Thread: Tzen's Word Bearer's blog

    Re: Tzen's Word Bearer's blog

    You mean like this:

I was at a gaming club on Friday and we are kinda at the whim of what the club has available. Which If I am honest is pretty good for a gaming club!

But the above picture is my usual set up, realm of battle with GW terrain. I can't do anything more than that at the moment because I don't have my own place any more, have gone back to uni and no space in halls etc.

I gave some comments over at B&C about the Doom, but in short I think some closer reading of the rules are in order.

    Re: Tzen's Word Bearer's blog

I realised the other day that until the new codex comes out I have no idea what I "should" be painting for my army.

So instead of painting anything because I have to, I decided to try a few different techniques on some havocs.

I'm semi happy with the power sword, I need more practice at painting this sort of "mirror" look, but I think that will come with time. I have the basics down, but I lack the experience.

An airbrush would be bloody lovely too.

I love the new mephiston red base colour GW do. I don't get to blend the reds up in my standard word bearers army like I have here, because quite frankly it would take me ages. But I have more than a painted army now, and I think I can start going back to painting things "well" as opposed to trying to get things done for the table top.

I much prefer the blended dark red, seems way more "Word Bearer" to me.#

Ignore the face and the silver, I'm really painting these to experiment on. When the new Havocs arrive (if they ever do) these guys will be replaced straight away). Would like this model in finecast though.

Same here, since that Havoc Aspiring Champion torso(?) is now OOP, that would be cool.

I think the Power Sword looks great, as does the gradient black-to-red armour. For the sword, mixing in a tiny bit more white for the final highlights will help a lot.

The effect on the powersword is nice and smooth and the red is both smooth and deep (just the way red should be). Like you say, it looks properly Word Bearer.
It's always excellent to take time to slow down a little to broaden and improve the technique. Totally worth it in this case!

Tzen!!! you are on the move again...and i think you are too hard on yourself with the sword and the way you used to do your models and now....the sword looks very nice...it looks like you put quite some time in it...which i should really learn to do once with my grey knights weapons.. you inspire me to do better...that has to count for something i'd say :P
    keep them coming

    Re: Tzen's Word Bearer's blog

    Cheers Breazer!

Sadly I haven't had the perfect conditions for painting recently. However I just finished this Havoc. The over all paint job isn't that great again. These are not great models, so I don't find myself very inspired to paint them once I've finished practising the blended red.

Anyway here are some pics. Quite like the red. Ignore the rest of it

If only the Chaos Codex had been released this month :/

Okay, last Havoc finally done. Took me ages to build up the enthusiasm to be bothered to paint the last guy. Here he is, and here is a screen shot of the squad also. Notice from left to right the different tones of red!

I'm gonna have about 2 weeks tops to really go to town on the new starter set minis. I wont be converting them, but I imagine I will buy another box some time down the line and convert some of them up!

Tzen, awesome stuff. It's been ages since an update, have you gotten any further?
I meant to ask, I don't know if its in the middle set of thread pages that I haven't seen, but what did you do to make the hoods empty, just drill out or fill it with something? They look very smooth inside.

    Re: Tzen's Word Bearer's blog

I'm a very poor student these days, and I spend most of my time studying for my English Lit degree! My Word Bearers are stuck in an attic back home, I'm hoping to get maybe something done over the xmas period, but the chances are very slim. There simply isn't a gaming scene anywhere near me at the moment so I'm trying to keep my hand in the hobby by buying White Dwarf when I have the cash.

I've got the whole Dark Vengeance Chaos minis to paint, plus all the stuff I mentioned here, so hopefully during the summer I will be able to crack on with it all! Sorry but the last thing I painted was the Havoc squad, literally nothing else to show

Hoping to get something done over the holiday period though!

(I'm that poor I don't even own my own copy of the new codex!)

Sorry I didn't address your question, I just cut the marine faces off with clippers and then cleaned it up with a knife. After that it was simply greenstuff to smooth the rest out and a dark paint job! Easy really!

Once I get my degree finished and I'm in a job again and settled, I will be forking out the cash for this bad boy:

I'd love this and the space hulk type board. I lov emy degree, but sometimes I see all the cool stuff im not able to buy and wish i was still working :/

    Re: Tzen's Word Bearer's blog

Summer is coming! Between writing my dissertation and trying to let my brain recover from academic overload I plan on playing some games and doing a lot of painting!

I am on a shoe string budget at uni, I literally live off small meals a day and don't get to use public transport etc etc. I don't mind, this isn't a sob story as I knew what I was getting myself into before I got here!

However it hasn't left much money for hobby purchases. I do however own these:

Impulse buys a while back, and ones I shouldn't have gone without food for, but I just had the hobby urge! I am pretty sure you all know what I mean!

If I can somehow get my paints before I head off home I will be doing some paitnign sooner rather than later, however I only have two months left before I have access to everything.

I have to say this Dark Apostle may end up getting replaced at my local hobby centre as the finecast is pretty bad. I will have to take a closer look when I crack it open. I quite like the idea of finecast but it's a shame the process produces a lot of dud models. I can sympathise with folks who hate it.

And in regard to the new Chaos codex, I hate the fact they got rid of the chaos undivded mark. I realise you can still replicate the effects to a certain extent, but I am a lore lover at heart, and having the Word Bearers changed so much in one fell swoop is horrible Mostly because I have to give my Daemon Prince a mark of one of the gods. Seems so odd.

Anyway, hopefully more updates soon. Itching to get the paints out!

    Re: Tzen's Word Bearer's blog

Yeah, the changes to the background suck. My way of coping is to simply change the word 'Mark' in 'Mark of X' to 'Blessing' (in my head at least).
That way I figure my Dark Apostle gives a squad or character a 'Blessing of X', which gives a buff for the battle. So they are still as Undivided as ever, but they can gain the favour of whatever God they deem appropriate for the battle ahead. The blessing of Nurgle would grant them warp-infused resilience, and Slaanesh would heighten their reflexes to insane heights and so on.
It works for me, and having a 3++ save on the Dark Apostle is pretty neat.

Yeah I am trying to see it like that too.

From a game play point of view I guess I can just not take a mark, or I can use the marks as blessings as you say. Shame about the fluff side of it. But the Daemons codex got rid of undivided too

Ah well, maybe next codex it will make a triumphant return... :/

It wouldn't have felt like such a travesty if the banners weren't limited to specific Marks. If you could take any banner with any Mark/Unmarked units, that would have alleviated some of the annoyance, IMHO.

I haven't read, touched or even seen the Daemon book, so, no idea what's going on in that thing.
