My take on the Leman Russ (now with tutorial)

Hey all, my first post in this part of the forum.

I would just like some comments on my modified Leman Russes.

I was looking at my Russes the other day, and realized they look really crap. ^^
My ork vehicles look way more realistic, and thats not good enough for me.

After some drawing and planning, I started working and came up with this.

I raised the sides abit, to give the impression of some sort of suspension.

And also new turrets, just plasticard over the old turrets. And some greenstuff at the battlecannon muzzles to lower the caliber abit.

    So, what say you? Good/bad/could-be-better?

Very nice Russ, the turret is the obvious change and looks better for it.

I really like these a lot....but... My only thought now is that the treads seem too narrow now. Maybe LR tracks for a little extra width?

Again though, I like those beefed up turrets a lot and I look forward to some pics of the 3rd build in progress!

Great work, I love that enlarged turret. Reminds me of an Abrams tank.

Those figures are also great, whats the name of the company again that produces them? Pig Iron isnt it?

Nice work, I agree that the tracks could do with widening now haha! Well done tho, nice lil additions of tank riders and weathering, me like.

The mud is just paint. I start with a very light brown/yellow, drybruching it all over where the tank might get dirty, then I use darker and darker shades of brown, and go from drybryshing to dabbing on the paint. The further down I go, the darker the paint, since wet mud looks darker than dry.

I could show a quick guide when I get to that with my next Leman, but to be honest, I have seen some pretty awesome guides on the web already.

yeah, they do look abit on the thin side, but im not made of money. :P
I just use whats included in the boxed set and some plasticard.
But yeah, maybe I could try casting up some tracks, but thats a later project.

The heads are from Pig Iron, but all the bodies are GW models.

When im done with the next Leman project I´ll change this thread into a log for my Traitor guards, so I can show of all my dudes.
(Turns out I made a different log instead, which can be found here.)

Oh, and thanks for all the compliments!

Looks impressive...And fit the new Lumbering movement capability. I'm curious about the looking with a longer barrel gun. Good point to follow if I decide it to make my own variants.

Har, I'm planning on doing something like that for my russes. And now I know that the partally exposed road wheels don't make it look too tall!

it reminds me of the terradynes in Ground Control 2...one painted in NSA colors would be possibly the best IG tank ever made. EVER. Seriously, that looks really good.

Re: My take on the Leman Russ

    Update time!

I am now trying to figure out how I want to build the eradicator cannon, but I have documented every step of the way basically, to show you how to make my 'Totmacher' variant. (I just love that word, it sounds so badass. )

Anyway, I´ll start with the boring bits. Raising the sides.
Just place the wheels one "jump" under the slots they are supposed to go in.

You will have to cut of the little rods that stick out, otherwise it wont fit.
Also, you need to cut away some of the plastic "support frame", to be able to fit everything.

Then take some think plasticard, I have used 1.8 mm plasticard for almost all the work done here.
    Make two rectangles, 10x90 mm.

Bend them carefully to fit the form of the Leman.

    Tada!

Re: My take on the Leman Russ

Ok, now on to the turret.
I cut out all the pieces I needed from the sprues, and some plasticard bits. (I´ll give you a template later. )

You need to remove all the details on the top of the leman turret. Like this. Be sure to save them all, you will need them later!

If everything went well the turret should fit like this now.

Also, the top plasticard bit will need to have an "angle", like this. Note that you have to cut the front to be flat. New plasticard are going the be attached there, as you will see in the next post.

Then just carefully cut all the plasticard bits so the edges fit, and it should look like this.

Re: My take on the Leman Russ

Since I'm kinda sloppy, i made some miscalculations, and my turns out like this.

    Luckily greenstuff exists, so np.

After that its time to make the boxes at the back fit once more.
Its just the standard boxes from the sprue, with the middle one replaced with new plasticard sides so it will fit the new turret.

Re: My take on the Leman Russ

Now all you need to do is attach the lids and the details from the turret that you removed before. Like this.

Here it is with the standard gun attached.

Only lacks tracks and a head for the commander. And paint.

And here you have a template for the bits you need. I realise it might be abit tricky to understand what i mean, but you could always just print it out and cut it up.

p.s. The little square in the left-hand corner is the front bits, and you will need two of those. Forgot to write it.
