Re: The Lost and the Damned

Glad to see you're back in action, Feral!
I don't hang around here much anymore because of real life problems, but seeing your work always helps improve my mood

Traitor Guardsmen - great weathering/damage effects on the armour and the shading also looks real nice.

Possessed - I like the poses (and paintjob of course). I thought my LatD were complete, but those models are really tempting... Alpha Legion colours look really good on them.

Mutant - You're particularly good at these guys. Very Cthulhuesque.

Lord - looks suitably battle-scarred and menacing. Nice detail with the wing. The lords I've seen (not that many come to think of it - they're kinda scarce compared to Sorcerers and DPs) are usually waving weapons around and screaming warcries, but this guy's pose seems a much better fit for the Alpha Legion.

I see your skills have been noticed by the Chaos gods, who have granted you a Chaotic painting desk familiar.

Smile Re: The Lost and the Damned

    Woo comments!

Monsterzonk,T_55, tinfoil and W0lf, thank you!

    For Simo429;

    Traitor armour
    - Basecoat Charadon Granite
    - Stipple Blood Red
    - Stipple Charadon around edges
    - Highlight previous stage with Boltgun Metal

    Good luck with the army!

    For Vinsanity;

    Alpha Legion armour
    - Basecoat Fenris Grey
    - Highlight around edges with watered-down Hawk Turquoise*
    - Highlight Hawk Turquoise
    - Highlight Goblin Green

*rather important, as it needs to blend in with the basecoat

Acerbus, I noticed that the particular head I used does have a lot of deeply moulded detail compared to the bare heads on the standard CSM sprue (an obvious sign of GW's plastics technology improving). I think it took about three attempts to get it right because what I've done before didn't work so well on such a detailed piece. However, a light glaze of some grey colour helped to achieve what effect I wanted.

Supremearchmarshal, welcome back to the fold, good to hear of some old faces. Thanks for the good words, I assume when you mention a familiar you're referring to my cat?

    - - - - - - - - - -

What else was I going to say? Oh yes, I've set myself a challenge!

Basically, it's about 5 weeks to the Open Bash so I've set myself the task of getting this first 1500 points done by the end of the month. It's going to be an epic task even with the glorious week off I have soon.

However, if I do get this done I judged I'd have sufficient time to add an Apocalypse formation or two to jack the points up to 3000 points. (I'm thinking a Red Corsair Doombringer Annihilation Force and maybe a Chaos Baneblade too?) Basically, lots of encouragement please if you want to see these (and I bet you all do too!)

    - - - - - - - - - -

Anyway, this post being all words and no updates is kinda bad so I'll see if I can get some proper photos of the Traitors I have sometime.

    Till next time kids!

Re: The Lost and the Damned

I was actually referring to the paint desk itself, which looks suitably chaotic

Doombringer Annihilation Force is the one with lots of Termies, right? With their teleport ability it does sound like the tactics the Red Corsairs would employ. Oh, and seeing your Lord I think they'd look great in your army.

Baneblade? Yeah, I think a big tank would be a nice centerpiece for the army. Though of course the other big tanks would also fit the bill (such as the Macharius, Malcador, or my favourite: http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/acatalog/shadowsw8store.jpg)

Ooh, I didn't know you have a cat.

Re: The Lost and the Damned

    Back again people!

Supremearchmarshal, now I get you. I swear sometime the thing shuffles a bit by itself.

Yes, superheavies.... (thanks for the suggestions BTW). I'm staying off the Forge World goodness until I've got everything on my plate done so to speak. All I saying is after the new Imperial Guard Codex is out I'll have the chance to expand the army into two (the Alpha Legion elements hitting in at just under 1000 points by itself) and then, hello CRM!

gonzosbignose, thanks for the encouraging praise, I'm a fan of your Orks as well.

    - - - - - - - - - -

As I said last time I would get some photos of currently painted things up, here's a good cross-representation of the state of things Renegade:

    Infantry:
(Currently 20 painted and 10 more in the works to bolster the main squads to 15)

    Autocannon:

Hopefully, these photos will reveal some of the little details I like to paint on, such as the checker patterns (kill markings) and single Chaos arrow (to represent their path to "liberation")

    - - - - - - - - - -

*EDIT* - (I completely forgot to mention what I'm actually up to now!)
I have a week off starting in several days time, so I'll give you a low-down of what I want to get done in that time:

    To finish painting (~75% done):
    ~ 10 Renegades
~ Renegade Leman Russ Battle Tank

    Ready for undercoating:
    ~ 10 Alpha Legion CSM
    ~ 10 The Purge CSM
    ~ Alpha Legion Defiler

    A bit more modelling needed:
    ~ 14 Nurglesque Mutants

    - - - - - - - - - -

Now I've hit you with pictures and talked of things to come I can blather on a bit more about the thought process behind the force (more specifically the Renegades).

I only recently got around to getting my hands on the 40K rulebook as well as the Apocalypse expansion. Now before you all say "well about time", I found a really interesting nugget of information on page 171 of the latter book about the Alpha Legion manipulating disgruntled Loyalist guardsmen into outright rebellion without the whole "WOOCHAOSSPIKESANDTENTACLESEVERYWHERE" thing. (reference - Roek Ghulclaw and the Guns of Freedom)

I think that's the direction I wanted to go in with my Renegades right from the start, blindly and naively following in the name of "liberation".

Leaving on that, I await all your nice comments.

Re: The Lost and the Damned

Nice job so far here. The guardsmen look good, though I think you should go that extra mile and add some masks to the faces or icons to the helmets/shoulder pads. You have the skills to so why not use them?

The alpha legion are particularly nice, were they Migsula inspired? I wouldn't blame you if they were, I think there are going to be a lot of Alpha Legion popping up real soon!

The highlighting on the armour of the marines looks great, very clean and striking, keep up the good work.

    Cheers,

    Dante

Re: The Lost and the Damned

I swear to god that I faced this army, albeit a 750 list, twice. Once at a GW local in melbourne and then again at a tournament in melbourne in 2006. Conflict Melbourne I think it was. Imperial Guard v Traitor Guard on a capture 1/4 battle.
    Could be mistaken.

    Nope clearly mistaken, carry on.

Re: The Lost and the Damned

    Back again with another update!

Lu&Pu, hello again! The Red Corsairs have been split up and used for various things; Huron is slowly getting a re-paint, the 5-man squad are going to be changed to Alpha Legion Raptors and the Lord lies in bits until I can decide what to do with him.

ps. If I ever find somewhere local that sells plasticard I'll redo that Chimera, OK?

CMDante, thanks for dropping by! As for your suggestions, I will try to incorporate those later on in the project. I plan to have a variety of miniatures and conversions in my Traitor Guard army, giving each "faction" as it were a little bit of fluff as to who they were, how they fell to Chaos and what their agendas and plans are. It's quite hard to explain, but it'll make sense in time I hope.

MasterPuppets, that wan't me, but that person certainly has good taste in 40K armies!

    - - - - - - - - - -

I've slowly started working on the next part of my Alpha Legion, so here's the first two members of the ten-man squad:

    Aspiring Champion:

(I used a helmet from the Chaos Terminator Lord sprue, because I think it looks awesome!)

    Meltagunner 1:

I've also decided to dig up my old Epic stuff, and paint up a small Alpha legion army to go alongside their 28mm brethren.

    Infantry Stand:

(I actually have four of these painted so far, but the accursed camera refused to take a decent picture of them altogether. Oh well, four down, eight more (plus four Havoc stands) to go for now)

    - - - - - - - - - -

On other news, I've got some of the new Imperial Guard stuff winging my way with my preorder, as well as some Inquisitor stuff (ooh eer fancy ).

That, and I've started to basecoat a Defiler. Good times. B)

    Keepin' it sneaky like :P

Great looking Alpha Legion. They have that war-battered look that is signature Mr. Feral. Very authentic. Very atmospheric.

Those Alpha's are looking really really good mate, the green highlights blend well with the blue to produce a really cool effect.

    Keep up the good work!

Well Feral okay and since I only want to help take a little tour through this shop here, maybe there is one near you.

Well sad for the corsairs but your alphas are looking ace to if in deed they aren´t looking better. ;-) Well we all improve and sometimes we redo old things, I see, I´m doing equal. ^^

With the Guard codex out really soon, what will you use for your traitors? Guard codex or special list from IA books?

Thanks for the nice comments everyone!

Lu&Pu, I shall be using the new Codex especially because all the nifty little bonuses infantry can get.

    - - - - - - - - - -

Anywho a nice short update, I received my Imperial Guard goodies a week or so back so I've been busy assembling my Platoon Command and my first Armoured Sentinel too.

Hey look, something new painted too!

*EDIT* - Better picture on next page!

Sometime down the line I'm going to be adding another platoon, only this time using the Forge World Chaos kits and go all out on some Special Character count-as

Re: The Lost and the Damned

That model looks pretty cool, is it one of the new guard models, and did you convert it? Anyway, I think it fits right in with your traitor grunts.

The new IG codex also gives you a great way to represent mutants or fanatics - Penal Legionnaires.

Oh, and the Armoured Sentinels are good for Stalk Tanks, if you ever decide to get some of those.
