The Anchorage Annexation an Aeronautica Imperialis campaign

This is a log to track the fortunes of the various forces involved in the Anchorage Annexation a campaign waged in the Antona Australis system, the PCRC's personal little sector of the 40k galaxy.

Anchorage is historically a neutral area of the sector, but recent colonisation by the tau has unbalanced the region, and an Imperial taskforce has been sent to ensure the 'filthy blueskins' can't gain a firm foothold. Needless to say, this has stirred up a hornet's nest of xeno traders, mercenaries and various unsavoury characters, including orks and eldar!

Our gaming group has just bought some Aeronautica Imperialis models and the rules, and we're frantically painting stuff up for the initial skirmishes. As a result, the Anchorage Annexation will mainly be fought in the skies of the various moons of the principal planet, though doubtless we'll get stuck into some ground war when it comes to capturing cities...

    +++
    Overview of the System
Lying in a neutral zone contested by Imperial forces but fostered by the other principal species, the star system Anchorage contains only one world, M-M-12-12, orbitting a bright white star named Anchorage Prime. A cross-section of M-M-12-12 is shown in the accompanying pict-capture, demonstrating the various layers of atmosphere. The moon of Old Sleet is visible as a dark spot to the lower left.

Devoid of any useful materials or minerals, M-M-12-12 is officially classified as a Dead World. It does support temporary inhabitants, but the lack of a breathable atmosphere and any resources means that the new settlements rarely last long.

However, the large planet does support a number of viable satellites: three natural moons (Merryweather, Monstrous and Old Sleet) and the orbital trading city of Venn'Tradi.

Merryweather is so called owing to its lush grasslands and temperate climate. A true paradise world, Merryweather has many settlements from numerous species, and its mercenary forces (paid in time allowance on the surface) have long resisted any subsumation into any permanent empire.

Monstrous is the largest moon, and possesses a similar climate. However, plasma and ion storms frequently wrack the moon, and have reduced many areas to ash wastes. There are many settlements here, including ork, human (Imperial and non-Imperial) and tau. Rumours even abound of eldar artefacts on the surface. A dense population means that there are numerous cities dotted across the surface, and at least two sub-hive category conurbations Swathe Ling and Wood's Port.

Old Sleet is a dismal, seleostationary satellite that always lurks in M-M-12-12's shadow, receiving no light from the nearby sun. Naturally a desert world of pallid sand, refractory mirrors placed in orbit by earth caste engineers are being combined with the moon's natural heavy rainfall to promote biodome plant growth.

Recently colonised by the tau, there are numerous reports of sub-atmospheric conflicts with orks and other piractical raiders. These have escalated sharply since the colonisation began.

Venn'Tradi is open to all races that can reach M-M-12-12, and forms a nominally neutral meeting place for all the species of the sector under the auspices of its builders, the Brightsword Protectorate. It has been the location for at least seven minor space battles including the loss of the Ff'fell Ff'fell, Kor'O Galli'Free's flagship.

Venn'Tradi is hugely important to Tau morale in the sector, and Taskforce Warhound has it in its sights. Of course, Kor'O Galli'Free has no intention of losing a second encounter with the Imperials, and has reinforced his air and naval forces considerably.

In any case that's no moon it's a fully operational battlestation!

The Manassas Crisis marks the first full-scale battle.

Re: The Anchorage Annexation an Aeronautica Imperialis campaign

...and to kick us off, here's my Imperial Navy Wing!

    The Starfire Skybears
The Skybears are officially known as the 516th/18th Squadron of the Antona Australis Sector fleet; being a battlefield amalgamation of the badly-mauled 744th and 18th, along with the ground support from the annihilated 514th squadron.

A mix of grizzled veterans and green recruits, the Skybears are led into battle by Sky-Captain T'Moro in his distinctive Thunderbolt, Dragonfly.

The current operational strength of the squadron is:
    Flight squadron Bedlam:
    Four Thunderbolt Fighters
    Dragonfly piloted by Sky-Captian T'Moro;
    Moribund Flight-Lieutenant Herzog;
    Glory Be! Flight-Lieutenant Do Long,
    Damascus Flight-Officer Maher

    Flight squadron Babel:
    Four Vulture Gunships
King Bear piloted by Captain Marwell
    Sweet Marcy Flight-Lieutenant Ishmael
    Vexator Flight-Officer Gearheart
    Loose Cannon Flight-Officer Stilton

    Flight squadron Uproar:
One Marauder Bomber and one Marauder Destroyer
    Liberator piloted by Captain Harris
    Mad Dog Captain Dietz-Armstrong

The Wing is currently attached to Taskforce: Warhound, and operational across the moon of Monstrous.

Here's a WIP Marauder Bomber: Mad Dog

...and Mad Dog in formation with Babel squadron.

    All very WIP!

Re: The Anchorage Annexation an Aeronautica Imperialis campaign

Haha, nice start Apologist. Simple yet very effective scheme and recipe.

The first of the Skybears opponents appear in the form of 'Da Silva Teef Vulturez' led by the mysterious and enigmatic Ork pirate known only as 'Da Green Barron'.

Da Silva Teef Vulturez and Da Green Barron
Da Green Barron is the leader of a piratical Ork air force known as Da Silva Teef Vultures. Da Silva Teef harass Imperial, Tau and Eldar supply lines, striking from an as yet undiscovered hidden base of operations. Da Silva Teef have been seen operating in several systems throughout the Antona Australis sector, a feat attributed to the spaceborne capabiltiies of their aircraft, an 'enhancement' thought up by the sqwadrons mekboy, although they have never been seen to attack the same target twice.

No motives or logic to Da Barrons attacks have been discerned, although as an Ork, there need be none other than good fightin'. Rumours abound, however, from those few survivors of Da Barrons attacks, that he orders all prisoners kept alive for interrogation, submitting them to a cruel torture, whilst demanding to know the location of his missing Amelia Orkheart.

The success of Da Barrons attacks has meant he has become hugely wealthy, yet he rarely keeps his wealth, instead seeming to plow it all back into the purchase of more aircraft and Orks to follow him, resulting in an increasing number of attacks across the sector. The large pay packet and promise of extra looted booty has attracted many Orks to Da Barrons fleet, including most recently the reknowned Luckee Aces sqwadron, who deserted Waaaaghh Bighead for fame and glory with Da Vulturez. Warboss Bighead is reportedly not very happy about this and has set a bounty out for Da Barrons head.

    Modelling:
Here are the first elements of the vultures. Firstly, 9 fighta-bommaz cribbed from my epic Ork army; Waaaaghhh Bighed - The 'luckee aces' squadron. I will be using these as Ork fightas in Aeronautica Imperialis

In addition to the luckee aces, here we have some scratchbuilt fighta-bommaz made from plasticard and based on the forgeworld design:

Finally, Some shots of the scratch built Ork Bommaz I have made from balsa and plasticard.

I based these off the photos on the FW website, but they are huge honking things compared to the epic fightas. Here is a comparison shot:

Re: The Anchorage Annexation an Aeronautica Imperialis campaign

The campaign kicked off this weekend, with two battles. The PCRC managed to dig out loads of old Epic-scale scenery, so we had a great cityfight table to represent Manassas City being fought over, resulting in an Imperial Victory; and a dawn raid on the orky buildings in the desert, resulting in an Ork victory.

The FW aircraft are such lovely models, and really quick to paint, too!

The Mannassas Crisis marked the first battle of the War on Monstrous.

Reports from an Arvus shuttle flight that came under attack in the Gossamer Park region of Mannassas City caused Imperial forces to scramble and engage, despite being unaware of the enemy's size and capabilities.

A force of four Vultures (Babel Squadron) and a Marauder Destroyer (Madhouse) were diverted from a nearby Skybear airbase to investigate, and ran into a sizeable force of Ork aircraft a mix of fightas and fighta-bombers.

While Captain Marwell led three of the Vultures to the north-east, the remaining Vulture, Loose Cannon, flew interference for the Marauder, hoping to split the orks in two.

Unfortunately, displaying the customary savagery of their species, the orks leapt towards Loose Cannon and Madhouse, downing the Vulture and damaging the Destroyer for no casualties. Desperately executing a power dive to escape the pursuing orks, Madhouse pulled towards the north-east.

With blood in their nostrils, the orks pursued, only to be faced by the remainder of Babel Squadron, who emerged from behind the Administratum Block to blow four of the ramshackle craft from the sky, forcing them to disengage, and ending the battle in victory for the Imperium.

    +++

A retaliatory strike against the orks involved a dawn raid the next day with the Vultures refuelled and rearmed, Babel and Uproar squadron pushed into the hinterlands of the ork-held desert.

They were swiftly forced to disengage by a ferocious defence by the orks; which resulted in two more Vultures being blown from the sky, including King Bear, piloted by the heroic Captain Marwell. His fate is presently unknown...

    +++

Looks like we've got some plothooks to get a rescue mission lined up for Captain Marwell.

Re: The Anchorage Annexation an Aeronautica Imperialis campaign

    Curse their blurriness!

    Babel Squadron

At the beginning of the campaign, Flight squadron Babel consisted of Four Vulture Gunships
King Bear piloted by Captain Marwell
    Sweet Marcy Flight-Lieutenant Ishmael
    Vexator Flight-Officer Gearheart
    Loose Cannon Flight-Officer Stilton

Stilton was killed in action during the Manassas Crisis, and Ishmael was assigned to a permanent desk job, having lost both legs and his right arm in the destruction of Sweet Patootie.

Babel was brought up to strength for the Dawn Raid over Orktown, and the listing ran so:
King Bear piloted by Captain Marwell
    Vexator Flight-Lieutenant Gearheart
    Parsley PrideFlight-Officer Tonberry
    Big BlueFlight-Officer Lo Meng

Parsley Pride was blown out of the sky with no survivors, and King Bear was also downed. A rescue mission undertaken by the Lamb's World LV is being mobilised to resuce Captain Marwell.

    Captain Marwell
A native of Grovsenor 6, Marwell entered the flight academy and joined the Imperial Navy. He enjoyed an unspectacular career that included the Gehenna Trials and Mellissan Secession, finishing the campaign as a Sky-Captain.

Seconded to the newly-formed Babel Squadron, Marwell took lead flight in
King Bear, and chalked up three kills before being downed in ork-held desert on Monstrous in the Anchorage Annexation.

He is currently Missing in Action.

    Mission 1
Play the AI Invasion scenario to land troops.
Imperial Victory: Enough Troops landed to mount rescue, play mission 2A.
Ork Victory: Imperials fail to land enough Troops, captive executed, play mission 2B.

    ---

    Mission 2A
Play 40k Rescue scenario to extract pilot.
Imperial Victory: Pilot makes it to LZ, play mission 3A.
Ork Victory: Pilot killed, play mission 3B.

    Mission 2B
Play 40k Recon scenario to confirm death of pilot.
Imperial Victory: Pilot death confirmed, play mission 3C.
Ork Victory: Status of pilot cannot be confirmed, operation abandoned, play mission 3D.

    Mission 3D
Play Bombing Run scenario to end this debacle once and for all.
Imperial victory: See Outcome 4 below.
Ork victory: See Outcome 5 below.

    ---

    Outcome 1
The pilot was successfully rescued with minimum casualties, and even made it home in time for tea and medals. Good job!
    Imperial Major Victory!

    Outcome 2
The pilot was rescued but casualties were heavy. I hope he was worth it...
    Imperial Minor Victory.

    Outcome 3
The Orks didn't hold onto the pilot for long enough to get any information from him, but he died along with most of his rescuers. However his body was evacuated and a lot of Orks were killed in the process. No-one can claim victory this day.
    Draw

    Outcome 4
The Orks held on to the pilot long enough to get some useful information from him and give the Imperials a bloody nose, but their base in Orktown took a pasting in the process
    Ork Minor Victory.

    Outcome 5
The pilot sang like a Kroot-hawk and his rescuers were given a taste of zoggin' boot-leather. Grog and medals all round!
    Ork Major Victory!
