, I would want to really go Purely Deathwing at the moment. Green and Doublewing is still not in my mind until the end or next year.

My top tip?

Magnetise!

You can buy a THSS upgrade kit from GW direct. Or you can go to ebay for plastic parts (the GW kit is metal, a pain & not really in scale to the new terminators, but it does the job). Buy some 3mm/1mm round magnets online somewhere (there are loads of retailers). I'm sure you can trade out some CMLs (or make some from a bitz box).

That way you don't have to shell out for new terminators (although you will have to shell out) & you can run terminators however you like.

You'll have a hard time footslogging without at least some SS in the squads.

LRCs are a blast, but they aren't competative. They are fun & you will learn a lot!

Thank you Sir! I intend to stay with the 'Wing.

What I did with some is that their arms are pinned so I can detached them and pit another arm. I just got 6 Termies with TH/SS, which I will distribute to 3 squads. I just need another box or bits.

I just have a question, most of the lists are for 1500 - 1750. Using the Teapot list of 3 Landraiders (2 crusaders and a godhammer) belial, term chap, 3 squads of cml, 2th/ss, sb/cf, and sb/pf at 1750, what can one bring for the remaining 250pts? Another squad?

Caveat - Not played at 2k (UK player), but I would imagine 3 Raiders and 4 DW squads would be the way to go.

I'd personally go for three Raiders of the same type, and if you're running a chaplain they would be Crusaders

yes the chaplain raider combo works quite well. the onmly problem you run into with that setup is melta heavy armies. they can and will make your life hard.

ehhh at this point i'd rather just play what makes me happy all TH/SS is competitive but it can be downright boring

@RT I remember the heady days when you'd talk up the survivability of Raiders vs Melta

Pre-IG it was all gravy.

That codex did 2 things:
1) Gave squads access to 3 melta guns at BS4, which has proliferated every codex since
2) Made AV12 spam popular & meant that every other army needed melta to get through it (until SW & BA missile spam)

When we had our old smoke launchers & PotMS, life was very good to us too...

Oh my area just love their meltas. I think that is why I inherited the list I got. No body plays shooty deathwing anymore. Though I am bringing these boys back I may not know much about playing yet but I love my Deathwing Termies.

Update: I got 5 th/ss termies to add to my 5 squads to try out. I actually got 6 but I might use that as Belial.

To be fair, all of our options are covered with the two plastic boxes. Would be nice to be able to buy a CML separately though

But do the plastic arms look good on the FW resin Terminators? I was thinking of picking up a set of these guys because they are cool but those arm options do not make want to spend that kind of cash.

And yes, I would like an actual DW box with the new Codex. Would be grand...

An update running the Ezekiel/Vindicator Deathwing list. Went 4-1 in a 2 day tournament played some really good players. Total tournament record since starting using Zeke and the Vindis is 7-1. Zeke played absolute havoc on enemy psykers all weekend. Got another 3 round tournament coming up next Saturday that one is 1750 so will be adding a 4th terminator squad to my list.

my plan is DWA drop Aric and squad 1 near a threat amd squad 4 near another eliminate those threats and then drop the fun in to finish up.

So the question is How Stupid am I?

The only "stupid" part of your list is that you're using Dreads (and expensive Pods!) instead of Speeders/Preds. Otherwise it's fine. In a friendly-competitive or competitive-friendly environment it should perform OK, probably doing better on KP missions.

Before 5th, 50 points for a Drop Pod was just expensive. Now not only is it expensive, but it's not necessary to make it so you can fire a Dreadnought's 24" weaponry on turn 1 due to 5th edition deployment being that much closer than 4th (has it been that way in everyone else's experience too? Mostly talking about the removal of Capture and Control here, but it's very rare to have a battle take place over the entire table anymore).
