Thread: What's up with White Dwarf?

    What's up with White Dwarf?

First of all - good to see the (if only a temporary) portent forums up again. I had withdrawals from being away from my favorite 40k community.

Anyways...what's up with when White Dwarf comes out? I mean, I have a subscription. But regardless, someone is always getting it a week before me. Not that its a jealousy thing, but I just get frustrated that people talk for a week or two about an article in it and I can't refer to what they're talking about. And by the time I get my copy, the topic is old.

I assume that UK White Dwarf is on a different schedule than the US one. But on message boards, I'm constantly reading (about a week before I get mine sometimes two), "Hey, just got the new US White Dwarf and the article about blah blah blah....."

I'm like, "What the?" Okay, I should get mine either today or tomorrow then. Nope.....a week goes by before I get mine. Sometimes two. So again I ask "what's up with White Dwarf?"

Are there certain people that get a special preview subscription or something? Or is the magazine itself just distributed in a weird staggered release way? East coast gets it a week before west coast? I don't know...I'm scratching my head on this.

I should have got mine today. Ah, well I just have to wait until monday then.

WD review thread, here I come!

Edit: To be a little more helpful. I think that the US Mail classified the WD as a catalogue, so it has a low priority delivery status and is generally delivered last of all the stuff the post offices get. Variations in the amount of mail in different areas affects when you get the WD in your mail. (That is, if you are in the US.)

Will the all-Gnoblar army be featured in the UK Dwarf? I know it's in the latest US one (303) but I can't get my hands on that...

Left mine at the GW, so I can't check...

Anyway, even though US people get their's before we do, that doesn't mean they have the same content. Sometimes they get stuff a little earlier, sometimes we do. And sometimes things never cross over the ocean. Don't worry over it, getting info earlier doesn't mean that much, does it?

Well if it makes you feel any better I am in Vancouver British Columbia and I think I am about as far away as you can get to a White Dwarf Publishing centre. I tend to receive mine about three weeks after they are out in stores.

The mail order trolls use the post office as an excuse. Had to call twice before I was sent Issue 300 (and it arrived in late February) because it required a special postage rate.

I buy mine in the store and I still happen to get it before many people with subsricptions do. I really havn't found a reason to buy a subscription.

Who are "we" in your above post?

Getting info earlier doesn't mean that much to me. No.

But several other factors are a part of my discomfort with the WD subscription. I use the word "discomfort" because its not as harsh a word as "frustration". I don't check the mail box and yell, "Damn it all to heck! Where's my White Dwarf!" But the inconsistencies are a source of some annoyance.

It doesn't matter to me if UK White Dwarf is different than US. Or if it comes earlier or later. (although, I don't see the point of making two different White Dwarves with different content) What does matter to me (like I said in my original post)....is when someone in the U.S. gets their copy a week before me. I am a U.S. citizen with a U.S. White Dwarf subscription. Shouldn't I be getting mine at the same time as that other guy?

I also don't like relying on just waiting for the local GW shop to get an issue in because sometimes they get theirs very late too. Which is the oddest thing. You'd think that a GW store would definitely get their copy in on time everytime eh?

Anyways, still think its odd that WD comes in at odd times. I mean, my copy of Premiere magazine comes at the same time as my other friend that has the same copy in New York. I'm in LA.

*still scratching my head over this*

WD is wierd with it's delivery times. Sometimes you get it a week or two in advance, sometimes you get it a week or two after. I don't know how or why, I just go with it.

You do know it's not actually due until the end of this week, right? It's meant to arrive on the last Friday of each month, and last friday was the 18th. It should arrive this friday coming up, the 25th of March.

UK subscriber copies usually arrive a week before the shop release date. Mine arrived this morning, Monday 21st.

I got fed up with GW's WD mailing proceedure several years ago. That and my subscription was "lost" when they switched to a new company PC at GW, USA. I had 11 issues left before my last year was up.

Anyway, WD (USA's) was mailed out at a magazine rate, it moved along with OR right after, First Class flats (large envelopes magazine size. Then GW had it's magazine reduced to the catalog rate (way to much like a catalog). GW saved lots of money on mailing/Postal rates.

I talked to a US printer that printed up the White Dwarfs. They shipped them to GW from the printing plant/location. GW mailed them out (on the day they shipped to stores). Since GW only paid catalog mailing prices, the darn mags moved s.l.o.w.e.r. thru the US Mails. (1st class, 2nd then catalogs/bulk rate)

Naturally, you can get WDs at GW's own stores before anywhere else.

In the USA, most people who subscribe to magazines do it to save money (per issue), save a trip to the newstand/store and to get the magazines BEFORE they arrive at stores etc. Naturally GW thinks, they are "special", no need to treat their subscribers like other magazines (USA) do.

MO screwed up my re-subscription last year and I missed two issues which after I had a moan to the 'hobby specialists' about. I got 12 months subscription plus an extra 2 months added on free for the hassle.

As a rule I get mine a week before it hits the shops. When I called into Lenton I've been able to read a staff copy up to 2 weeks before the UK stores get it.

I remember back in the day you got rewarded for taking a subscription, namely through a free blister/box up to the value of an eldar Shrieker jetbike. Now you pay the same price (only rounding up the five cents, so its actually 60 cents more expensive) and get a random release date that could vary between being early or drastically late. If only we could have the old, loving GW, if I had to have 40k 2nd ed models for that to happen, so be it.
