if I called a SM army Lostprophets, they'd be blue, white & black, like the Fake Sound of Progress album

Yeah these will give a nice subdued look to them. Also use some army pics to get an idea of what desert fatigues look like. Hope you do add some colours here and there though just to break it up a little.

Edit: Whoops didn't notice the blue stripe. That breaks it up nicely!

    Hmmm

I think we need bigger pictures before we can judge anything else. Now get those test paint jobs done up quickly so we can see what it looks like on a real model!

There are other amazing threads about that I'm sure cover desert armour but I just can't think of any atm.

    Re: The Lostprophets Space marine's

Darksun is a good choices for the basecoat I agree.

Here's a suggestion to save you time tho- how about an undercoat spray to seriously save time? http://www.thearmypainter.com/produc...oductgroupId=2

    Try Desert Yellow perhaps?

Anyway, I hope to see progress, the basecoat with a wash of Badab black or devlan mud should work nicely for you, good luck

Not a bad start, i think it needs quite a lot of shading/highlighting to break it up. will look quite plain otherwise, and maybe a different coloured Knee/Shoulder pad for different companies etc, to again break up the monotone look to it.
Which colour dod you use in the end out of interest?

    Re: The Lostprophets Space marine's

That doesn't look bad, pal, it's neat, not too patchy and the colours themselves are appropriate. I would recommend using a washe or watered down ink for quick highlighting/ shading like eltanko recommended.

Your painting will improve with practise! One thing I would say is be careful when doing the rims of the shoulder pads, they could be neater and they draw the eye as they're so prominent.
