Barbarian Green Stuff Work In Progress

    Hello boys & girls!

this is my first scratch built sculpt and i want to share my progress on it and i want to hear your opinions about my sculpt.
Its not finished yet but will hopefully be soon. ^^ its gonna be a Muscle Mountain Barbarian inspired by this artwork by a guy called VegasMike over at DeviantArt.

    http://fc43.deviantart.com/fs14/f/20..._VegasMike.jpg

Heres the first stage of it. not much to look at.

Now we're getting somewhere, the boots and legs are finished, the boots we're a Blast to sculpt. And i've begun to flesh out the neck and shoulder area. ^^

Here ive started to flesh out the left arm and given him a sixpack to flex with. the neck muscle will be redone cuz it looks nothing like a muscle in this stage, more like some weird tyranid bit or something. not even that.

now we're closing in. Hes got some Loincloth to cover his manhood with now! i have also done some man boobs, roughly sculpted the left arm and hand (the hand was a real pain in the ass to sculpt since i've covered it with GS in previous stages, making the hand bulky and it looks weird). and ive given him a new neck. It might look unrealistic but ive used bodybuilders on steriods for reference and one of them looked like that (serously). plus i think it fits the character =P

Yo, huge admiration for anyone who can sculpt or even attempts there own scratch build.

Firstly, some advertising. Get yourself over to the Troll Forged Forum, it the home of the amatuer sculptor. Huge huge sculpting community is growing there, and they are exceptionally friendly and fairly fresh to the whole sculpting things themselves. You can learn alot I'm sure, and they happily dish out the advice and information. (Just so you know, the latest members include 2 first time scratch builders too).

@ nightsword Thanx for the hint, ill Check it out imidatley!

    I have more progress photos!

Now ive given him a Right Arm too. though its bigger than the Left one, i will have to do somehting about it. And hes got a head! i suck at sculpting heads and i wanted to save some GS so i cheated a little and gave him a skull as head, im gonna have to do something about that back. it looks too messy.

ive lowered his right arm and given him a hood. that was a real bitch to sculpt. i have finaly fleshed out his left arm so it now matches the right one a bit more. i have also begun to smooth out the back. i will add eyes at some stage so it wont look too skull like. i think i will make his lower back a bit broader, just a little cuz it looks kinda weird as it is now.

ive made a stamp for the heads that the barbarian is gonna hold in his left hand by the hair, its made from a skull and a zombie from GW. i have also done the axe that i will attach once its finished. i have noticed how hard it is to sculpt weapons with Green stuff now, i dont have any plasticard so i have to take what i have. but i have found a technique that fits my purpose when it comes to sculpting the Axe Head. I make a roughly shaped axehead and then i scrape and carve it so it will resemble Stone or Cold hammered iron but it doesnt show very well in this picture, plus ive not come to that stage in the process yet, it needs to cure first. i will probably post a close up pic of it once its done. This is the third time ive Redone that axe. First time the axe head was too small and there were leather straps that was too thick so i removed them completley. the axe is about as high as the barbarian, pretty big. ^^
The rope wasn't too fun to sculpt either, it got kinda messed up.
If anyone have a good tip on how to sculpt rope they are most welcome!

i have bulked out the latissimus dorsi so it now sticks to his pelvic. and ive added some side abs. The tapetzius muscle is toned down now but still a little uneven. i have fixed it in the upcoming update!

there, now i have added more muscle to his back! it should be a little bit more interestning to look at not. it was too plain before imo. i will add some shallow bloodveins to his arms and maybe his legs too, to give him some more details. ^^

    Constructive critizism is highly apriciated!

Simply amazing. I recently picked up sculpting as well, though for your first go, it looks great. Your fur does look a bit.......messy, although that could just be the pics.

You say latissimus dorsi, I say tenderloin (cook for a living)

    Update!

there, now i have added the axe. i had to resculpt the biceps and lower arm to be able to attach the axe so it will look belivable. the axe is insanley big. just the way its supposed to be ^^ i hope my rig will hold until its cured. i will work alot more on the arm, i need to make fingers and stuff. its far from finished. and i have made a face. i added a lower lip, nose and eyes. now i think it has qiute a sad look on its face, maybe too sad. though i think it looks kinda like hes more a force of nature with that serene face or something. like the Barbarians in D&D, one with nature and stuff.

I have decided i wont have those heads in his right hand as it will probably look too unbalanced and weird. so now i have spare heads. yay!

i have started to think of what mini i should do next, and im considering to do a female barbarian. or a wizard, overall it will probably be a female sculpt. i have never sculpted anything remotley female before. i will probalby use the Diablo III concept art as reference for those sculpts since they are soo awesome. either that or a Skaven Assassin maybe ^^ that would be cool too

    Update! ;D

whats left to do: beef up the under arm and maybe fix the hand, Im not particulary fond of the new hand but im not sure if i an do it better. im not sure if i should make some changes to the face. maybe make his nosebone a little bigger, and shrink his lower lip, it looks like he is pouting right now, and ive never seen a Barbarian Pout! maybe i will improve the ropes on the axe but im not sure, if i would keep doing touch ups on this guy i would never finish it.

im thinking of making him very gritty, bloodstains on his face an chest maybe. along with a very dirty appearance overall. and have a lot of browns. im a horrible painter imo so i wont promise anything good. im a bit scared that i will fail utterly on the paintjob but hopefully i will manage

Dont worry, just paint. You can allways go back and repaint if needed.

Love your work. You've got a unique style that's very appealing. For starters it looks like you're not doing the heroic scale giant heads and hands which are just plain goofy to me. Great work. Can't wait to see that assassin finished!

Thank you! i try to keep the proportions as realistic as possible. at least on these models. i hate the feet on the standard skaven infantry units. they look like duck feet with five toes or something. i want to avoid that. hopefully i will get this one cast once its finished.

I need to decide what weapon he will have. It will be some form of Martial arts Weapon. do you have any ideas or suggestions? no swords or clubs though. it will either be a Rat Claw (or Tiger Claw as they are called, but in Children of the Horned Rat Supplement they're called Rat Claws =P ), a pair Katars or Sai's.

    Tiger Claw

    Katars of different design

    Sai

I imagine the Katars Would be eaisiest to sculpt. i could vary the amount of blades, it could have three, one big in the middle and two smaller ones on each side. maybe i could do a Katar Design like the Tiger claw. with the blades turned 90 degrees like the tiger claw. if you know what i mean? do you guys have any suggestions?

    FUUUUUR!!!

Now ive added fur and a jaw. And ive figured out i cant do detail work while listening to Motörhead. great band but i cant work cuz i get too much into the music so my workingspeed gets higher than i can handle! (Ace of Spades you know!) So i had to put on some Type o Negative instead. slower and better to work to if your doing details like these. ^^

holy COW!!! these sculpts look fantastic, love the skaven assassin. I believe you should go for the Katar design shaped in the way as the tiger claws. keep up the good work.

I think either the Tiger (rat) claws or the Katar would be cool. Lucky thing you weren't sculpting to slayer, your model probably would be in shreds at this point
