Thread: Fable's Ulthwe Army

    Re: Fable's Ulthwe Army

Another day and another GEFN unit done in preparation for Saturday's big Apoc game. I think when I go back over this unit I'm going to do a fade on the cloaks, but we'll see. I'm definitely going to color the boots and gloves brown. I really am leaning towards the fade though, if only because I think like it adds some more color to the force:

I have been doing some work on the side on the Falcon and completed the Pilot:

In other news a new toy arrived today:

I expect it will have the Glaive and D-cannon for the apoc game. I just don't have enough time to paint the Pulsar and I won't do a hurry up job on it.

I did the least work on the third Corsair squad because I want to do a lot more work on them and didn't want to have to work a lot of areas twice, but I got them done enough to play with in the Apoc game Saturday. Just a tank to go:

So, after a week of rushed preparation one of the guys from our apoc game ended up getting called in to work, so I had to rush and cut 5k from my list. The poor Corsairs were cut. On the lighter side it meant everything was based and done. Saunders and I faced off as an Eldar team against an unholy alliance of Space Wolves, Grey Knights, Orks and Daemons. We lost, but we had a great time.

The phantom survived the game, but not by much. It only had about 2 structure points left at the end of the 4th turn when we called it.

Those bikes are a giant unit of wolf lords with eternal warrior.

I've started work on the Pulsar finally.

The red blending was some of my best work. The sheen from the red ink will be gone when it gets dullcoted but I'm really excited to get the second half of the gun tomorrow. maybe I'll even finish it tomorrow!

In prior games I've used it to pop a Revenant. In this game it didn't get to do too much because I couldn't charge the units I wanted to (the flying MC's our opponents had were virtually untouchable and secured them the game) and the Stompa was immobilized early.

A bigger moment was when our opponent played his slaanesh strategem that allowed him to take over my phantom for a shooting phase. In that way the CCW prevented that from being much much worse.

Honestly I was surprised by how little effect the super heavies had in general. Overall the Titans feel a lot more vulnerable now and some armies certainly have dirty tricks for dealing with them absurdly cheaply.

Wow, that seems a bit over powered to take over a titan.....

It is a very powerful stratagem, but I believe it is attached to a character similar to a Vortex Grenade (which I also had to deal with, along with Lucas the Trickster who's special power we treated as an instant Vortex Grenade that goes away) and has a range limit of 24" to that character. Its power is very situational. To be frank, it had less of an impact on the game than the 5 flying Eternal Warrior with Invul Save Monstrous Creatures which we had no real response to. Now most of the titan weapons can't really engage them because they are blast or template weapons. It gave our opponents total air superiority as we had a total of 3 flyers combined (one of which died on the DS) to their 6 combined. At the end of the game they just flew over objectives to contest them.

    Re: Fable's Ulthwe Army

Tonight I worked on a project I'd been considering for a while.

I has wanted a banner for my titan for a while as I always liked the way it looked in the concept sketches. I had an old black T-shirt I was going to get rid of and decided it would be better served becoming a banner. I did some sketches, worked out an appropriate set of runes including creating one for the Prophets of the Storm (Fir Dedannan). I could never find a rune that indicated a D-cannon so I made that up as well. All the runes are hand painted. I'm pretty happy with how it all came out:

So what do you guys think... is it a nice compliment or is it too much:

I've had a couple different ideas for banners on the titans and all of the Greenstuff or plasticard options came across as awkward fits. On a model so large using actual cloth just felt like a more natural fit. And I managed to use the banner to do something I've never done before... sign a model. In the small circle of detail at the top of the banner I hid my initials.

Well, it still needs 'ardcoat and dullcote, but essentially the Pulsar is done.

    Re: Fable's Ulthwe Army

I had the bits around to make another tank so I figured I'd take a crack at converting a firestorm, even though I think it's a bit overpriced. I adamantly don't like the FW turret, but I had an idea that I thought I might be able to pull off. I created a turret from plasticard. I didn't make it able to rotate, but I was making aesthetic choices.

I used plasticard and GS and spare missiles from the Razorwing kit and two of the scopes from the Shuriken Cannon upgrades.

I'm now trying to figure out how I'm going to paint it if I should make it another craftworld tank or a Corsair tank.

I too, hate the standard FW turret. It definitely looks more old-style Eldar and less like the newer, sleeker designs FW has since informed. This is a very nice alternative. Well done.

A Firestorm without scatter lasers? Time to tank this thread's rating.

    Re: Fable's Ulthwe Army

I painted up the firestorm turret section just to see how it looks.

I finished my converted Firestorm. I'm quite happy with how it looks among my other tanks. I don't think it will ever be quite so effective as its points demand, but I'm looking forward to seeing it on the table, that's for sure.

I did some work on the Corsairs again, finally getting around to making the Bladesworn Retinue that I've been planning on. The whole unit has Power Spears and Fusion Guns. The bodies come from Swooping Hawks because I think they look pretty dynamic. There are 4 spears, two of which are from Dire Avengers and two are from Scourges.

The helmets are from the Wych kit and the pilots to the Razorwings.

I made the fusion pistols by cutting off the tip of the barrel and reversing the splinter pistol.

    Re: Fable's Ulthwe Army

I'm finally getting around to replacing another model I previously sold when I was sick. Karandras.

I'm hoping his 2+ will give me enough survive-ability for the unit that I can get them in to combat more regularly. One reason that I'd held off on this for a while is that the model lacks the feeling of more modern models, most specifically the helmet. I can make tweaks to it now that I couldn't do quite so well with a metal model. My streak continues of finecast models without miscasts. Here it is before I did anything:

The first change I made was updating the Shuriken Catapult built in to the Scorpion's claw to be more in line with the current Exarch:

Then I took off about a third off the helmet from the middle to drop it down and took off the outer pincers on the mandiblasters.

I shaved out some of the dreadlocks as well and greystuffed some replacements closer to the helmet which allows me to turn the head to the side a bit more easily.

I know the original design of the helmet was supposed to look like a scorpion, but it's enormous. Also, in the codex on page 58 there is a picture with statues of the Phoenix Lords and if you look on the left you'll see that Karandras' helmet only has the single mandiblaster barrel so I'd say the adjustments I made to the model are more in line with what a modern re-sculpt would look like.

Nice job on modernizing Karandras. He's certainly looking much more like a 'modern' 40k model than the previous one, nicely done. Post it to GW's FB and Twitter to get their arses in gear!

A shame GW seems to have decided to not update many of the older sculpts. Eldrad, all the Phoenix Lords (except, IMHO, Baharoth. I'd say Jain-Zar except for her stupid hair and rather un-feminine mask) and pretty much all the Space Marine specials need redoing... Sigh. Maybe FW will do them... That I'd love to see!

Thanks! I'll be sure to set it in to their Flickr account too.
Well, he's mostly finished. I'll spray him with dullcote along with the scorpions after the last basic scorpion is done (I never got around to painting him). If anyone notices a very slightly lighter shade of green it's actually because there's a very slight difference between dawnstone and Codex Grey, but I think most of the time it would be unnoticeable. Anyway here's what Karandras looks like with while still 'ardcoated:

I'm still surprised by how light weight these finecast models are compared to their metal counterparts.
