Re: Captain Brown's 8th Necromunda Imperial Guard Regiment - The 'Spiders' Painting L

Well as promised here is another update. Finished the rest of the Vox Operators who started out as the old (Mark I) Veteran Sergeants…the ones missing heads and arms:

I used a Forgeworld arm, a set of binoculars from the original Ork plastics, a Catachan head, and lots of heads from the Tank Accessory Sprue.

Next up are the rest of the Mark II Sergeants and the rest of my new Vox Operators.

    The long painting war continues…

Or perhaps your favourite pet has decided that your figure make far better projectiles than the miniature mouse bought for that purpose. When that time comes, you are faced with several choices, retire the army or sell it on ebay and start another, go into a new army, or revive the old and make it seem new.

The time has come for this last option for my Imperial Guard Necromunda Regiment, this is the army I field the most, they are plastic Cadians and fairly rugged and durable (whereas I find my Forgeworld Elysians are fragile and my Steel Legion are more restrictive in their options).

How many of you remember this?

The box art of the first Imperial Guard plastics. No longer available from Games Workshop, but the first affordable troops provided for an army I started to play with the release of White Dwarf 109.

Here is a slightly more complete image of the picture scanned from the magazine.

The images from White Dwarf and any quotes from the background of that magazine or other publication remain the property of Games Workshop, as do any others used in this log.

This got me started and soon I had a painted army of over 100 of these little guys...that was three boxes and quite a few lead Guardsmen thrown in for Special Weapons, Command figures, etc.

That army went to Sweden I think...before ebay actually and another replaced it (several armies actually). When the new Cadians first came out I got the army box and started painting up a new Necromunda Regiment based on the original artwork.

Some of you will remember my old avatar and some photos of bits of the army from Portent.

    More images:
    Command HQ
    Command Section One
    Command Section Two
    Infantry Squad One
    Infantry Squad Two
    Infantry Squad Three
    Infantry Squad Four
    Infantry Squad Five
    Support Squad One
    Ogryn Squad

So this painting log is my repairing/repainting, adding/replacing and general improvement of my army. Some of you will remember my army from old posts, some of you have fought against the army. The paint scheme is based upon the original plastic Imperial Guard from Rogue Trader, the infamous zebra/tiger stripe pattern on Codex Grey. Now I have not followed everything completely the same, the armour has changed and I did not like the look of metallic helmets on the Cadians nor have I gone for the multi-coloured squad markings or helmet markings. But the majority of the armour is the same, it is not the best camouflage pattern, as painting the stripes on accurately would be time consuming to the extreme…and we are talking about painting Imperial Guardsmen…which means painting a lot of them.

As you can see I already had a base of 75+ painted figures, which is a pretty good start, but a little low when you think about Imperial Guard, I was regularly using older metal Cadian figures and tanks to augment my troops.

Image limit reached, more to follow.

I remember the artwork well. Loved the imagery from the roguw trader days. The mini's may not have been the quality of todays but they had a charm of their own. Looking forward to this blog.

Re: Captain Brown's 8th Necromunda Imperial Guard Regiment - The 'Spiders' Painting L

Thanks for the comments. And sheep, I check out your log all the time, the marmite paint chipping technique was ace (I believe I said so on the log as well).

OK, another update as promised some more Mark II Sergeants:

As you can see the one on the right has a bit of an issue with his hat, I did not notice this until he was painted and I am debating if it is worth popping it off and reseating it...from all other angles it seems fine. I think that particular one came out a little wide.

The Sergeant on the left is the first one without rank chevrons, I was a little rushed and did not graft a set on...maybe later I will tack a set on for a quick promotion.

I added a holster to the one on the right to balance out his arm being held up with the Storm Bolter...while not practical (holding the Storm Bolter like that), the pose seemed to fit.

Next up will be some more newly painted figures, more Vox Operators. Then some Veterans...yes, I will have a little Forgeworld in this army, but not allot.

    The long painting war continues...

Re: Captain Brown's 8th Necromunda Imperial Guard Regiment - The 'Spiders' Painting L

More images…sometimes I wish there was no image limit, it would make these updates easier…but then someone would go and spam a thread with thousands of images in one post to create a mega post…

Special weapons…a guard unit can never have enough and rumours of the new codex say there are going to be more of them.

Because you know you can never have enough Guardsmen…funny for a supposed repaint, update I seem to be doing an awful lot of straight out painting.

Never fear, more painted figures to come, but the image limit has been reached.

Next up, Veterans and Vox Operators, as I am not sure how much painting I am going to get done this weekend.

Re: Captain Brown's 8th Necromunda Imperial Guard Regiment - The 'Spiders' Painting L

More images…now some more new stuff, first the Vox Operators I am adding to each squad for variety.

Then some Veterans, the first four from Forgeworld, I am going to do some more with the extra Shotgun that comes with the set and an extra one from a trade…I will add one of my Veteran Sergeants and some Special Weapons to fill out the squad shortly.

The Veteran on the left uses an Eldar head and the next one has a Vox set vice the back pack (again just to mix up the models a little).

Image limit reached, next up should be a few of the Special Weapons finished to give my Veteran Squad a little punch.

Just wanted to say I'm really enjoying this thread, chief, always liked that camo scheme myself. The veteran sergeants are very nice (they actually remind a bit of the soldiers out of Stargate- I will now flagellate myself).

Nice work on getting some variety into that swarm of humanity too, keep it up!

very nice - i remember in WD132 or thereabouts the initial confrontation rules (pre necromunda game) and the stories about gangers being recruited into the IG.

i like your new models - however I feel they need to be a little grungier, like the third from left guy in last pics (just my opinion - as I'm sure just like the army - the IG could force them all to shave their heads, etc.)

    Great job!

I've seen some of these guys before and still love them. The Spiders are one of the iconic regiments. I chose the Death Blades my self but must admit the Spiders are probably more well known. You have achieved a great take on an old theme and colours scheme.

Your new stormbolters are way better than the previous version. Great idea and execution.

It just might be that some of your rogue trader era plastic guard has ended up in my care - here in sweden. I have aquired alot of them. The project is currently on hold but just might get up and running again when the new codex arrives.

    Keep it up!

To each his own. I admit mine are a little more 20th Century than Space 1999.

You might, whoever bought them paid about 200 Kroner I think. There were about 100 figures including some home made Lascannons on trails vice the shoulder mounted ones.

Thank you to everyone who commented always helps to keep the drive up to finish more. Some update pictures, taken at night so they are a little bit darker than normal.

Here are two regular Troopers I finished off on the weekend.

The first squad of the first platoon (the Sergeant and the Vox Operator are from the recently painted and the other eight are earlier paintjobs).

I have to find a way to take pictures of a squad in one rank, otherwise my focus is always a little off, this is what comes from an old 2 Mega-pixel camera.

And a little teaser, some Snipers...

OMG they have lost their heads somewhere...

Sweet as, I love the camo and the painting in general, tis nice! That pic was from a 2 megapix camera? Hmm, wonder if my old one is actually capable after all?

The snipers have already been taken down with headshots from opposing snipers darnit! This is like when I try to play Halo against my buds, nothing like noob sniping for a quick death

Keep up the good work, sir, I want more, MORE damn you! Your Imperium needs you! Ahem.
