Thanks hellheart. Drop pod is 95% finished. Its in the same style, trying to get a functional look rather than the cartoon look I normally end up with. pics soon.

You know the same thing crossed my mind, but I was so pleased with the skin tone I didn't want to mess it up - do you ever do that?! I try to do an army with the same bits. for instance the blood ravens all use mostly aquilla eagle or skull and wings torsos, which meant I had all teh hosing ones left for this army. Similarly with helmets, I horde all the bits I need until I've got anough (the IH horde took me 2 years! but it was worth the wait for the encouraging comments!!) and then I stick them all together.

Its dead easy (as is the whole scheme in fact) rotting flesh base, add white a few times for a highlight and a touch of badab black in the eye sockets.

its that simple! no secrets here my friend!

    Always a critique Shad ;-)

What I've done is pick out a few cables on the sgt and leave the rest deliberatly with a 'functional not fancy' look.

it works in two ways in that, one it draws attention to the sgt and two, means I can knock them out pretty fast. thanks for keeping looking in though mate, really appreciate your support.

I know - it shouldn't be this easy, but it is.

I spent ages agonsing over the scheme but I think i've hit a good balance of looking nice without being highly labour intensive.

Drop pod and a sample biker over the weekend.

About how long would you say it takes for you to paint a bog standard marine? (BTW none of your marines are bog standard)

I totally understand the fear of messing something up, more times then I want to count an attempt has lead to a fail, and the second attempt/repair has never been as good as the first. Eyes seem to be a big one of these for me.

Sorry Rev I don't mean to sound negative or anything, its just my personal opinion I had in fact seen the ones on the sergeant and had just wondered why you hadn't put them on anyone else - but your explanation makes it clear!

these guys? difficult to say, with accelerated drying times I'd do one from start to finish in around 2 hours? thats a wild guess though - I batch 4 or 5 and often have a few batches on teh go in different stages so a precisefigure would be impossible unless I sat down with one guy and timed it. Which I might do one day, you never know!

yeh I did, it was good. I think I'm going to have to read it again to fully appreciate it though. bits of it were great, bits were rushed or poor - but my view mught change with a re read. if you were in the UK I'd offer to lend you my copy!

The Iron Hands look awesome with the bionics and the pale skin.

The Techmarine to Sergeant conversion is a stroke of genius.

    Great work as always.

Excellent stuff here Rev....but I do have a question about the use of bits....we see the same head, the same pair of legs several times in a squad...making the poses repetitive by the legs alone...won´t that make the superb army look a bit broing?

or do you plan to convert your own mechanical legs/arms?

Thanks Ganymene. It was fairly simple actually, nothing to technical. Two arm swaps and a standard SM backpack is all. positioning the Auspex arm to fire the combi melta was the only bit that took more than a few seconds thought. The second one will be harder because he's staring off into space (thunderfire techy).

Thanks SM. I'm really pleased with it too as an alternative to black highlighting.

Its a really good point Dio.

The answer that my use of bits is quite deliberate. I tend to amas huge stockpiles of sprues etc, which I then clip off my favourite bits (beakie helms, running legs, whatever) and then do a themed army using just a small selection of bits.

For instance, the fleshtearers which I sold earlier this year used bits only from the assault marine and devestator boxed sets. The Blood ravens have over 30 beakie helmets and the Iron hands will be all very similar looking.

I do it deliberatly for two reasons. Firstly because I really like a force to look unified not only through colour choice, but also through the use of bits - almost like a 'uniform' of sorts. The second reason is that I personally find it a lot more pleasing to my eye to have a force which looks strongly coherant on the table.

I do try hard to make sure that no marine with one type of helmet has the same type of legs or pose etc - and that marines with the helmets or suchlike are looking in different directions, and spread the use of limited metal bits fairly throughout any force to get an even distribution of bits.

That said it does get hard. The bikers all have some kind of home made bionic (except the tester biker below) and I've got 4 of these on the bench atm.

Cheers buddy - I might try a raven guard for a laugh, just for you. On the note of sales, the Blood ravens are up for grabs if anybody wants to spend their christmas money. I'll even consider offers on the Iron Hands even though they're not finished!

    The pod and first 10 man squad are done, just awaiting photographs, in the meantime here's a test biker;

I've tried to build up a small snow bank around his front tyre to mak eit look like he's stopped in a drift.

I've used gloss varnish rather than drybrushed dirt on the tyres, as when I've just driven through snow my tres are glossy with liquid not all muddy and gritty.

    Hope you like, comments appreciated.

    Re: Rev's 'mostly marines' Showcase

    Me likey.

I just wish that the body of the marine was as detailed as the helmet/shoulder guards. Thats not something that can be helped really, without spending more time on an otherwise rank and file model though. Edit: I just realised that this is a test biker... answers my statement pretty well.

EDIT: To answer rickie8437's question, the Iron Hands box set is direct sales only and can be found here.

Hmmm interesting explanation...I don´t mind having a whole marine force with beakie helmets or the maximus pattern helmets...because they are like uniformal pattern helmets....

But when it comes to bionics...I see its rather personal to the marine...it gives the marine a background story...yet when you see the same marine bionic head trice in one squad you become to wonder how three marines got the same wound on the head and the same treatment?...well maybe bionic treatments can be very normal and standard....so standard that the injured marines get on a factory line belt and get the same procedure....but to me always from the Iron Hands background was that when a marine received its bionics its like a whole ritual performed by the Iron Father himself on the injured marine?....

anyway rev you must have quite allot of spare bits laying around for trade?

And can´t wait to see the other four bikers of yours....the blue headlight is something new to me on the bike...personaly think the yellow would give more contrast to the dark model and make the headlight stand more out....but then again the bright yellow might not fit with the ice theme and the ice blue/white of the iconography.....

Anyway keep up the goodwork rev its great to see an iron hands army done justice....
