Those minotaurs really are shaping up nicely, but with two months to go I wouldn't like to see you rushing them. Ditch the imperial BFG stuff from your list to give you a bit of breathing room and concentrate on getting them finished so I have something nice to look at

Oh, and paint the purity seals you lazy git! And I might have mentioned this before, or you might have said it, but get some grass tufts for the bases.

    That is all

Re: BFG Imperials, Scratchbuilt Orks and 17th Flexeberg IG!

    Hello

Marine bases are being grassed up, yes indeed. I am driving towards getting 3 Tactical squads fully done for your enjoyment now. Purity seals... Not sure how to do them - green seals, with gryphonne sepia over dheneb for the paper?

Oh, and I had a productivity EXPLOSION for my Imperial Navy! I only have four escorts left to do - some Soryllians gifted by Gomez that I'll be using as a kinda 'heavy' Sword pattern. All the escort groups are attached bottom of page.

Apostle of Fire - Overlord battlecruiser attached to the Big Red One as squadron flagship.

Imperial vessels painted in the red trim of Guternacht squadron and led by an Overlord battlecruiser have bombarded several Tau colonies in recent months. Trading caravans have also been attacked without provocation and the Explorer class Foshang lost with all hands to a surprise strike. Exactly why commander Drusus Var is conducting such a ferocious campaign against previously peaceful aliens is unknown, though he has a reputation for genuine disgust towards Tau in particular.

ALSO... I needed a change of scene as some hobby therapy and suddenly remembered my second Ragnarok scratchbuild. I have added a power plant and assembled the hull. Needs more detail and hull plating, more rivets and the tracks need a bit more bling. Thoughts? I've made this one slightly longer than my first build.

Please do comment, guys, I don't want to start getting slack! Although the 40K Tale has really helped me stay productive recently.

Excellent stuff, Jihad! Took me a bit to pick through this whole plog, but it was totally worth it
I have to say, I was always intrigued by BFG, but never seriously considered playing it. Your scratchbuilt ships really got me inspired though. Lots of clever recycling.
Great work on all the painting too. Your details are very crisp, and the highlighting is great. Hope my painting comes close

MOAR BFG! I love seeing well-painted BFG ships, and yours are great I'd get a fleet or 6 myself, but the wallet weeps whenever I see the price. So I can live vicariously through logs like this one

    Comments!! Precious comments!!!
Dannage - Well, if you checked in more you might not have that much fun - I would class my update speed as 'average.' I'm taking your post as a compliment by the way

Demoulius - Thank you, my friend! The ramships are largely built from an Imex Chemical Plant kit, which is an awesome source for parts. The Ragnarok also has its power plant made from it.

Here's a pic of the box contents:

AtmanAbecedarian - Hey buddy! Wow, thank you for reading through the whole thing, I'm honoured that you enjoyed it. I've always had a soft spot for BFG - I think your converting skills would be put to good use building ships yourself And thank you for the kind works re painting - there has been a slow improvement over the 2 or so years since I started. Darn, I feel old.

New Cult King - Haha thanks, mate! Glad you like the new stuff! Yeah, it's stupidly expensive these days - I keep thinking about buying some small fleets from GZG's Full Thrust range but the scale is slightly off. Not that it matters if you consider these ships are tiny pin points in space.

I have some more BFG stuff coming for you - I want to get painting my Hammer battlecruiser and escorts while I'm still motivated!

Re: BFG Imperials, Scratchbuilt Orks and 17th Flexeberg IG!

I have been working away at my Crusaders - what I like about this project is going back to models I previously painted for the force and adding further bits and bobs to them as I flesh out the fluff. For example, initially only 70% of the Marines had freehand script on their pads but now I'm embracing the zealotry of these guys... So had to go back and give them all freehand :S-

Anyway, nothing left on the latest ones except some bolters and their purity seals (shut up, Gomez) but I'm leaving that for another day - they need plenty of those and my hands are rather shaky after last night's pub adventure :P Oh, and I still need to paint in the 'circuit boxes' on the backpacks.

The Crusader Space Marines are based upon Imperial Fist gene seed – it is not clear why this choice was made over the more popular Ultramarine option. The Chapter maintains their forebearers' reputation for crusading zeal. Fanatical in their devotion to the Emperor, they honour the concept of supreme sacrifice in the Emperor's name and revel in the effect that their idealism has upon heretics and aliens.

There is no reference to Rogal Dorn in Chapter teachings or the preaching of the Chaplains. This does not appear to be down to a loss of records. Armour is a bright bronze or duller golden hue in acknowledgement of the Golden Throne - the red pauldrons of their armour represent the blood of martyrs that the Imperium is founded upon. As previously described the pads are decorated with personal slogans or sections of Imperial dogma. The Marines are encouraged by their Chaplains to decorate their suits with these inscriptions as part of the bonding between Marine and armour.

Distinctive features of Crusader ideology are an emphasis on attaining physical and mental perfection. Marines will spend hours perfecting different forms of armed combat or occupied with deep meditation and prayer. Their belief in the purity of human form has meant strained relations with the Mechanicus and those Chapters descended from the Iron Hands. Faith in technology and bionics does not sit well with the Crusaders.

Similarly, the Chapter has no psykers in its ranks – the Chapter maintain that they are loyal to the Imperial creed by magnitudes above those that employ such mutants. The strength of devotion amongst the Crusaders means Chaplains are highly regarded by their congregations and there are frequently at least two within each Company. They are depended upon when a new Chapter Master is chosen - all Chaplains will convene and determine the new leader by virtue of strength and battle honours.

Comments and criticisms encouraged - I'm enjoying putting this force together but welcome any suggestions for the fluff and the modelling/ painting in general. What I would like to do is have 1 Tac squad of beakies, one of Aquila armour and one of mixed marques (using the MaxMini heads you can see on some of the photos).

Damn mate, your painting has gotten REALLY smooth! And adding more freehand was a good move, those big red shoulder pads definitely need some contrast. I think some squad or company markings (even individual heraldry) on the knees or legs would go a long way to adding some contrast to the bronze as well. White markings maybe?

    Cheers,
    BTB

These are some seriously awesome Space Marines, my friend. Your painting is ace as usual and the color scheme is very appealing.
I enjoyed the fluff, especially the bits about the Chaplains. They are easily my favorite HQ option in the SM codex. Only a true badass adorns himself from head to toe with skulls.
The bit about each Marine being encouraged to personalize his armor is cool. I think you could represent it a lot more by adding personal heraldry or something like that. It would be a lot of work, but it would add a lot of flavor to these excellent minis.
Do you have a chapter icon in mind for these guys?
    Keep it coming
P.S. I may have to dabble with building a few BFG bits

Re: BFG Imperials, Scratchbuilt Orks and 17th Flexeberg IG!

BTB - Hey buddy! Keeping well? Thank you for the comments, I think part of the success is down to these guys being painted using several washes. Cheating works

Markings - I will certainly add unit type to their right shoulders. Probably only a small icon tho, nothing fancy. For the knee pads... Just for you, I will add some white numerals and see how they look

AtmanAbecedarian - Yes! Make some BFG! My plan for world domination is working Regarding personal heraldry I'm not so sure - my freehand skill are not very strong but maybe I should try. I want to add some suit icons to each squad (using the parts from the DA sprue quite alot actually).

Chapter symbol... Well, I was thinking the Dark Angels sword minus the wings for simplicity's sake but now I'm not so sure. I want this Chapter to represent guardians of humanity... Perhaps a black fist? Suggestions welcome...

That metal is great, though they look a lot like Minotaurs, maybe add a marking to set them apart? What the recipe for that amazing bronze though?

green seals, with gryphonne sepia over dheneb for the paper?
I'd go for red over green - it stops it being a distraction by contrasting.

Ragnaroks shaping up very nicely there. I still can't believe your doing each track link individually you mad sod.

Marine wise I'm liking the script. It suits them really well and its not over the top. The running heavy bolter guy is particularly nice and the static grass has improved the basing a lot. You should do a few more in those helmets.

Anyway stop slacking off cause its Christmas, come on chop chop!

Re: BFG Imperials, Scratchbuilt Orks and 17th Flexeberg IG!

GomezAddams - WibblewibblewibbleRagnaroktracklinkswibble Re. purity seals, I was actually surprised you suggested red as I was worried it would make them too samey but I'll go for it - kinda wanted to do it anyway!

Yeah, I love the running heavy bolter Marine - I will try to work some more of those helmets into the force but I am NOT cutting any heads off after all the trouble these squaddies are causing

OutofContext - Don't leave me for so long ever again Really pleased you like the armour!

Converter15 - Yeah, they were originally going to be White Minotaurs but IA re released the whole Minotaur vibe. I don't like the current fluff so I decided to go for something different... But it's pretty tough making them look different.

I need to decide on a symbol and I might even be giving them a new name. Again. Once I have a group shot and an HQ unit we will hammer it out properly

    Recipe for the bronze armour

    White undercoat
    Boltgun Metal base coat
    Two coats of Gryphonne Sepia
    Shading coat of Devlan Mud
    Watered down 'wetbrush' of Boltgun.
Job done! Maybe some extreme highlights with Chainmail if you fancy.

Firstly, the bad news - no progress made on my Space Marines this month. Considering the sheer volume of alcohol and food consumed over the holidays I count myself lucky that it's just the one this month!!

Now, the good news! The current Imperial Navy group are finished!!!

I think I had an advantage in that BFG ships are quite easy to paint but I'm still really pleased knowing that I currently have no Imperial forces left to paint! One reason for so much success must have been all those escorts.

Here are some photos of the completed ships. Photograph four is a close up of my counts as Swords - they are Soryllian frigates from Firestorm Armada and I really like them! Courtesy of young Mr Gomez.

Sorry about the pics - its late so no daylight BUT I was champing at the bit to get these guys posted up. So deal with it. XX

I welcome any comments, suggestions or criticisms - this is the second wave for my Imperial Navy and they represent a major boost in numbers for me. There is a subtle improvement in paintjobs but they should still mesh fine with my older lads.

As always love seeing your BFG. And those frigates really fit! Guess it's the similar aesthetics of the weapons batteries that does it. Maybe you could run them as AdMech vessels?

Oh, by the way, I got a new log in the fantasy section (again...)

Re: BFG Imperials, Scratchbuilt Orks and 17th Flexeberg IG!

    Thank you, my friend

I think alot of people have looked at the Soryllians and thought 'Ad Mech.' I will post up some fluff for my revised fleet that will explain this squadron's presence - they're a redesign of the Sword that the Mechanicus are monitoring on active service.

They need some edge highlighting and windows but I'm leaving that for now.

I am feeling rather burned out on the painting front. I have 3 Ork pieces to do for my BFG Ork thread then they are completed too - that should help me feel more motivated to play with my toys!

As long as you keep the shade of red on the purity seals different (darker!) it should be fine I wouldn't worry about changing any of the heads either - it adds character but too many would make it a bit samey.

Ships look lovely, far better then the half arsed, over metallic I would have done. There nice and muted which fits in well with your other ships in that the different design isn't quite so apparent at first glance. How are you differentiating between them?

Re: BFG Imperials, Scratchbuilt Orks and 17th Flexeberg IG!

1200 hundred posts and I'm still alive!!! Wow! 1200! And I'm bloody 30 by the end of the month too!! ARGGHHHHH!!!!

I'm not dead Recently, my work in London coupled with living in a crappy flophouse has seriously effected my motivation to get things painted up. I also suspect that my love for the hobby has subtly moved away from the idea of raising large armies and is focussing on smaller forces - hence my successful completion of BFG Imperials and Orks while my Space Marines have somewhat fallen by the wayside.
However, I have enjoyed some recent work on random bits and it has made me feel alot better about myself - I will continue to update this log and I apologise for being so slap dash over the last few months.

A Seneschal (rank equivalent of Captain). Seneschals are responsible for the command and administration of a Company of Marines. Their duties include matters of local justice and exercising Imperial authority where the Administratum is not present. Each Seneschal is expected to carry out his duties without recourse to external aid - the Chapter strives to attain perfection and to think that one of it's members would need to turn to lesser men is practically repugnant to them.

Inquisitor Gerion Thorne of the Ordo Hereticus. This inquisitor is wearing Mk 6 power armour, which appears to be naked steel save for the Inquisitorial seal on left shoulder.
I got this lovely chap from GomezAddams. I did a minor conversion, giving him a storm bolter. Alot of Inquisitors seem to like getting up close and personal but the firepower of a stormbolter shouldn't go amiss! I am happy with the final result, it was hard work making the purity seals and shoulder tabard pop out but some highlighting and freehand has made them much nicer. I can also use the inquisitor to generate some fluff for my Chapter.

Oh yes, and I beginning to think about naming them Brazen Fists - this links them in with their Imperial Fist forebears and it also gives a nod to the Brazen Minotaurs that they would have been if GW hadn't bloody well relaunched them. Also, I quite like the implication that this Chapter are quite proud and 'brazen'

    Thanks for looking, guys
