Crimson Fists, starting out from scratch! (Upd. 05.01.09)

I've bought, assembled and undercoated a nice selection of models to paint. Now is the time to transform the black and lifeless army to a colourful and awesome one!

First off is a 10-model tactical squad. The The first model is completed, and the other nine have been basecoated and had the first armour highlights painted on, as well as basing. The full squad should be ready in a day or two.

Here's a couple of pics of my first ever Space Marine. Obviously, I'm not going to spend 10 hrs/model on the tactical squad marines, so the painting standard isn't brilliant, but I think it looks decent, and the full squad together will surely look even better.

The GW transfers that came with the box were a PITA to apply, so I have decided to freehand the chapter symbol on the models instead. I think that worked out quite well.

Smooth blue, strong red, nice freehand. Good job, especially for troops. Paint the whole army like that and it'll look great!

Just one thing, please please drill out that bolter! You can do the whole squad in 10 minutes and it looks so much better.
Like slack-jawed never Gnyaarg. Some then folks'll folks'll skunk, some. the but, again yokel eat a Cletus.

Thanks! Bolters will be drilled out when I get the drill set sometime this week. I can't stand the look of non-drilled weapons either

It's probably that it's a lot of direct light on the mini in those shots. They're a lot darker than the smufs, I can assure you. The main armour bits are necron abyss in the darkest places, then regal blue, then smurfblue edge highlights.

The freehand was actually very easy. I just tried it out a bit on some paper, and then went for it. A lot easier than I had feared.

    Update:

For some reason, I really got carried away on my dreadnought the other day. The tactical squad is nearing completion now, but this guy is done!

The parchment-thing on the front is still blank though. I'm not sure what to name him yet.

    I've done my first Rhino:

And I've added a magnetized dozer blade, just in case:

Full shot of everything so far:

I'm waiting for some more pigments to do additional weathering on the dreadnought and the rhino before I seal them off with a good spray of matt varnish.

I think I'm going to paint up the 2nd tactical squad next, just to be done with them. Then I'm going to add another rhino for that squad. Hopefully I can paint them up before January is over.
