My Ultramarine Project - almost 150 Ultramarines and vehicles.

I have been working on this for a while and have 40 guys assembled. I got the primer coat on, the first undercoat blue on, and the bluewash on. From this stage I have about 3 hrs for every 2 models - I have to block paint the large areas and highlight, and do the details.

Unfortunately with a 2 year old and an 8 week old I don't get much time. So far I have 5 tyranid hunters finished and 2 terminators finished (except for painting the bases). I will try to get a couple done a week and keep posting my progress.

These fist set of pictures show my attempt at painting the symbol on the shoulder but I have decided to start using the decals. I first put a layer of gloss varnish, then microsol, the decal, again microsol, another varnish, and finally a coat of testors dull coat. You can't see the edges of the decal at all and I am really happy with the outcome. I'll get those up in a couple days when I can take pics.

The boys in blue look great. Very neat and clean paintjob, very suited to the chapter. Really enjoying the red on that powersword especially.

You'll not find much love for Ultramarines here, unfortunately, but they always were one of my favourites I'm excited to see more.

Also, should the decals start giving you trouble, your freehand is certainly strong enough to compensate

Are you planning on fielding a certain company? Or a more combined arms force?

I agree with Weaver, it looks very clean. I don't have anything to add, well above table top quality. Are the bases finished yet?

Thanks for sharing the tip involving the gloss varnish, I should really give it a try.

Thanks for the comments. The bases are based just not painted.. will have them done, painted, and up this weekend.

I am planning on either 2nd or 3rd company but have enough to field half of first company and a quarter of 10th company. I have Sicarius and want to use the model but it seems everyone has made a 2nd co. Because I can't make up my mind I am painting 1st co right now.

Those termies are really good, I like the effect on the power sword, what is it? Pity they are smurfs though.

Thats a nice paint job! Quick question: You use a blue wash to get the shading in the recesses....you then directly highlight onto that? I've been painting my smurf off shoots using quartered enchanted blue and scorpion green.....i've been using black wash followed by a reapplication of the base coat then highlights. Your models look far cleaner than mine though!

I am trying to remember the mixes from memory but will probably have to recant and edit this when I get home. I start of with a primer coat chaos black, then airbrush mordian blue, and then airbrush the gw blue wash. I then go back with a 00 brush and paint 2 parts mordian blue (GW) 1 part ultramarine (GW) on the surface area's leaving the recesses dark blue. Then with a 000 brush I highlight with a 1 parts ultramarine (vallejo) to 2 part electric blue (vallejo). Top that off with Testors Dull Coat.

I am using the gw airbrush and found that a badger hose will adapt it to a compressor. Also, in a WD article they talked about using a 1x1 stick with sticky tape on in. I tried it out and had 40 plastic and metal models on it and they all got their first 3 coats at the same time. In less than an hour I had 3 coats on.

And here are my 2 chaplains and my Terminators with decals on the shoulder rather than free hand symbol.

Re: My Ultramarine Project (2nd Co. and some extras)

Well, it was time to ***** or get off the pot. I started painting grey knights because there was no decision to be made…. they are silver. I finally decided that I liked the Sicarius model from Medusa V campaign the best. I also have the new Sicarius and the Ventris model from Black Library which I will eventually paint up. So 2nd Co it was. I love this model and have been wanting to paint it for a long time but didn’t have the confidence to paint it. It took around 4 hrs from start to finish. I will have to speed up the process if I don’t want to be painting this army for the next 20 yrs. Of course the like company guys won’t get the same attention to detail. I am pleased with how it turned out. I hope you all enjoy it… please post any comments or suggestions. I will try to get on a schedule of painting 4 hrs a week. With a three year old that is going through potty training and a 4 month old that no longer wants to be left alone in her swing (no kidding for three months she would rather be in her swing that held) it is getting harder to find time unless everyone is a sleep. At least I have the next 40 guys assembled, primed, and the first 2 coats of paint on them.
