    Re: Alphachicken's Saim-Hann Warhost

    Hey again,

    I did a late night job, finished up the avangers' bases, prepared 5 more bases for tomorrows session, and cooked up something special;

    I hope you like it. Unfortunatly there's a symmetry mistake because of the cockpits bulbous design, but I won't bother with it on this tank, since I got 2 more to do right now

    Here are the bases getting prepared:

    I hope you like it, see you soon \o

    That serpent looks amazing. I might have to try something like that on my next round of tanks.
    Hope you don't mind me stealing.

    Really nice red there Azriel45, and I loved your aspect warriors

    Thanks a lot for the comments =)

    Didn't do a massive amount of work today, I painted 2 more GJB's, finishing up my 3 troop choices. They're now all based and all varnished, ready for gaming. So we're left with the fun stuff like converting warlocks, the autarch and the fire prisms, hurray!

    Here are the troop choices;

    I hope you like them! see you soon \o

    Wow! The Jetbikes and the Wave Serpent look great!

    I also really like the red Dire Avengers, unconventional, but they look awesome!

    I'm curious, you have varnished them, but the colors are just as vibrant, what varnish do you use?

    Its the GamesWorkshop's satin varnish, I believe its called purity seal. I think its the vallejo colours that make the difference though, you have to try them to believe it

    I agree, I think the red avengers are a stroke of genius and make for a very coherent looking force.

    I wanted to do sam-hainn, as they are my favorite craftworld. But Green is my favorite color and I love the war-like nature of Biel Tan, so I think I am going to do a mech heavy, lost of jetbike having biel tan list.

    Awesome work Alpha Chicken, Awesome work.

    Hey man, do you drybrush, airbrush or are you just painting over a black undercoat with the red. Could you give us some clues to your process?

    There's no drybrush or airbrush involved. I really don't like the effect of drybrushing except bases, Its a fast process but it looks bad compared to other techniques, and the airbrush....well I never had the money nor the space to buy one, since I move around often between university and home, and never had a stationary workplace. It would speed me up a lot though

    Its basically black undercoat, then multiple layers of Vallejo Bermellon Red (model color range). Its a high-pigmented red which means it paints like foundation and looks bright, just 2-3 layers is enough to look like what I'm doing here. The key is to work very watered down layers, so painting in batches of 3-5 is good here, otherwise you'll be waiting for 1 model to dry up for hours, and I'm a very, very impatient man.

    The rest is just attracting the attention using proper made gems and symbols, which tie-up all the models and make them look like an army.

    Another important thing is deciding weather or not to do highlighting. I disagree on highlighting red, since it either looks pinkish or orange (like the gamesworkshop studio saim-hann army). I believe only blacklining and shading does the trick enough, there's no need to disturb a perfect looking bright red

    Thats about it really, if you want, I can take some step-by-step photographs of the process but there's nothing really special to see.

    Oh and thanks Slobomeister, I intend to return to marines when its WOLFTIME!, for now I'm happy with my eldar!

    Re: Alphachicken's Saim-Hann Warhost

    Some mass amount of photos will follow, due to the mini-tutorial that was wanted.

    Following is the fire prism I did today, it took me 3 movies to get it done, so abour 4.5-5 hours total.

    Here's basically the first step, where I painted red all over the hull using vallejo model colours. I do this with a flat number 2 brush, about 2-3 times to get a flat nice red. Then the black lining is done with a fine-tip 00 brush using the new washes.

    Then I use skotch-tape to do the black lines. I use this method for the bikes aswell, which speed up the process. If you're doing this, make sure there's no air bubbles beneath the tape, and the sides stick properly to the model, otherwise you'll have paint dripping inside.

    Then I do the freehand on the model. Its basically up to you to do this or not, but I believe it surely makes the model special. You can either draw it first using a fin-tip pen, or simply using a brush like me.

    Small details such as gems and details are done later. Some fixes of the blacklining and other things like the freehands. I also threw on some paint on the pilots. They won't be seen properly from the see-through canopy, so little colour is enough, no need to detail them.

    More to follow ->
