Project X - Ongoing guard, marines & random

Recently discovered this site and really enjoy the project logs, its always good to see whats out there and draw inspiration from some of the great ideas. Anyway as they say, an army is never really finished & mine seem to conform to that theme...so thought i'd start up a project log of the latest ones. I don't play but like to paint.
Currently focusing mainly on Ultramarines and guard, UM Fifth Co to be exact,(i like black, it comes out of a can! ) and just keep adding to the guard since the valks prompted me to do an airborne detachment.

Anyway dunno how often will update, its more the photography that takes the time. although my camera kinda makes the pics blue...might need to work on that... oh well

Very cool models. You did some nice conversion work! It's a pity that your pictures are a little bit dark. Keep up the good work!

    Cheers folks!
and sorry for the quality of photos, prob should invest in a daylight bulb and borrow a better camera, but have been taking these pics either with fading daylight or normal room light reserve daylight for painting!
But Still waiting for that stuff..

Exploding boy: not sure about Sharpe, i want him to look more heroic but can't figure which pose and what weaponry...maybe a shouldered "rifle" and waving a sword about. but once more bits arrive might have a play...i can't seem to leave some models alone..

Anyway Sharpe and the rest of the chosen men, (count as special squad sniper team i guess??) i loved that series.

Well the first thing to do is have a look at your cameras settings. They usually have a setting for the type of light you are using that filters the colours automatically.

You guys look good. I'm in the middle of painting up my first Ultramarinefrom the 2nd company. What's your recipe for UM blue?

    I like the Sharpe refrence.

Wow man you rock! These are awesome Marines and Guards! Special mention to the 'nid hunters and kasrkin sergeant.

How do you model those guys (guards) with rolled up sleeve? And do you have any WIP pics of the kasrkin sergeant, I'm curious to know how you made that one.

Keep up the good work, you are inspiring!

Re: Project X - Ongoing guard, marines & random

Thanks again for the kind comments!

twokingmick: UM blue? well me being a cheapskate when it comes to actual materials, i have a limited range of paints....but start of with black under coat, then a mix of ultramarine blue/chaos black ..i don't really do ratios just see what it looks like but if i hazard a guess its prob around 1/12 black to every part UM blue. then next highlight is usually pure UM blue, then edges of armour are done with 1/3 blue 2/3 fortress grey, and depending on how patient i'm feeling could do another highlight with 50:50 blue grey, then further highlight of Fortress grey, and then skull white on any edges that look like they should have them...

jpwyrm: cheers fella guard with rolled up sleeves? just some good old fashioned chopping, have catachan spare frames about so chop off at the elbows and with a bit of repositioning bob is your proverbial uncle...if i'm lucky don't even have to Greenstuff sleeves! lol! Sorry no wip of the Kasrkin sgt. he's an old 'un...was mainly a case of greenstuff and a bit of shaving. arm is from the heavy weap sprue shaved to a better angle. and plates & goggles are all green stuff. i think on that one i just put blobs where i wanted plates waited for it to dry before cutting and filing them into shape.
Prob not the most efficient way but it was a one off...might need to perfect that as thinking of doing some more squads from plastics...but Hope that helps

anyway stuff finally arrived, woot! but so many flash lines to clean...
might do a harker squad..dunno what his rules are not that i play but just for weaponry accuracy, but just from seeing other peoples he looks cool...have some ideas for his squad..but see how it goes

So in the meantime more old stuff

Very nice, especially the crispness of the whites and the freehand on the Land Raider. A question however, where is the head of the marine on the right of the first picture from? It looks like the special edition veteran sgt. from the old box set but I don't think it actually is?
