The Devotees of Elazar - Chaos Mortals

~ The Devotees Of Elazar ~

“Rejoice,” he told me, “for I am Elazar.” For his fell deed Slaanesh gave the gift of immortality. He was elevated to Daemonhood and I stood in awe for I had witnessed the birth of the death of man. He rose into the sky on feathered wings, radiant, more glorious than the sun, it’s light paling in the Daemon’s aura. His harmonious voice filled the skies as he spoke to me then. My heartbeat froze, desperate not to besmirch the wondrous sound with its crude thudding.
“I am temptation, I am vanity. I am the voice that says yes when all other say no. I am the dark ambition that broods at the core of every man. I am your salvation and I am your doom. Love me or fear me, it matters not, you will be my slave.”

May this document provide further proof against him in his ongoing trial and may Sigmar’s righteous fires free him from his ravings!

Elazar The Glorified is a Daemon Prince of Slaanesh. Such is his standing in the eyes of Slaanesh and indeed his arrogance that he is worshipped by many as a god in his own right. In the far north the Diatchi worship him in part as a proxy for Slaanesh but in part as a separate deity. The Diatchi are a collection of tribes of predominantly Kurgan stock, the tribes exist in a state of war with eachother but at times a High Zar is able to bring the lower Zar's of the tribes into line and lead them to war all the while the Daemon Prince watches over his Glorious Host...
The followers of Elazar are not confined to just the northern tribes. In the darkest depths of the forests of the Old World an ascending Beastlord is starting to gather the rival herds in the name of the Daemon.
And worse still in the heart of the Empire's cities the Cult of Elazar continues to attract more followers.

This project log has gotten quite long now. Also a lot has changed since I first started it and I think that to see the progress of the more current Devotees of Elazar you'd be best starting a bit further on such as here. However please feel free to browse the lot if you have the time and inclination!

Ground breaking or not, it sounds very interesting. I've had a similar idea before about kitbashing the bloodletter kits and marauder kits together, but warriors sounds good. Pics ASAP!

Re: The Devotees of Elazar - Chaos Mortals

    ~Original Post ~

I've already modelled a unit of 10 Chaos Warriors (Chosen, at least until the new releases!). I decided I wanted them to carry two handed weapons and specifically swords. I used the Hellblades from the new Bloodletters pastics to make these weapons and filled or filed the Khornate symbols on the hilts. To make the warriors carry the blades with both hands I had to do a lot of cutting and then a lot of sculpting. I cut the hands off of the Warrior arms and then cut the weapons from them. I sculpted new arms to hold the sword infront two handed in front of the warriors. Because of the way the plastic warriors are sculpted I had to cover up the original forearms that are a part of the torso piece. I did this by extending their cloaks round their shoulders with green stuff.

I'll be honest, I'm not particulary experienced with using modelling putty so they're nothing ground breaking.

    -Pics to follow-

I'm afraid the pictures aren't great. They are all undercoated and I've started base coating them. 1 is almost finished. Decided to go for bleached bone coloured armour on these. I'm thinking of adding veins to the armour as these guys are chosen and it's a part of them. Probably in a nice Slaaneshi purple.

    My Aspiring Champion - Amador.
He will go with either the warriors or a unit of Marauders depending. I wanted him to carry a great weapon but something that would allow him the extra attacks on his profile etc. for being an Aspiring Champion. So I decided on a Darth Maul-esque double bladed weapon. I've undercoated him but want to add a bit more to make him a little more unique and make him stand out as one of Elazar's chosen few.

Re: The Devotees of Elazar - Chaos Mortals

Done lots of work on Zorion The Resplendent so far. Decided to use a Carnosaur for his Daemonic Mount, Gentza. I plan on adding some chains and a few other small details yet but for the most part the model itself is complete just need to finish painting it.
I really hate the skull helmet on the Warrior sprue normally but decided one night that I wanted to add the Chaos star banner top to the helmet. I was thinking of religious art where Jesus, Angels and saints etc have a sun like halo behind their heads in paintings and decided a chaos star would be appropriate for a kind of chaos anti-christ and then the idea went from there.
Will post more (and hopefully better quality) pictures soon.

Hey, check out reik's log for a similar thing, he converted his warriors too:

I have to say Im so keen on Zorian's head, mainly because it seems to big for the slaaneshi body IMO. Amador looks good though.

And are you undercoating your models by hand? Get a spray man its quicker!

Thanks for the link, had a look through and see what you mean.

That would be my only slight concern with Zorion is that the head is maybe a little bit too big but by the same token I kind of like it as well because the helmet is meant to have been Elazar The Daemon Prince's before he was made mortal and so was never made to fit Zorion but now that he wears it it's a part of him and he can't eat etc so he has thinned out or something. Dunno, thanks for the comments.

Yeah I really like Amador, still want to add something to make him a little more Champion-like.

Yeah, I want to get a spray gun or some such for the next batch of warriors etc so I can get them painted up much quicker but wanted to do this unit by hand as they were intended to be chosen warriors. However, judging by the rumours threads there'll be new minis for them that'll look much meaner so will have to do some work with them when they come out!

Re: The Devotees of Elazar - Chaos Mortals

I've finished painting Zorion now and I'll try and update the pictures tomorrow if I can. I've started putting together a Chaos Giant, so far I've gone for the standard Chaos Giant parts but might add some more detail in Green Stuff after. But for the most part I want it to be the paintjob that makes it unique. I think I'm going to cover him in tribal tattoos and maybe add some piercings and jewellery to make him a little more Slaaneshi.

    Thanks!

I'm afraid I haven't been able to post any more pictures yet, re-jigging my ISP at home so don't have access at home at the minute but hope to get this sorted to get pictures updated at the weekend!

Re: The Devotees of Elazar - Chaos Mortals

Gotten my home internet connection sorted and been on holiday and now can finally post an update!

Here's Zorion. Quite pleased with this. I'm still debating whether to add some horns to the Carnosaur and maybe attach the chains to these, although I feel that might be a little too 'add spikes and horns for chaos'. What does everybody else think?

Re: The Devotees of Elazar - Chaos Mortals

These are the latest pics of Amador. I plan on him being something of a challenge monster and the hard hitter in a unit of Marauders. He's going to wear the Armour of Damnation most likely to make him fairly hard to kill.

The armour is base coated in Khemri brown and then gets a coat of Bleached Bone, this gets a couple of washes of Gryphonne Sepia before being highlighted with Bleached Bone again.

The fur on the cloaks was base coated in black then drybrushed Fortress Grey, with a light drybrush of Space Wolves Grey before a thin of wash of Hormagaunt Purple.

This is Neron. The Halberd comes from the Mounted Champion of Slaanesh and the shield from the Slaaneshi champion on foot. The horns on his helmet and the spikes on his back are yet more pieces from the Khorne Bloodletters plastics.

Re: The Devotees of Elazar - Chaos Mortals

Nice work mate. Looking good, keep going.

EDIT: Right, some real comment. Praise is all motivational and all, but it don't help you improve. IMO, the figures need a deeper contrast. taking Amador as an example, his armour is very flat. There's no highlights or shading visible in the pics. Edging works well on armoured models like Chaos Warriors, but is not to everyones taste. An edge of khaki or bleached would however, increase the dramatic nature of the model easily, and since its named, it should be extravegent. Either that or try blending from a dark colour at the top of the plate through to a lighest colour, with the colours you have now as the mid tone.

There is perhaps another problem I'm having. They don't look to me like champions, more chosen warriors with extensive conversions. There is a knack to creating a hero-esque model, and it becomes an art form when its done seemlessly. A whole unit of these would look fantastic, rivalling even Reiks, but since you already have converted warriors as well, you need something more for you heroes. First thing I'd suggest is using a bare head, not helmeted. Straight away you can achieve visual impact with a great looking expression. Neron's pose is great, but add a well painted face and you get character. Hope this helps.

Re: The Devotees of Elazar - Chaos Mortals

Hi Nightsword, thanks for your comments. I really appreciate you taking the time for a real critique because as you say, my painting will never improve without it. I agree on the shading, I have been looking over the models the last few days I definitely agree they are too flat so will be working on that. I think blending suits my tastes more than edging but like you say would look particularly striking on named models.

As for the models not looking like champions this is something I whole-heartedly agree on. It's been bugging me all through painting them that there isn't that extra something to them. I'm thinking of maybe using those two as unit champions instead. The current Neron championing the current warriors with the model for Amador moving to a unit of Warriors with two hand weapons which might look cool. Then I can remodel more characterful minis for Amador and Neron.

I'll get to work on that over the weekend and post an update again soon!

Re: The Devotees of Elazar - Chaos Mortals

Look forward to it mate I think using them as unit champions is a great idea, and I can't wait to see what you'll come with for the new heroes. How about using the 40K commander kit as a basis? I've always wanted to do that. Strip it of its 40k-ness, add a big sword and shield, and bam, a unique hero for your army.

    Good luck mate.

Quite like the idea of the 40k lord stripped down. Might have to do something with that. Waiting on a couple of ebay bids to put together something else that I'll hopefully be able to start work on and get posted up ASAP!

Re: The Devotees of Elazar - Chaos Mortals

Here's a pic of my dining room table. As you'll see, quite a few WIPs, and a WMD WIP there as well in my giant! Got plenty of Marauders to be getting on with, as well as a couple of sorcerors and their familiars and also a new Exalted Champion for my army with a little bit more of a 'heroic' aura to him. I've decided that he'll be taking over as the army general when he's finished as he'll travel on foot with the main block of troops whilst Zorion and the likes bomb forward at break neck speed to make a mess of their enemies.
