The Hobbit movies may well allow GW to reposition themselves in the market and either extend their bricks and mortar retail chain or shrink them depending on how they want to go.
Either way the next two years are going to be good for GW.
Hopefully it will be goiod for the LotR game as well.

I really don't think so. As EmperorNorton said above, the realm of the Hobbit is relatively narrow in scope and doesn't lend itself well to an expansive range of miniatures. Consider also that:

1) GW has already alienated their LoTR player base with massive price hikes and little in the way of support over the years and
2) There is unlikely to be a massive influx of new gamers given both the high entry price and comparatively small player community.

I think the magazine deal got them loads of new customers. More than they could handle, if some comments made on these boards can be believed.

I gather that De Agostini is a magazine, however we don't get the publication here in the states. Did GW sign some kind of deal with them?

De Agostini is a publisher, the magazine was called Battle Games in Middle-earth.

I remember seeing it advertised on TV fairly regularly and those ads got me to buy a few issues here and there. It was a massive success and probably did wonders in creating awareness of the game.

No, they are not renewing the publication (as far as I know) and consequently there will be no ads on TV.

Ah, I think I see - so the expected yield from The Hobbit is even further lessened by the lack of TV advertising that LotR SBG received through the De Agostini magazine.

I am now in the precarious position of deciding whether to back out of 'The Hobby'(tm), if these price rises continue. I have tried the other systems and they're not appealing in the same way (imho). This could very well be the death bell for me :-(

Question:

What does the hobby of wargaming mean to you?

Is your main interest painting and collecting miniatures, kits, and armies?

Having fun by matching wits, luck, and skill against your friends?

Reading about and recreating situations from the history of a given wargame?

Commanding armies in a world of fantasy, a world of science fiction, or a world which blends both?

Or just shelling out more and more for bits of plastic and inferior resin to support one lone company that doesn't care about you as a customer any more?

Figure out your priorities as a wargamer. Establish them. And then you'll enjoy the games again.

For me, the main aspect was playing with friends. Frankly, friends are important to me; while I love the other parts of the hobby the part I enjoy the most is plopping minis across from a friend and rolling for initiative. Hell, I'll do it even if it's in a system I dislike, like Warmachine or D&D 4e.

If at first you don't succeed in finding an alternate game, don't give up the ghost; there are LOTS of games out there, some of which are probably familiar to you - why not introduce Blood Bowl to your local gaming group?

And even if you don't buy any more GW minis, it's not like you have to stop playing their games with friends! There are actually plenty of companies out there that exist solely because GW has priced so many people out of the market.

HAHAHAHA! Oh good Lord, they've lost it. If these are US prices, they've actually lost their minds. Well, crossing 2 40K projects off the list - well done, GW!

Yup, and if the prices go up in Europe in the midst of the current uncertainly that is equally insane and if they go up in the antipodes it is hard to see anyone buying anything from their local GW store. I get raising prices on low sales kits liek characters and squads/units you will only buy a few of but raising the price of popular plastic kits by 15-25% is just mad. If I were paying anything other than British prices I'd certainly be considering scaling my purchased way back.

I'm actually embarassed and ashamed for actually pondering starting a new WH army - Skaven. I almost talked myself into it via the "it will be relatively cheap to start thanks to IOB" - that's what I get for reading "Greyseer."

Is it just me - or did almost all the Finecast stuff actually just go up in price again!?! Some of them - like the horrible ******, decrepit old Skaven Jezzails that are now over $50 - are actually getting laugh out loud funny.

I can't even comprehend the rational behind some of these increases. Here I was entertaining returning to 40k for 6th edition now that I know a few players, but I just can't do it at those prices.
