More fun with washes.

I've been messing around with the new GW glazes this evening and I must confess that I'm a fan.

One thing that always bugged me was that the Sepia wash over mail created a fairly "dull" golden colour. It looked nice, it's just that sometimes you want to have a brighter, yellower gold.
Using the method described above, it's easy to do now with one extra step. After doing the grayscale thingie and washing with watered (or mediumed) down chainmail or silver, apply some yellow glaze on the areas that you want to be golden. Then apply a coat or two of Sepia (or it's new replacement) and you're good to go, a brighter golden hue that looks rather good

I can also vouch for the red glaze "fixing" the lack of vibrancy of the red wash. As long as you apply the glaze before you apply the wash you will get a more vibrant colour while still retaining the shading/highlight effect of this method. Please note that you still need to mix Baal Red with either a brown or yellowish wash to get rid of the blueish tint. There might also be an application of the orange/yellow shades that just came out but I haven't had time to mess with those yet. I don't have the new Carroburg Red so I can't comment on that yet.

I've tried the grayscaling method but I've had better results using Devlan Mud instead of Badab Black as the first wash. And you can skip the white drybrush.

Mother of god. Does anyone have example of yellow clothing with this technique? A dirty kind of yellow in particular...

Some more experimentation today and some conclusions :

- Do not be tempted to try and put down a coat of the new Orange wash before applying Baal Red to soften the tone. Looks funky.
- Gryphone Sepia and a coat of yellow glaze make for wonderful straw-blonde hair
- A mediumed down (one part paint to two parts medium) Kislev Flesh followed by the new Reikland Flesh wash looks lovely. Reikland flesh by itself is alot better than the old flesh wash if you want a less ashen result like before.

I think it was three or four coats of Gryphonne Sepia over the standard grayscale technique. You can obviously go for more coats if you want it darker.

So I totally didn't notice there was a yellow or orange wash. Making a proper red wash is easy now, just one coat orange, one coat crimson. No need to mix in glazes.

Did you try it? I did and it looked very dirty, not red at all. The orange wash is very pronounced. Maybe I did it wrong but wouldn't recommend going that way. Although I did it with the old Baal Red and not the new Crimson, which looks completely different.

Tried messing with the color red some more. This carnifex is done with one coat of orange wash, then one coat of crimson wash.

I'm happy to share it with you.

1.) White Primer
2.) all the metal bits (I took Plate Mail from Army Painter Warpaints, I think it is similar to chainmail)
3.) Details on the metals with Balthasar Gold
4.) Black Wash of the whole model. I took from Army Painter Warpaints the Ink Dark Tone ( NOT the Dip!), but the Black Washes Badab Black oder Nuln Oil would be quite similar, I guess. I tried to make the wash not too thick and to avoid any pooling...
Big Squig drybrushes the models lightly with white after this, I skipped this step

5.) Casandora Yellow for the clothing
6.) Athonian Camoshade for the skin
7.) Drakenhof Nightshade for the armor plating
8.) Army Painter Warpaint Ink Soft Tone (similar to gryphonne Sepia or seraphim Sepia, I guess) for boots, straps, gloves, skulls, teeth...

And that's all! White Primer, Black Wash and one coat of ink! It's just an amazing effect, very simple and very quick. Thanks to Big Squig.

First thing first, THANK YOU for this guide and I'm excited like a 10 year old on night before the Christmas to paint my lizardmen with this method.

Few questions though, I'm trying to get dark grey scale and light grey skin should i approach this by doing one coat of nuln oil on skin and 2-4 coat of same wash on the scale?
I also was informed that nuln oil gives dusty finish, if this is true how dusty is it? Will the skins on my lizardmen looks awkward due to this?
