Thread: Games Workshop Pricing Feedback Thread

Re: Games Workshop Pricing Feedback Thread

I was already planning to have to take a couple of scratchbuilt vehicles to my gaming club, just about the only silver lining to this news is that maybe I wont be the only one. It's galling having to swallow my pride with my 2nd ed models on papercraft transports in the face of people that regularly buy a new 1750 army when the latest codex arrives.

Argh TOTP... Sure sucks to pay them aussie prices huh?

Spent about 250$ for a Mantic undead army, supplemented by a few reaper minis. The biggest expense was for the undead cavalry, which really aren't necessary for a VC army. Total body count, 306 models. Cost of the GW skeletons alone is more than what I've paid in total, and quite frankly, the models just look better. The "Army of Darkness" look is far more appealing to me than models that look like they were inspired by Michel Jackson's Thriller video. I'll be trying out the Kings of War rules as soon as possible....

I for one am semi glad at GW prices nowadays.... it has inspired me to start a historical army instead of a new fantasy one.... Although I will keep my Brets, and game, and maybe even add on to my army(using gripping beast knights) I won't be purchasing another.

This is what I'm doing. I just ordered $60 worth of Malifaux and have everything I'll need to play full size games for one faction/army/crew until I decide to start another one. Rulebook, deck of cards, crew box set and one extra blister pack. Done.

The Mantic Orcs look fantastic as well. I might get some of those. They're not silly/goofy like the GW ones and the price difference is staggering.

My challenge to everyone who reads this thread and doesn't like the current GW prices-- take some time and check out Mantic, Wyrd Miniatures, Privateer Press, etc.,.

Privateer Press isn't really any better on a money per model basis. The "savings" as it were is that you don't have to spend as much money to get to the playable level of points.

Absolutely. Same with Wyrd/Malifaux. Well, except now GW's metals are gone and replaced with super expensive resin. So I guess Privateer's and Wyrd's metals are cheaper than GW's new resin that they replaced their metal miniatures with.

If you want quantity, Mantic is the place to look.

And thats the entire difference. Malifaux is a bit like that as well. You have games that require low model count for high cost per model (PP). And you have games that require high model count for low cost per model (historicals). And then you have GW, which is high model count for high cost.

Argh. My Astral Claws. My orks. My tyranids. I know they want to make money, but this has gone beyond ridiculous and into the Realm of Chaos itself.

That's one thing I'm not so sure about. I think the game works best at 1000-1500pts. It can be fun at even less. From what I've seen over the years, it's players who led the push for bigger games, not GW. GW did listen to them and accommodated them, but I never felt like GW forced big games upon us.

I am really keen to see a massive price hike in the near future.

    100%? 200%?

That sort of price hike should bring the balance sheet to bear for the share holders.

I have already started getting some warmachine, and the FLGS is getting in to Malifaux.

There is one cheap place for people to buy GW miniatures though; ebay. As many people abandon the greed machine, like rats from a burning ship, ebay should be flooded with cheap minies that no one wants

But the thing is, to me at least, Warhammer is the only popular mass battle system out there. So if you are not really looking to do the mass battle thing but instead want to do smaller games personally I'd just go all the way and pick up any one of the really good skirmish games that are out there and get a game that's actually designed for that kind of scale.

I'll finish my tomb kings. Then I'm out. Might still get the books and an occasional model to paint. But I doubt I'll spend more than $100AUD over a year.

These prices are ridiculous. Looking at some of the new finecast costs when I was doing my summaries last night. even with approximations this has become to prohibitive.

Malifaux & Dystopian Wars here I come.

I'm out, finishing what I have for fantasy and sticking with 7th ed. 40k I will buy the books till 6th and then I'm out there as well. I will probably by enough to keep my armys going, but no new armies.

Dude, have a go at Mantic's KOW system. So beautifully simple, yet retains good complexity.

If you're looking that way, then take another look at the GW specialist games too. Lots of alternative manufacturers for those too.

    But what if you're a 40k-er...?

Hmmm. I won't say you're wrong or right here, but I doubt the fact that bigger games led to bigger army sizes and bigger turnover for GW was entirely a happy coincidence.

Yeah a sci-fi alternative would be great and there is a massive market for a well priced nice game system. Mantic definitely has one coming, and chances are it will be this year sometime, but as to exactly when... They probably don't even know yet. They have been rather sneaky with releases lately, it could crop up at any time.

This thread, the embargo thread, and the resin thread have seen a massive increase in activity in the last day or so as rumours have converted into news, and a huge amount of negativity towards GW. I hope this time that people actually do vote with their wallets and GW sees a reduction in sales significant enough for them to notice.

My first thought with the embargo was to put in a big order while I can, but then I realised... Why give more money to the company that is screwing me? I will probably put in a small order of a couple of things I have wanted as display pieces for a while, but thats it. No more.

People didn’t like the new rules, but no one bought the new minis to use with the old rules, either. In the early 2000s GW tried again with Epic Armageddon. Most of the minis were rereleased (and sometimes simplified) E40k models, but the new rules were very good. It flopped even worse. It didn't even account for 1% of GW's revenues.
IIRC at its height E:A hit 4% of GW's revenue.

It quickly slacked back off though.
