YAY! Pre Heresy Sallies are an awesome scheme. The darker colours suit them IMO although be careful not to make them too dark.

BTW What are you using as reference for the scheme as the Australian GW site still has the pre-heresy coulour schemes for a lot of the chapters if you were curious?

Here begins my delving into a proper Pre-heresy contingent (and other distractions). My previous marines were Dusk Raiders which pre-date the Great Crusade and as such I don't embrace for campaigns/events of the PH nature.



I wanted a proper Crusade era legion to sit aside from the Raiders and after much fiddling (Word Bearers, Iron Hands, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, World Eaters .. ;/.) I settled upon the drakes of Nocturne, Legio XVIII, the Salamanders.

Colour testing ahoy! I settled on a simple Knarlock Green base coat, followed by a wash of Devlan Mud. Re-apply Knarloc and then highlight the edges with 1:1 Knarloc/Goblin green mix. These chaps are at stage 2.



The 4/5 pictures in Collected Visions. They seem to be the entirety of PH imagery for the Salamanders sadly. I will be throwing in some gold trimmings where apparent.

Welcome to the Crusade brother, this should be an interesting log. Consider me subscribed as I am doing a Pre-Heresy Ultramarines army and am interested to see how others are doing their Pre-Heresy armies. On a personal note I would say that they could possibly do with being a bit darker on the green armour as they look a little pale. Any ideas on what size a force you will be doing??

I thought it was too dark - those above have just been washed, so not had a layer of Knarloc yet.

Here was the prototype. End highlights were in Goblin green, which is too far off, so will redo that with the mix mentioned.

My concern is the cloak. It's lizard scale, but I can't help think painting it green is going to be a bit bland.

Having never seen a pre-heresy Salamanders force, this should be quite interesting. Not to mention awesome so far.

Some advice for the cloak, you could do it light greens and yellows or reds. Maybe even greys.

No. That's a campaign camouflage scheme (or retconned job) from Rogue Trader - post heresy. Badab War to be specific.


Having posted that picture, I'm quite happy with that metallic yellow included. It's damn near close to my Fuegan!

I like the abundance of flames and yellow/metallic yellow sections on the armour. That should break the monotomy a fair bit - especially the vet. sergeant's extra plates.

I found a good 5 pictures - all were green with yellow/gold trimmings and black pads.
