Badab black. Same for the hooves
EDIT: Also the metals are very watered down chainmail so the gray scale would show through. Badab black was the applied for the silvers, and sepia for the golds. The loin cloth was a mix of baal red and sepia with a drop of blood red in it since baal red is really more pink then red.

How do you go about mixing the washes? An eye dropper and an empty paint pot?
I think I will be trying this one the Skaven I have been meaning to start painting, but have not been up to.
Might even try it on my Crisis Suits.
EDIT/UPDATE:
Tried it out on 3 clanrats to test and really like the results. I can't figure out how to attach the images though. Too big I think. No idea how to go about shrinking them.

Think I got the pics sorted now. These are my first three attempts at doing some clan rats.

Here's an undead model. Super easy but feels a bit messy...
I'll give you a rundown:Wow, he looks great. Did you do 100% wash or did you use normal paints as well?
First white primer, one coat of Badab Black.
Skin: 2 layers of Ogryn Flesh on all fleshy/furry parts. Any mess-ups were repainted with thinned Skull White, then washed with Badab Black, then Ogryn flesh again.
Hooves and Horns: only one coat of Badab Black.
Fur: on top of the skin mix one coat of Devlan Mud.
Eyes: just a dot of Skull White. I decided against painting pupils, although I could have. Makes them more menacing.
Armour and Pistol: 2 coats of a 7/3 mix of Thraka Green and Devlan Mud.
Loincloth and Power Coil of the pistol: 2 coats of Asurmen Blue. I lightly drybrushed the power coil with Skull white as it got too dark.
Sword and Feathers: 2 coats of a mix of 30% Devlan Mud (for the flowing qualities) and 70% Red Ink (Baal Red is the only Wash I don't have). Feathers got a light drybrushing with Blazing Orange.
Gems: same mix as sword and feathers, highlighted with Fiery Orange and a light dot of Skull white.
Gold: heavily thinned Shining Gold. Washed twice with Gryphonne Sepia. The Chest Eagle turned out too dark, so I drybrushed it with a mix of Shining Gold and Mithril Silver.
Iron: heavily thinned Chainmail. Washed with Badab Black.
The more normal members of his squad got boots in chaos black (I was too lazy for washes), highlighted with Shadow Grey and I painted their pouch belts in Scorched Brown, highlighted with Bestial Brown (I had messed them up with the green wash, so I just went for a covering coat instead of white and washes).

One of them I did no drybrushing and the other two I did.
Should be noted, that they had already been based black once with citadel spray. I had painted a couple for a Mordheim game (can't find the models though).
So I was spraying white citadel paint over top of them being already based black. When I went to do my big batch of 15 I did no drybrushing and I really like the look of them. Especially how vibrant their tails came out with a couple washes of Baal Red right over the white.
So for these I had a black coat that was already there, put a white coat on top. Then one wash of Badab Black (except on the tail). Ogryn Flesh for their skin was two coats. Asurmen Blue for the clothing was two coats. The metal is heavily watered down Mithril Silver. Just one coat. Then washed over all that with one coat of Badab Black. The tails were done with two coats of Baal Red. The hafts of the spears and the dirt on the base took a couple coats of Devlan Mud.

Wow, many thanks for posting this technique... can't wait to get home and try it on my BfSP Dwarfs!![]()
Just did a new boar boy for my 40K snakebite army. I'm pretty happy with it.
the fur is one coat devlan mud, the boar skin is one coat ogryn flesh done before the fur dried to create a bit of a blend. The tusks and hooves are sepia with a white highlight. The ork skin is two coats thraka green, the pants are two coats devlan mud, the belts are a mix of badab black and chaos black, the armor is watered down chain mail and then a coat of badab black after it dries. The gold horns were sepia over the silver. The teef were sepia with a white highlight. The white cloth wrist bands and ankle bands were left un-painted.

can't wait to try this one a corsair tonight!!!
I'd tried a very similar technique a while back to make quick green nids but stupidly gave up before I got the hang of it.
Having seen just how could it can turn out when done well I shall give it another go.
Thanks for for sharing and the inspiration!
i use leviathen purple for my nids flesh, tempted to try a wash for the sales too to make them even quicker to paint

Great thread, and I too may consider painting my mini's this way from now on!
Some questions, if you please,
But what did you use for the fatigues?
Also, given your comments on reds, what would you recommend for a Blood Ravens color scheme, and from your Ultramarines, what about Thousand Sons?
@Nicho, did you use paint on those bone plates, or more washes?
Really like the effect of plain levithan purple on those nids. Great color scheme.
Yeah I used khemri brown and dehneb stone ont the scales, if I could get it done with washes would be awesome lol

Um, the fatigues I think was just strait devlan mud. Two coats.
Reds are tricky. When I do red I use a mix of ball red and sepia. Another idea is to mix in just a drop or two of blood red with ball red, but this does change the nature of the wash a bit. I also find myself having to do multiple coats with red. Try different mixes until you find the color you like.
I want to test more on marines now, because to be honest, I haven't had much luck with gray-scale washing marines. So, good luck.
