Re: The Trolls are coming! - Scratchbuilding Throgg and his Trolls

    Update!

Thanks for the replies, and i decided to keep the head as it was, with sharpened tusks. Alot has happened and there is not that long way to go before he is done. It needs additional sculpting where the hands and head are attached and the hands are not finished yet.
Still need to make the crown, and i think i will take the advice of making it of horns, so the horns on his back continue up the neck and form a circle on the head.
Also i think i will add armour on the arms (mostly because i am not satisfied with the right arm at all) and also the feet and lower legs will have plate armour. I dont know wether the loin cloth should be cloth or mail... What do you guys think?
Note that the angel is not right in the pictures, the fron foot is supposed to stand on a rock or something to make him more upright.
One big problem is that i think he is probably too big. Though he is the King of all trolls, so he can be bigger than normal trolls are. But he only exactly fits a 40x40mm base.
Well, to the pictures. I hope you like them.

    Thanks for looking

EDIT: Sorry for the crappy looking pics, but lighting is terrible right now

Very, very nice. How long have you been sculpting? How many hours did you put into this model?

Wow this is looking very good so far. I love the pose and the tusks. He looks like he'll be the perfect focal point for a troll army! I'd go for mail for the loin cloth personally. Will be keeping an eye on this with great interest.

Unless he's going to have mail in other places, then I'd go loincloth (sorry elazar )

The texture is looking great at the moment, it''s really impressive stuff. Can't wait to see the feet finished. Nice use of that nice gem there I also feel that the face tusks could use blending in a little more into the face, to make them look like they came from there.

Re: The Trolls are coming! - Scratchbuilding Throgg and his Trolls

Hey all no pictures this time, lend out my memory card, but will have it back tonight with new pictures of the (slow) progress.

@Invinciblebug: Thanks alot! I am also looking forward to both painting this bad boy and making more trolls.

@Malika: Well to be honest i dont think this sculpt is of a standard worth casting. There are many flaws on him that might not show up in the pictures, but i am learning and maybe in the future i will make casts of my sculpts. But i will take that as praise

@Feeder: How long i have been sculpting? Well, this is my first attempt at a scratchbuilt. Almost everything else was my banners and few conversions in my dwarf army (see sig), so i am quite new to it. I havent got a count on the hours i put into him, but actually most of the time is waiting for the greenstuff to harden, so i can add another layer. It has been pretty fast progress other than that, until now where it is more detail work.

@Elazar: Thanks! Actually i might do a third thing altogether on his loin"cloth", by making it fur instead. Maybe that would fit the model better.

@Nightsword: Thanks! One foot is almost done now hehe. The gem is from a fishtank decoration, lol. I did blend the tusks in a bit more, i hope it looks better now.

I think i am dropping the armour idea again. I worked on the arm a bit more, and i think i nailed it this time by adding more muscle to the biceps, triceps and shoulder. The shape was wrong before.
Stay tuned for update, probably tonight... He is done soon (so just have to do 10 other trolls after that, Yaiks, hehe)

So here are the pictures... started doing the "horn-crown", i hope you like it, still needs some work. And the hands and feet still need work as well, they are a pain to do! Other than that, there isnt a long way to go, yay!

Thanks for looking, and do leave C&C!

Re: The Trolls are coming! - Scratchbuilding Throgg and his Trolls

I second Malika: I suggest to contact HiveTrygon (aka Troll Forged) so he can make casts from this beauty.

the sculpt is impressive, I like it a lot.

One little thing that I don't like, and, mind me, it is a really small details, is the belly button: it just is a hole in it's belly, while, with a little donut around it would be more detailed and realistic (if you can call a Troll realistic).

now that I think about it, are trolls mammels? I don't want to go off topic, but, do trolls actually have belly buttons? Now that I mentioned it, I would cover the belly button all in one, and add a scar on its belly.

    keep it up.

    cheers

I like the scuplt. Looks very nice. I think it would look better if you had the more mutated but thats just me. Can't wait to see the other trolls and whatever else your gonna have in here.

Re: The Trolls are coming! - Scratchbuilding Throgg and his Trolls

The troll forged troll has a belly button, so why not?! lol

You've nailed the face tusks. They look great now. Do the same with the other spines and you'll have nailed this. Great job. Really impressed.

Seriously, post it up on the Troll Forged Forums site. You don't have to get it cast, but there are some top sculptors and modellers there. I think it would be a while for you to get this cast, but if you ask nicely enough, I'm sure the ol' lovely gent on there will add you to the queue:

    Suitably impressive.

It's great and for you in case you change your mind a quick chainmail tutorial for other trolls. Hope you do not mind:
    step 1 cloth armature

step 2 sculpt cloth folds over armature

step 3 take your needle tool and press up and into the putty on the first row, then in and down on the second, like this:

    you end up with this:

I hope it helps, very simple way I just figured out and works much better than pokeing holes alone.

I really have to thank you for making this. It inspired me to go out and get the WoC rulebook and make a Troll Army. I just started a Tactica Thread in the Fantasy Tactics section. If it's okay with you, I'd like to put a link in the tactica to this b/c a lot of people are asking about what to use as the Troll King, and I think it's a really great model.

Re: The Trolls are coming! - Scratchbuilding Throgg and his Trolls

@Ikim: Thanks alot man. I really love your stuff as well! I will keep the belly button, but add the donut as you described to make it out a bit more.
I will see how he looks when he is done, and then consider wether i should try anything as ambitious as a cast.

@Dino: Thanks for the kind words! There are many different takes on chaos in general, and my opinion is that all chaos shouldnt necessarily be mutated (look at the marauders for example). I mean, aren't trolls weird enough as it is, chaos doesnt need to mutate them, hehe.

@Nightsword: I am glad you like the tusks now. All other spines still need quite alot of work, especially where they meet the body/head.
I will take a look at that other forum, thanks!

@HiveTrygon: Thanks for this turorial! Chainmail has always bothered me, and i never made it look alright. Maybe i can nail it now... Thanks alot

@GrandDukeJerot: I am happy that i have been inspirational to you and your trolls. I really love this part of the new warriors' book! Its so cool that you made a trolls tactica, i am going to follow it closely. And sure! Put op a link, i would be delighted!

Probably going to have some more pics later, after i have done some more work on him. Its really great to get all these nice replies, and now i can also see the end of him (and beginning of the lesser trolls). It really keeps me motivated!

Here's the link Troll King's Tactica. It's starting slow, but I think that's how all tacticas start. I'm Hoping to test leadbelchers in a Troll King list this weekend. IF they work out, I can make then as projectile vomiting trolls

Re: The Trolls are coming! - Scratchbuilding Throgg and his Trolls

    Hey all

@Mulrak: Thanks abunch! I am also waiting feverishly for the final result hehe!

@GrandDukeJerot: It looks really nice, the Troll tactica, and sounds cool with the vomiting trolls. On that note, what would people think about a troll in 'vomiting pose' with two fingers in his throat? I mean, they have to provoke the vomiting since they do it on command, right? lol

Well, here is the update for today, blended in the horn crown more, so it looks more like it is coming from inside his head. Did the same with the back and added som fur to the behind as well. Also some touch ups here and there and more work on the foot.
I mounted him to a normal 40x40mm monster base, so you can see what i am talking about when i say that he might be on the big side. Although his stats should excuse a bigger size i must admit that it is because of inexperience. I didnt expect him to grow as much as he did. Well... I know that for the next trolls

If there are other angles or close ups you would like, just say so and i can probably acommodate.

Re: The Trolls are coming! - Scratchbuilding Throgg and his Trolls

Great work, really good. And who cares if he's a little large? It's all that manflesh he's been eating, and will continue to eat. Would you say he's ready for painting, or do you have much more left to do to him?

If I may make a suggestion for the future, when you do your other trolls, just be careful of the legs and making them long enough. At certain angles, Throgg's look a little stumpy compared to his arm. At other angles (like the side), it looks fine and fantastic. Hope that's ok to say.

Really impressive and inspirational, you make me want to do my own

Re: The Trolls are coming! - Scratchbuilding Throgg and his Trolls

@Woody: Thanks! I too am a little bit surprised that he turned out this good, i hope he will end up even better.

@Nightsword: He not ready for painting yet. There are still some stuff to do, the feet and hands need more attention as well as the fur on the back side. But i sure can't wait to get him painted and also to start on the 'lesser' trolls.
I know that the legs are too short and also when i did the frame for his left leg (bent) i didnt take into account the thickness of the leg after modelling, so it looks weird. I hope i can improve this next time. And of course that is ok to say, if not how would i improve?

Is there anything anybody feels should be added to him? Some blingbling? Skulls (probably not going to do that even if you say so, dont like the way GW has "skulled things up" during the last years), chains? Anything like that? In the beginning i wanted to add alot of things like gladiator-like armour on the arms, but now i think i am going to leave him natural, just out of his cave.
Can anyone tell me how to make snow on the base? I really want to add snow (it says alot about how cold it is in troll country in the fluff, so there should be snow). None of the tests i have done so far are satisfying.
