So priced at 25% off GW miniatures cost what they should have cost in the first place.
So priced at 25% off GW miniatures cost what they should have cost in the first place.
Well, IMO...
In some cases, yes - most Core infantry and most infantry boxes in 40K are worth it at about 25% off (maybe even 20% off in some other cases - I'm thinking the $25 and under boxes).
40K tanks would be worth it at about 30% off after the recent price hikes.
Fantasy Special infantry could drop by about 35%, as could hardcover army books.
Characters could probably lose about 50% of their cost and be more attractive, especially mounted ones.
Personally, I love MM. They don't ship out of the US, but everything you order from them is 25% GW price and they have points systems so every dollar you spend gets you points that you can use on future purchases. I will never buy directly from GW or their stores again... except for gamesday. Here is something someone posted on the Rumor Boards
My FLGS just posted this on facebook (prices in US $):
Rule book $74.25
Munitorum Templates $19.75
Servo Skull Tape Measure $16.50
Psychic Powers (English) 32 Cards, Leaflet $13.25
Munitorum Dice 12 Dice, 6 Dice Holders, Tin $16.50
Munitorum Battlefield Objectives $16.50
Munitorum Vehicle Markers 12 Dice $16.50
Gamers' Edition (English) Rulebook, Dice Set, Satchel $123.75
Collectors' Edition Rulebook $132.00
Personally, I can't fathom spending $132.00 on a freaking rulebook, regardless of how "special" it is supposed to be. You can't honestly tell me that the Collectors edition rulebook is going to have twice as much useful stuff as a regular one.
Also the gamers edition? To me it seems like they have filled it with crap. Who in their right mind needs more dice or a tape measure? Aren't these already needed to play the damn game in the first place? I don't know, I know some people will buy into the hype and will just HAVE to get these things. I may spring for the collectors rulebook, but I will be getting it from MM where I will get 25% off on my purchase or my indi where it will be available for the same discount.
Shadowsun is going up from US$25 to US$40? That's incredible.
Think that also might be something which GW is fighting hard against now - value. Beyond just the increased costs of things, there really doesn't seem to be an increased value related to them. Yes, there are some nice plastic kits (most the Dark Eldar line for example) - however an even larger number of them are old models with new prices. No increase in value really. The collectors edition plays the same as the regular edition book, there isn't an increased value for what it does.
And of course, that whole comparison to other peoples games. If you were to go ahead and use that same $132 on a Mantic Kickstarter Pledge - you would get the hardback rulebook...and it would have your name in the book (I assume probably in the forward in the form of a thank you. Not only that, but you also walk away with an Orc Army, and Undead Army and a bunch of other stuff to boot. You would even have a few bucks left over to buy a back pack to stick your stuff in.
With every price increase in the past they have ended up making more money in total sales revenue than they lose in decreased sales volume, which is why it has become an annual occurrence. The fact is they aren't adding value because they don't feel they need to- just look at the price increases on some of the kits over the years for evidence of this mentality. Some of them are identical models being sold for twice what they were when they came out. Unfortunately this means when GW actually does add value to kit through a new sprue or extra bitz, they feel more than justified in further raising the price for doing us such a favor.
I've realized that there are only two kinds of views on this forum the haters and the fanboys... and even if you are in the middle will try to force you to one extreme.
Personally, GW has priced me out of buying their products at their retail price. Just started a new job, got a wonderful woman to take care of... toy soldiers are fun but they aren't life. I will be buying from MM and other online retailers from now on with the occasional purchase at my indi (because I have store credit). My girlfriend got my a surprise a couple weeks ago (gamesday tickets for both of us.... yes she plays) so I have put aside $50 for that venture.
The truth of the matter is, I love the Warhammer and 40k universes... I have an entire bookshelf full of black library works, 5 whole armies. Yet I feel like GW has become so commercialized that GW no longer focuses on these fantastic worlds that they have created for us to experience... once they get back to selling the experience, then I think you will see me and other stop complaining about the prices.
The price for the new rulebook is up in the news and rumour section. The Canadian retail price is $90.00, yet the American price is only $74.25. Our currencies are almost at par right now, so that is a disappointment.
I don't even want to look at the Aussie price. I reckon it'll be around $120 at least.
Those who know don't care any more, and those who care don't know.
The exchange rate is not the only factor with how prices are set in the retail industry. When will this fact be learnt.
Also the super duper collectors edition is going to be bought by those same people that spend £150 on the call of duty mega box set. Some people just like to have something thats rare.
I bought the Warhammer 8th Ed collector's edition rulebook.
It was nice, a very swish book to have on my bookshelf... but not that much nicer than the normal rulebook, and slightly less convenient to read, and I ended up buying the A5 rulebook from a bitz site in the end anyway. Plus we all know it will only last four years.
I won't be bothering with the 40K 6th Ed collector's rulebook. I can understand why people do (having previously done so myself!) but it's not like GW stuff is getting any cheaper... I'm already restricting myself to books only, no more models; may as well go for the non-ridiculous version of the books too.
Last night I attended a drugs awareness course as part of my community work, and I can finally say that yes where I live a STORMRAVEN is now MORE EXPENSIVE than the local going street price of CRACK COCAINE.
It made me laugh inside big time, as it is now accurate to talk of needing my latest fix of plastic crack.
Some charitable person might want to start Warhammerers Anonymous.

I am old enough to remember when White Dwarf reviewed books and RPGs.
Proudly Warhammer's most cynical player.
Ah, but it was certainly a big factor in their pricing when it worked in GW's favour. When the Aussie or the Canadian was low against the greenback and pound, it was commonly sighted by the company to explain the price discrepancy.
But suddenly, when the Aussie is stronger than the US, and close to two-thirds against the pound, all of a sudden, current conversion has nothing to do with their prices. Either way, GW was/is screwing the antipodes.
Young lady, I am an expert on humans. Now pick a mouth, open it and say "brglgrglgrrr"!
And even more in some cases.
Aye, and I find it even worse when people then respond with, "Hey, that's pretty good value!" or some such.Unfortunately this means when GW actually does add value to kit through a new sprue or extra bitz, they feel more than justified in further raising the price for doing us such a favor.
When did GW release something? Was it plastic or metal? Who sculpted it? Come find out:Fantasy, 40K, LOTR, BFG, Blood Bowl, Epic, Inquisitor, Man O' War, Mordheim, Necromunda & Warmaster
The same thing applies for Canadian retail pricing. The strong Canadian dollar has seen the gap between Canadian and American retail pricing narrow considerably. There has been a fair bit of consumer backlash in Canada over the slow reaction to fix price discrepancies as Canadians spoke with their wallets by purchasing their goods from American retailers. A lot of businesses have adapted by being more competitive. It is entirely reasonable to expect a good number of the new rulebooks to make their way north through the post rather than being purchased at local game stores. The logic of pricing what the market will bear gets knocked around a bit when consumers have greater access to information about pricing elsewhere and a greater capacity to make international purchases.
Having said that, even when the Canadian dollar was a lot lower than the American dollar, a $15.75 gap between the Canadian and American MSRP would be considered large for a book of any type.
I don't see it quite like that. I would say that very few people are "haters". They may not like the pricing policy, but largely like the background and even the miniatures.
I have been collecting GW miniatures for over 20 years and have more than enough of them to last for quite awhile (even discounting the old ones which were really bad). I can field apocalypse sized armies of 'Nids, Marines, Eldar, Tau and IG. I still have three complete unopened army boxes (the old army boxes when they still did those). Full sets of White Dwarf and Citadel Journal all the way up till 2008. Various Black Library fluff books (none of the regular fiction though) and all the rules and codices from Rogue Trader till 5th Edition 40K.
However, now - I can not in good conscience recommend the game to anyone. The miniatures are not that good. The rules are not that good. The fluff is just a smoothie (bits and pieces from everything else tossed together). All of that wasn't problematic until the prices became that bad. So - when people see my collection, GW never gets my endorsement. When we play games, we don't use their rules (though miniatures from the collection are often pressed into service with the other rules).
It isn't hate though, just the prices make them not worth while to me anymore.
Seems like one of my posts got deleted, sorry it was off topic.
On topic: any idea why the templates are so expensive?
