This would have upset me a few years ago but previous price increases have slow moved me away from GW. I think last year my spending was around 25% GW and 75% other manufacturers. There is some slight regret, looking at GW projects I have had in the back of my mind for years and are now slightly more unlikely to now ever happen. Only a few days to order that cities of death table prior to price increase...

Infinity is a damn fine game. Maybe not for 40k fanboys or people who like whatever 40k could be classed as but infinity has a good future ahead where as gw and 40k may not.

Plus skirmish games are where its at in money terms. Unless your mega rich or just like the kool aid gw aint for you

Re: Games Workshop Pricing Feedback Thread

Frankly, a non-skirmish game in 28mm (more than 30 models a side, max, and for the sake of this argument I'll include 'model' as a regiment) is too unwieldy. Warhammer 40k has outgrown itself, and there's a reason Warpath isn't as well-received as Warlord was: it fails to simplify the basic problem that it's simply a clunky game.

BA, you should look at games like the aforementioned Dystopian Wars/Firestorm Armada, go for Epic, Battletech is a valid and very fun scifi big battle wargame (well, Battleforce/Quickstrike is...), but don't be stuck in an unimaginative and ill-constructed game just out of sheer inertia.

I'm kinda looking forward to a game called Leviathans, which is about giant airships battling it out over Europe in the year 1910. Steampunk is kinda fun.

Because the model range currently sucks? Even if you like Mantic's models and aren't bothered by the fantasy+goggles aesthetic or the use of restic, you're still looking at a maximum of five units for your entire army. If you play Forgefathers you've got a Captain-equivalent, a Thunderfire-equivalent, a Tactical Squad-equivalent, a Devastator Squad-equivalent and a Veteran Squad-equivalent. That's it. No tanks, no terminators, no dreadnoughts, no bikers and no berserkers.

Has the company historically raised the prices on the same items in the different regions?

If the UK price rises are on the same items, they're not really on anything I want or rather insignificant (except Land Raiders) so yay for that.

Well, personally I'm very, very happy with these price rises. Why?, well apart from a few paints & BL novels & (very) occasional epic stuff, I buy nothing from them - no boxed sets for spur of the moment conversions, no character models because they look cool & would be fun to paint, nothing, so the more they raise the prices, the more I save by not buying it.

Keep it up GW, keep it up!

I just bought my first Warhammer minis since 2010...a box and 3 blisters of Voland's Venators, used.

I think the 71% raise on that terrain features thing takes the absolute cake.

...and to think I was finally going to step away from Inquisitor and Necromunda and random painting projects to finally start an actual army. Ah well, at least I've saved myself a lot of money?

They're going to find it a lot harder to draw new people into the hobby with hikes like these.

Who is their target market at this point?

A Land Raider is not worth $75. It's not. What insane person out there looked at a $66 Land Raider and said "Ooh! Good deal!" to begin with?

There are projects I want to finish - projects that are barely, if at all, affected by these price hikes if the list is comprehensive - but I hate the thought of encouraging GW at all.

This is not the right way to increase profits.

They effectively canceled my Marine projects with this one. Marine tanks went from expensive to not-happening in one fell swoop.

Oddly enough, Necrons and Dark Eldar could be expanded since the increases don't seem to hit anything left on my "to-do" list outside of battleforces...but still.

My Marines and Grey Knights were sad, though, when I told them they would not be getting any metal boxes to ride in. Marines haven't lamented that much since the Emperor got hooked up to the Golden Throne.

Rhino chassis tanks are going to have to drop in price before I revisit them. I'll probably cock my head in wonder at the people who buy shiny new predators, land raiders, and stormravens in the coming months.

I would, but then, our RRP for a land raider is AU$110 now, and our dollar is on parity with the US$.

I think something worth nothing is that while prices are going up and a lot of attention gets given to things going up 20%, but often the same item isn't going up by that much year after year, and it usually only averages out at about 4% a year compounding. This is for things such as vehicles and marines, in the case of swarm armies, the prices have risen faster, but that seems to be from GW's focus on being a modelling company before being a gaming company (remember boxes of 20 cadians?).

The new hive tyrant is cheaper than it was years ago, and the new kit is so much better then that old metal thing thats now gone.

That's why when they makes a unit plastic and charge the same as when it was metal I don't care. To me the model just got better for the same cost, who cares about anything else.

Wow, I think I'll have to call my portfolio manager and have him invest my money in Games Workshop figures, since the rate they are increasing is outpacing most other investments. (I wonder if those FaceBook IPO folks would rather be holding Land Raiders right now?)

Heck why keep money in a bank account or money market getting a measily <1% return when you can stock up on Storm Ravens watching your investment increase 25% a year.

On a side note GW stock is up over 34% from the prior year so don't count on support from the investors (not customers), they won't be questioning GW management any time soon.

Re: Games Workshop Pricing Feedback Thread

Well three of my armies are now listed for sale on ebay.

I simply can't justify owning more than a couple of armies and having to add to/update them all. I'll keep my Ogres as I own pretty much everything I need for them, and I'll start a Lizardmen army now that the finecast Slann and Salamanders etc etc are confirmed for release, and will just update the two armies when new books/models come out for them. The only reason I'm going to go ahead and start this Lizardmen army is because I've been waiting to start one properly for a few years but could never get round the amount of metal's they had in the LM line.

GW are absolutely losing the plot. I've always mainly purchased from online retailers, but occasionally picked up the odd character or two from GW, but alas, no more. Places like Gifts for Geeks etc seem to care more about the game than GW themselves do, and so they will get my money instead (as they usually do anyway).

I honestly don't know what they're thinking. If they want people to buy direct from them this needs to stop. If a newbie goes into a GW store, they're looking at paying waaaaay over £125 for the models, tools, books, paints etc etc for a basic 1k fantasy army in a lot of cases. It's not as if people can just lay down £125 just to get into a game they might not even enjoy fully in the long term.

Hell, look at the two year price: http://www.google.co.uk/finance?q=LON:GAW

If I'd invested £100 in GAW on 1 Jan 2010 I'd have doubled my money today.

GW's demand curve seems pretty price inelastic but there's got to be a point where the kiddies parent's won't stump up the cash for a space marine box anymore and in my opinion that's bad business. Wondering where that price point is...

Re: Games Workshop Pricing Feedback Thread

GW appears to be going full bonkers. Just a couple years ago, Land Raiders were $55, now they'll be $75, an almost 50% increase in a couple of years. Codex books were $20 just a few years ago, now Codex: Space Marines is going to be $41.25, a 206% price increase in the cost of army books in 5 years? Other games charge similar costs for hardcover, full color books twice as long. Chaos Spawn were $25 when released in Sept 2007, now they will be $41.25 in 2012? A 165% increase in 5 years for a unit nobody takes?

The issue isn't so much that GW is raising prices, it's that GW is raising its prices at an astronomically faster pace than the rate of inflation, and at a time when real income is stagnant or shrinking for their customer base, they are making the cost of their product more expensive in real terms, and significantly so, and putting themselves out of reach for their market. They are raising their prices at a rate out of all touch with reality.

I've been a pretty huge GW customer over the last few years, I've bought thousands of dollars worth of stuff from them. As much as I don't want to be "that guy", saying "I'm storming off to play another game", it's basically gotten to that point. I think I've bought 1 GW plastic kit in the last 18 months? I've bought several Forgeworld kits, but they're no more than most GW items now and they look cooler. I have on the other hand started a whole host of other game systems, for the same price as rebuilding just my 2000pt IG standard list (much less any of my other armies or extra stuff), I built 2 Firestorm Armada fleets, an Infinity army, and 3 Heavy Gear armies and the books to go with them. GW has just gotten too damned expensive.

I have a feeling I'm gonna make a killing off all those NIB Rhinos I horded from our local shop's closing sale.....who knew that was going to be a nice investment

Well I won't be finishing my DE army anytime soon.....recently cut my losses and sold my non-white scars marines/orks, scrapped my necron project, most likely going to shrink my army to just my IG/CSM and Empire/orcs&gobbos now

No way I can afford to expand now, I'll just stick to Dark hersey here for my 40k fix and I have enough to stay in fantasy long term
Check out Warseer's 40k novel project, a storm of carnage involving the Imperium and Tau Empire with the Alpha Legion close at hand
