    The Dude's Orks

Why oh why did GW release so many cool Ork minis? It forced me to get out my long forgotten Ork minis and sort them into two piles.

    1) For repainting

    2) For converting

Using the free Nob from White Dwarf as a test mini, I decided to follow my true dream of a Speed Freek army, and what better way of doing so than with the original speed freeks, the Evil Sunz?

So this is the test mini in all his glory:

As you can see, I haven't gone for the insane Red featured in the Codex, keeping it a little darker and much less prolific (you can't see it but his shirt is actually red).

As I scrimped and saved for the AoBR box, I started repainting a Mob of Shoota Boyz and an old metal Nob, failing to realise that Nobs in Boyz Mobs can't take TL Shootaz. No matter, I will eventually replace him with another AoBR Nob and shift this one to a Nobz Mob.

After getting the AoBR box, I used a Deffkopta as incentive to finish the Shoota Boyz mob. The Deffkopta also worked well for establishing my colour scheme for vehicles (of which I will need a few).

Then it was back to the grind, pumping out another 9 AoBR Slugga Boyz to accompany the test Nob.

Now that they are done, I am rewarding myself by converting an old Buggy to have newer Boyz (from the "for converting" pile). I also plan on affixing more plates and stuff to beef it up a wee bit and little jagged bits like are on the Deffkopta to tie that design in.

I'll post pics of that as it progresses.

If anyone's got any ideas on how best to update the vehicle crew, I'm all ears.

I like your colour choice too. My Evil Sunz are quite similar to yours. Cant wait to see how this develops.

Very nice orks! EWspecially the yellow markings are great! Just a small criticism: the metal on the kopta looks a bit dull. Did you highlight it?

Beautiful work and really great detailing. I like how you have the yellow out lined.

    Lovely stuffs indeed.

As for the trukk orks. Maybe put a box sort of barrier around them without the orks being visible, so nobody has to see them and it saves you some time.

Just a thought, but I have subscribed.

Yes- the darker toned red is richer. I like it better as well.

Another vote in support of the darker red.

Looking forward to army shots, they're sure to be excellent.

No, (well some bits) I wanted the metal to be duller, and dirtier, keeping the visual focus on the red, yellow and white.

Only when it's on metal. On red, it contrasts well enough, but on metal it tends to look like the edges are blurred. A bit of brown ink just makes the deliniation sharper without going too far with a harsh black outline like a cartoon.

Also, you can't really see it in the pic, but the boy with big shoota in the Slugga Boyz mob has three Dakka glyphs on his shoulder pad.

    DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA!!!

Quick update on the Buggy front.

Below is the work to date. Note the paint-job is from it's old life. I'm still picking through bits to find a left arm to suit and I'll need to do some Green Stuffing here and there, but you get the basic idea.

I was going to use the original gun mount, but now I'm thinking I'll stick a roll bar similar to the Trukk on there and mount the gun to that.

Below is an unfortunately out of focus shot of it with the plasticard front plate. You can't really see the detail, but it's got lots of scrappy bitz on it

I'm thinking I'll GS some of those metal plates on the wheels like all the other new vehicles have, just to keep consistency.

    More as it happens.

    Re: The Dude's Orks

More Buggy pics (in focus this time ).

You can see the rollbar and other arm I've added. I'll mount the gun on the rollbar. I also tidied up the goggles I had previously sculped on the gunners helmet, as they were really rough from the days when I first started working with putty.

Here it is with the front plate on. I'm starting to think it may be a bit OTT, and may leave it separate to stick on if I want to give it armour plates or something.

Started working on the gun too, but it will need a lot of work, as will any mount I make for it.

Feedback is welcome guys, I'm starting to lose my way a bit now.

I really like this matey, the fact you got the guns different is just orksome. Not OTT like I have done a few times with my orks and distinguishable enough to make it stand out. Very clean and crisp, I do like it a lot. So keep it up The Dude, you are givin' me a bit of inspiration to.

    Re: The Dude's Orks

I've changed the gun a wee bit since the last photos. I'm still ruminating on how to mount it though.

Last night I green stuffed some metal plates on the wheels to fit in with the Trukk, Bikes and Battlewagon. I only put 3 plates per wheel, as I felt it made it look a little more light weight than the Trukk wheels, which fits the fast Buggies more.

    Re: The Dude's Orks

    To mount it?

Just use a bit of frame/sprue and pin it. Allows you to take it out when destroyed and allow painting to be easier. It looks rather thin but it mounts it none the less.

    I eagerly await pictures though.

    Re: The Dude's Orks

I think I'm going to end up sculpting a hinge on the bottom of it connected to the roll bar. I've set it up so that it sits in the right position, so I'll sculpt the hinge on and try to keep the gun separate, because as you say, it will be easier to paint.

The gun is really the only thing I need to sort out now. Once that's done, it'll be plain sailing.

I'm thinking of entering this in the Dok Bucha's Konversion Kompetition this Christmas, depending on how it comes out.

Looks good so-far. Hard to tell from the pics but maybe the engine could have some different types of metal indicated, steel, brass, aluminum etc. and some wires? Just a thought.

    Re: The Dude's Orks

Undercoated the main buggy and front plate last night. Still waiting for the GS on the gun to cure and I'll be almost done. The gun looks way different now. I used the exhausts from 2 buggys as gun barrels (which look sweet) and dropped a plate on top with two ejection ports for spent shells.

    More pics soon.
