First off, awesome stuff. Really well done. I especially like the highlighting on the horsies' barding. It just looks clean and good.

Now, of course I have to ask... Where are you from? If you're anywhere near Zaandam/Wormerveer, drop me a line. Perhaps you can come over and hang out at our club!

    Keep up.

Like me, he's from Maastricht. Come and join us for a day of battling if you want. We can play 2on2 or all against all. Bring a friend: I've got a gaming table or we could play in the store. I also have a fridge with cold beer (if you're of sufficient age).

    Re: Stonetroll's Bretonnians

    Hey guys,

Sorry for the lack of updates, I have subscribed to the tale of fantasy painters for this year, so I'm preparing for a good start with that atm! As my first month's entry I hope to finish 19 Men at Arms and my newly acquired Battle Standard Bearer.

I have the standard model but wanted to "spice up" the bsb a little bit and below there are 4 pictures. I am unsure if I should add the lance on his side or not (it's blu-tacked on atm). I am planning on fielding him with the Wyrmlance most of the time so it would help with WYSIWIG issues, but I'm unsure if it's not too busy on the model.

What do you guys think, add the lance or not?
Thanks for the encouragment so far!

P.S.: Excuse me for the horrible pictures. They're only quick WIP shots and I hope you can make out the necessary details.

I'm looking forward to seeing your entries every month.

I wouldn't put the lance on the BSB, it doesn't look right somehow.
As far as I'm aware lances just weren't transported that way.

You could try and have him carrying the lance in the hand which his sword is currently in?

If you decide to go with the lance, make sure that the flag on the lance follows the overall "wind flow" of the rest of the model. It would probably work if you simply cut the flag of and reattached it to the lance upside down.

GREAT paintjob. A brettonian army full of different colours and well executed is indeed a joy to see.

    Re: Stonetroll's Bretonnians

I must agree with EmperorNorton here. The lance looks somehow out of place, IMO. I definitely wouldn't put it in his sword hand either, as it would really unbalance the model.
If you want to keep it anyways, make sure to fix the flag as Wulf said...

The peasant bowmen look great, the knights look even better than that - really beautiful painting. As for the freehand on the shields, it's not a big deal. I think it looks very nice, and it's probably appropriate since I doubt Bretonnia has many laser printers to get off carbon-copy heraldry.

Gah! Sorry to nit-pick, but I just noticed one thing: the winged talon on the shield of the Knight of the Realm with the red and white horizontal stripes is facing the wrong direction. The heraldry on the shield and left side caparisoning of the mount always face the same direction.

Also, Battle Standard Bearers cannot have a lance anyways(or any upgraded equipment other than for a mount/barding), and they can't have a wrymlance or any other magic item other than for a magic standard. See the "**Army Battle Standard" sidebar on p. 67 of the Bretonnian army book.

    A cookie to you sir!

I noticed it myself, but by the time I saw that it was mirrored I had allready covered the decal with 6 layers of varnish to make sure it would stick, so it was impossible to get rid of it again. JUst painted it and it isn't too much of a hindrance during gameplay so I'm ok with it.

I'm amazed that no-one else noticed it yet

This is where you made a mistake mate . Check p 121 of the BRB. It states specifically for magic ARMOUR that they cannot wear a certain type of MAGIC armour unless they can carry the MUNDANE version. There is no such rule for magic WEAPONS. So although I cannot give my BSB the Enchanted Shield, he can definately take a magical lance (even though he can't take a mundane one). It's quite a common setup and a nice loophole in the rules that makes him have a little punch.

    Cheers

That´s true, but I always play the BSB with the Sword of Might. It´s cheaper and let me use the virtue of duty.

    Re: Stonetroll's Bretonnians

D'oh! I missed a key part of the entry, but you are right and not right(I think). The BRB covers general rules, but the Bretonnian army book covers the specific ones, which specifically states that a Paladin BSB with a magic banner can take no other magical items of any kind, but still can take a Virtue. So, the only way to take a wrymlance is to have a mundane banner.

I usually take a magic banner, but I guess not everyone will. You may wish to model him such that he could have a magic banner or not, which means not putting any extra equipment on him. Versatility in a model is always a nice thing.

    Re: Stonetroll's Bretonnians

No update in ages and my apologies for that. I have joined the TOFP so wanted a good start for that. Got my first month's entry finished and so some pictures here:

    BSB

As can be seen I did add the lance afterall. In the picture it hasn't been permamentely attached, but it is now and I made some greenstuff straps for it connecting to his belt, looking not too bad imo.

Next up some Men at Arms:

    Total first month's entry:

Also putting up a total army shot in the first post. Will update that with every month's update for the TOFP.

So, what do you guys think? Comments welcome!

That's certainly a good start start to the ToFP, that BSB is just awesome. Your freehanding skills are uncanny.
The men at arms look great too, the attention you give these rank and file troops really shows.
    Great painting! Keep it up!
