    Orks by Give_me_a_d

As some of you may already know I have decided to enter the Tale of 40K Painters for the 09-10 year with a number of armies. This is the log for my Orks.

I have been inspired by manyon here, Crube and Sukigod in particular, and the great wealth of stuff for the greenskins, to collect the basis of an army and get it painted up.

So what can you expect over the coming year and the future? Well I'm keeping my cards close to my chest on this one but the teasers could possible give some ideas. Also if you have read my Daemons log recently you may pick up some pointers there.

    So the teasers -
First a big box of Orks-to-be

Next we have Barry. He is the one and only Ork I have painted. The scheme is basic but has a certain charm I think and I'll probably repair the paint job and try to find some buddies for him.

Finally I have a little something from Forgeworld that is the inspiration for a little something for Barry and any mates to ride around in

    As always C&C welcome.

Damn thats alot of orky goodness you have there. You'll have your hands full now. I like the scheme you've chosen, but it does remind me a bit of the american flag . I reckon you should hit the mini with some washes. Devlan Mud on the red, Asurmen blue on the blue and Badab Black on the metals. Just adds a little more depth to it, then you can re-highlight it.

    Looking forward to more.

    Cheers
    Knight

Sknight - Thanks! This paint job dates from about 10 years ago so is rather dated but as you say with some washes etc it should look pretty good.

That is a lot of orks! Its always good to see some old skool models like that guy. He looks like a blood bowl player rather than a 40k Ork! how they have changed! Look forward to seeing more, anymore Old skool?

I haven't forgotten about this thread, honest. The bad news is that as I'm painting my Lord of Change and some Guardians the Orks don't get a look in for painting. The good news is that I've been busy bashing some bits together for some future entries. I've also managed to pick up a friend for Barry - a very similar 'power armoured' Ork. This one has a tube up his nose and his gun down by his side.

To prove I have been applying myself to the Orks I have some pics for you. I was inspired by the ancient Ork dred of yester-year (seen here http://www.solegends.com/citcat911/c...dnoughtz-h.htm) and came up with this -

Its best discribed as a proof of concept (PoC) but I think it has some potential. The bits are 2 Stompa heads for the body and a lobba and deffrolla end for each leg. It is rather supersized but then can any Ork kontrapshon be too big? It would work quite well as a big dred for a Dred mob. Also the legs maybe a little long.

One thing though, I'm unsure about whether to have the body as shown above or as follows and use the fronts of the heads as the back of the body for extra gubbins and worky bits. That would make this a back view -

As every C&C welcome. I will hopefully have another PoC before too long for Barry's transport.

Thats a great start, I really like the look of him!
any idea how you are going to arm him, weaponwise?

    Re: Orks by Give_me_a_d

I did a scale shot with Barry. This guy stands at 10cm tall currently but I think I will reduce the legs a bit. This also shows the potential attachment points for weapons/arms. I'm leaning towards 4 DCCW as Orks are such rubbish shots, but I may make the arms interchangable and do a couple of shooty weapons as well. I was thinking of somehow using the Deffrolla arms as the basis for circular saw type weapons.

I will be putting together some boyz for future months as well soon so I can get on with a trial colour scheme.

That'll be some Dredd... Certainly not too big - as long as the shooty and 'urty bits are a smiliar scale of course.

My only concernis you using 2 stompa heads as a conversion - you made of money?

I like the idea of having the 2 openings to the back for you to add more internal gubbinz...

Made of money? No, although I'm not as hard up as when I was a student. I've just made use of http://www.battlewagonbits.co.uk/ that has the Stompa bits. I certainly don't have 2 headless stompas lying around (Wish I had!)

    Done more on the Dred.

Here Barry is checking out the progress. This shows the beefed up joint for the leg and the shortness. This brings the body down by about 8mm, which isn't all that much but looks better.

This second shot shows where I've trimmed the top of the lobba base so the attachment to the body can be lower.

    C&C welcome.

Orks are always a great army to watch grow. Good luck, and look forward to seeing your crazy army be built

    Re: Orks by Give_me_a_d

Having not done any painting last month for the Orks I need to start to catch up. To get things started I've done some work on a Deffkopta. This is a simple addition of a bigbomm made from a marauder drum, the cross piece of a slottabase sprue and a shoulder pad. I decided to replace the wire nearby as they were getting in the way a bit. It pretty thin wire I've used so I may replace it with something a little thicker, but this at least shows what I'm going for. The base is ready for under coating.

    C&C welcome.

    Re: Orks by Give_me_a_d

I have some progress to show.

Here are a couple of boyz that I've done some test skin on. Both use a variation of a 'washes' recipe I found on the-Waaagh.com, which in turn was inspired by John Blanche's recipe from White Dwarf. Left is Bleached Bone highlight over Calthan Brown then 2 washes of Thraka Green. Right is Bleached Bone with Ogrn Flesh wash and then Thraka wash.

While the right one has some nice variation in colour and is quite skin-like, it is not green enough to my mind. So I think I prefer the one on the left, but I'll try a couple more recipes to try to come up with a good looking but simple scheme for the skin. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The Deffkopta is coming along, but I'm quietly ignoring Crube's comment about the size of my Bigbomm. So far I've done some base colours and a Boltgun Metal drybrush and so far I think its looking alright. I'll be going over some of the metal and none metal bits and obviously the pilot (once I've got the skin sorted).

    As always C&C welcome.

Looking good so far. Of the two testers, I prefer the one on the right so I hope you don't mind me stealing it for my next Ork army.

By all means loot away. I may try again with that method as it is just stupidly easy. I think the problem was that I didn't get a consistent coat of green wash so it didn't look green enough in places.

Anyway the news is not good. I've been ill and away for a short while so I've not finished the Deffkopta. This means I'm jokering this month in the Tale. Still it might give me a chance to get some gretchin painted up as well as finishing the kopta.
