    Red Imperial Guards

I have made up this log on another forum at first, but i thought i would post it here as well. As time go i will make more additions though there might take some time before some new will arrive for now. But enjoy these pictures for the time =)

    Some comments on the pictures:
I felt i wanted to do womething different. A long time ago i started painting some red type guard but never got farther then one squad. Then it took about 3-4 years before i came back to them and i though "Bugger this, i want to try something new". Okay, i didn't think exactly that, but i thought that trying painting mostly with washes would be interesting.

So, i tried to spray the minis with a codex grey-ish colored primer and painted baal red on armor and helmet, ogryn flesh on the clothing and badab black on the weapons and boots. All these washes are painted in two thicker layers. The skin is elf flesh with gryphonne sepia over and the metal is boltgun with a thin layer badab black.

The catachan rough riders is an idea i must have had for 10 years ever since i saw the conversion in the catachan codex. And i though that now that i collected some skill (enough to perform the idea at least) i would do it, mostly because i always wanted a unit like this and partly to serve as an tribute to my first IG army, the catachans. They are dead now, killed over the years in experiments in converting.

They are painted more simply, snotling green base, dark angel stripes with two layers of thraka green over it all. Rest is same as above.

I choosed this method since i wanted to be able to paint up large amounts of guards in little time since i knew i would want atleast a bit over 100 in my standard army. The sand is a red sand that wan't red enough according to me, so it received a dose of baal red to make the red deeper and the wash is perfect for this since it leaves the stony veins and such still there, just a bit more red.

Thumbs up Re: Red Imperial Guards

For the vehicles i couldn't just slap on the washes, it looked crap. So i had to mix up some red and brown paint that was about the same colour and then apply one or two layers of wash on top of the paint to get it to look right. Otherwise not much to say there except that im kinda proud of my swappable punisher/battle canon, and the look of the punisher canon. You only have to take a glance and you think "Yup, that's a punisher canon and no mistake!" =)

I also liked converting the grenade launchers for the catachans. I simply glued on the grenade launcher where you should place the lasgan on the catachans and then green stuffed the glap between the stock and the GL. This gives them a little different look from the cadian GL, but still looks the same basically.

Marbo and Straken is two of the few catachan models who has survived through the years and i had fun painting them up again. I kinda doubt i will use Straken all that much, but Marbo will more surely see gaming time since he is cheap enough to field most games and fun to have. He also serves as a tribute for the long lost catachan army which was my first army ever. The reason i started with them originally was that you got most models in their box XD

But then i came to love them in a special way, and i still like them but i prefer the look of the cadian models. Also, cold one mounts look absolutely superb, love the look on them. They were painted in snotling green on the top part with the scales and dark angel green on the underside. Then i applied a wash of warlock purple, on or two layers. The saddles are snakebite leather with a heavy dose of devlan mud. And i mean heavy, like two thick layers heavy. The horns are siply bleached bone with gryphonne sepia to give them a yellowish look. Same with teeth. Eyes are light blue with a skull white dot as pupil/light reflection, gives them much more life then properly done eyes i thought after some testing.

pretty cool, like theyre fighting on mars or something!

i like the tank with the "gatling cannon"
and the catachans on the cold ones are a bit wacky!!!

Yeah, a red planet kinda like mars was the basic idea =)

Leman russ punisher canon. Not all that effective i think, but it looks cool and is kinda fun to play with ^^
Thanks, as said im pretty satisfied with the look even though the new cold one models are far better looking then the old catachan ones.

Here's my Fleet officer. The coat is painted in enchanted blue with one or two layers of leviathan purple wash on top of it. Dwarfe bronze for metal details, badab black for the black, snakebite + devlan mud on brown stuff. The hair is sunrust yellow with gryphonne sepia to give it a blond look.

Decent results with the washes. I like the colors and the way the armour and uniform goes together.

    Re: Red Imperial Guards

Yeah, the result is decent which is all i hoped for honestly. It looks much better then simply painting them scab red and graveyeard earth, but looks inferior to proper high-lightning and shadowing.

I wanted to experiment how much work the washes can do in ones painting, and it turned out to be a lot =)

    Re: Red Imperial Guards

Just had a painting night of doom sitting up 'till 8.30am (08.30) since I had to get things done for a tourney I'm going to participate in. Anyways, these are my ratlings. Comments about them will take some time since I haven't got the time for that now.

    Edit: Comments.

Note/reminder: All models are primed with a codex grey-ish base primer.
These were interesting models to paint, and for the food stuff I decided they brought cheese and chicken with them. Simple to paint, just a basic orange-ish color and a brwon-ish color. I think I used devlan mud on the food, I used devlan mud on much on these models. Clothes are snotling green with devlan mud, leather and skin as above.

The red capes are blood red with baal red on top. The bricks were washed thinly with badab black at first, and then a thin layer of baal red. The rags on the rifles on the guys leaning on the brick walls are painted bleached bone and devlan mud. The lens are painted in a simple three step shadin, going from dark to light blu. I tried with a bit more advanced six step shading on the gems just out of curiosity, going dark green to light green. Finally the apples were painted snotling green with a wash of thraka green (I'm pretty sure).

Thanks. I bought the plastic tubing from a swedish retailer, http://www.gamemaniacs.se . It's Ever Green Scale Models that produce the plastic tubes, cards, rods etc. Dunno about how international they are, but if you mail gamemaniacs perhaps they could help pointing you in the right direction.

Awesome job on the conversions. I think that you did an amazing job on the Punisher it looks like it was made in a factory.

    Small update:
Have started on a psyker battle squad. Promised myself that I would only do one if I got a nice idea about how they would look, and I got one. These three are the first out of nine. The overseer I'm not completely sure about how I will do, but I'll figure something out. The idea is that the overseer channels the power from the mindless psychers to perform the effects. So modellwise it will be inverted how it is rulewise, but I like my idea.
