    The blog! It lives yet!

Just a quick update - Due to Mass Effect (all three, back to back, same character...) getting in the way and having a wedding to pay for, much of my modeling time went down the drain, but I did get some vacation days this week to at least catch up a little. I did some minor colours on the whirlwind and did some spraying for the Vindicator dozer blade! Hurrah!

It's a small image, but hopefully it gets the point across. I felt yellow and black hazard stripes were a) redundant and b) a little too Iron Warriors. Red was an option, but I think this white and black stands out and is extremely striking. I've still got to touch up and whatnot, but I've quite pleased with the chevrons themselves - Good practice for my eventual Saim-Hann vehicles!

Lol I share your burden concerning mass effect, it's a fantastic game (apart from the ending) . I'm doing exactly the same and meanwhile my fists are taking some dust too. (I made the walkthrough with a soldier first and now I'm using a sentinel on insanity and it's a blast, you really have to use some teamwork in order to succeed and it's good)

Anyway, the stripes are really great. Will you add some weathering?

I'll probably add some, but not much. I like the "fresh" look on a lot of my models for some reason. The main reason might be that I'm never satisfied with how "real" my weathering ends up looking.

    Re: Engel's Imperial Fists Blog

Well, I'm not ENTIRELY sure why I can't get my whites balanced currently, so these shots of my completed whirlwind and [almost] finished vindicator. The actual colour is the same as the Land Raider (well, a little different, the switched to the new paints made things a little different)

I have a penchant for naming whirlwinds "His Wrath" and this one is no different. My signature also adorns the front next to the devotional script.

I need a soft sponge to do a bit of weathering, just towards the bottom of the blade. Again, I tend to prefer things more clean looking, but I'm sure the dozer blade is going to have SOME stuff they just can't get off...

Anyway, now these are done, I have 2 Honour Guard, Vladimir Pugh, a librarian, a 5-man devastator squad and a predator to finish this arm up! I managed to get ahold of a spare banner from the 25th Anniversary mini, so that will need to be give to... well someone. Anyway, things are coming together - It's only taken me AN ENTIRE EDITION OF THE GAME to get to this point.

This means my Eldar should be done sometime in 2016. My Night Lords? Who knows. Hopefully with a decent Night Lords Horus Heresy novel a dedicated workspace will speed that up...

So... anyone got any tips on weathering that front dozer blade without spray paint or an airbrush?

Sponging it up with a dirty brown, some grey and maybe orange/brown rust-markings? That's probably what I'd do.

hit all the rivets with watered down brown (chocolate), then hit them again with a spot of mithril (or whatever the current equivalent is). It'll look good on such a clean paint job.

    Re: Engel's Imperial Fists Blog

Thanks for the tips! I'll start work on it as soon as I'm done with this wonderful, wonderful model:

Well, Forge World put up the 6th Ed updates for Sevrin Loth. He's sat on my shelf for about 18 months and after seeing his new rules, it was time to get painting! This is the most work I've put into a model in two days, but I'm pleased with how he's turning out.

The raised detail on his cloth is a pain to paint cleanly, but I'll keep on it, otherwise I'm very pleased with how he's turning out. He'll be playing the role of Franz Grenstein of the Imperial Fists. Since Loth's rules just say "Force Weapon" and I've since used his axe elsewhere, he received a stave, mainly because I think it looks cool.

Engel's number 1 rule of building armies: Pick it because it looks cool. Rules change, models are [almost] forever.

Wow! Some really really nice models there! the honor guard are awesome, love the deathwatch too. Thats one of my favorite WD eps. Just started working on an Imperial fist army myself, just got the command squad at the moment, and they are still need finishing off, but im pretty pleased with how they turned out. Went for the red shoulder trim, but after seeing yours i quite like the black.

Nice job on loth so far, looks very cool with a stave, I'm firmly of the opinion that all psykers should have a staff of some sort

Looking forward to the finished product!

Impressive start! I like the darker red on yours. I chose black simply because at the time I wasn't very good with red (Saim-Hann forcing me to.... ah improve) though neither was I with yellow. To be fair, I was mostly inspired by this image:

It's by KingMong (whose painting method I also adapted!) and though I believe he now works for GW, it informed A LOT of how my Fists are painted. Vets with white helmets, black trim, etc. (I chose to go with red chest eagles though, since they look awesome) This one by Badaboom on Bolter & Chainsword informed my Command shoulder pads (Black and white, a la Black Templars)

Keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing more! Start a thread, we'll all check in!

They just look... weird without. At least to my eyes... He's done. Just need to find time to take a decent photo [that I'm happy with].

    Re: Engel's Imperial Fists Blog

Actually yeah, that first one is awesome! I can see why you chose to base your army on it. I'm really kinda starting to regret not doing a black trim, Just working one the first tactical squad at the mo and ive already started the red trim. Im looking forward to starting work on a Vet squad though, i was going to go for white trim which i thought would look ace, but i think i might go for black trim white inside now like that second photo. Will be a pretty cool contrast, and they will still have plenty of red on them, because im doing red weapon casings. (and i get a bit of black trim in my army )

    Re: Engel's Imperial Fists Blog

Good luck! I recommend starting your own blog here - Imperial Fist types tend to stick together it seems. Something about painting so much yellow...

Right, other than getting a very small Imperial Fist decal to go inside the shoulder-pad Aquila, Chief Librarian Franz Grenstein of the Imperial Fists Librarius is done! I'm absolutely thrilled with the blue, came out perfectly.

And since I can't abide backpacks with banners, he received a Grey Knight backpack.

I've also decided to abandon my current Helbrecht-based Pugh conversion. I've ordered Astarion Moloc from Forge World and will be converting him. He may well lose the dual Thunder-hammers, but I think it's a win in the end.

    Re: Engel's Imperial Fists Blog

Loosing the Dual Thunder Hammers on Pugh is always a victory in my book. His original text never described him as a close-combat monster or a hugely inspiring leader, but as a meticulous planner, who still leads from the front. That, to me, indicates a rather practical-minded and reasonable approach, realising that his forte is planning, and fighting alongside his brothers, which doesn't equate with "Pugh SMASH!" in my world. Oh, and that Forgeworld Librarian is so tasty, especially in Fist colours!

Thanks! And unwanted, I'm inclined to agree!

The new version of Pugh has arrived...

Thoughts for his right arm? Storm bolter is quite big, though I've tweaked the position of arm a bit with boiling water. I've also removed the Minotaur from his right arm since snapping this one.

Bravo good sir, I didn't think anybody would be able to convert Asterion Moloc.

It looks great, the stormbolter looks fine too, I feel you would lose the honored pre-heresy armor feeling if you replaced it.

That's a very proper Chaptermaster. I really like the look of that Stormbolter, but that might be because it resembles the Tigrus-Bolters? Those and the Phobos are my ultimate favourites.

What about paint? Golden armour, or Fist yellow and gold&white details?
