Thread: The Dragon's Den

  1. #101

    Re: The Dragon's Den

I'm not dead! Well, not quite at any rate. After some time away from the hobby I'm trying to back into it and though my posts will probably not be frequent they should at least be more than one a year!

Anyway, I do not come empty handed so may I present Technomage Davidian Lamnos. There a few little bits that need some attention with greenstuff, but otherwise he's done.

Davidian is wearing a modified suit of power armour with a mechadenrite suite integrated in the armour's backpack, currently he has two of the mechadendrites configured as manipulators, one as a laspistol and one as an complex omni-tool/sensor package. In his right hand he wields a staff of a design commonly seen amongst the Dark Mechanicus while mounted on his left wrist is an advanced plasma blaster, presumed to be his own design.

Thanks very much for the comments guys!
Unfortunately no update today. I had been planning to do some painting, but (not entirely unexpectedly I suppose!) when I got my paints out I found that they were all beginning to dry out, so in the end I just spent a few hours going through all of them, adding some more fluid and mixing them thoroughly. On the bright side it does mean that they should all now be fine next time I come to them!

    Re: The Dragon's Den

Having gone through fixing up all my paints back in May I've now been doing a bit of painting. I've managed to get a regime set up such that I do an hour or so of painting after work most days and did a bit more today. Anyway they're not quite done yet obviously but I thought I'd show you the results of the painting I've done this week on a couple of Chaos objective markers I made some time ago.

First up we have a pile-'o-guard-heads around a Chaos star with a Khornate symbol.

Next we have an unfortunate Guardsman that managed to let himself be captured alive, and was promptly crucified for his troubles, with a couple of former colleagues supplying some extra decoration.

As I said not quite done, I still need to do the armour, the ground and a few more details but I think they are coming along quite nicely so far, and are a fitting tribute to the Dark Gods!

The objective markers are now done, they just a quick spray of purity seal when they're dry and a dab of gloss varnish on any wet blood.

There are a few things that didn't quite turn out as I'd intended, one of the footprints in front of the pile of heads became a bit of a splodge and I'm not entirely sure about the static grass - I think I need to invest in some different colours perhaps, but overall I'm relatively pleased with them.

On a side note does anyone know of any good places on the web for hosting photos? Photobucket is just getting more and more annoying, I find the interface for editing photos totally unusable these days.

Loving these objective counters! I see someone finaly found a use for the "shouting sargeant" head

    Re: The Dragon's Den

Thanks Demoulius, I did indeed find a good use for the shouting sergeant I don't often use them in my Guard (I prefer the sergeants to have helmets) so it was good to have an excuse to use one, there are several in the pile for the same reason.

Anyway now that summer has very definitely come to an end and the weather is encouraging me to stay inside I've been doing some more modelling.
I've always to try making a Vengeance class grand cruiser by mashing together a Chaos cruiser and an Imperial one, partly because that looks like what the original designer did! and partly because the metal ones are rather expensive. So here's my attempt

It turned out fairly well I think, though there are definitely some things I will change when I make it's sister ship, I also think the keel might be a little over large.

After doing the greenstuff on the prow I of course had some left over, though not that much today, so I made it into a little mushroom that will go on someones base at some point.

That vengeance is sweet, but then I remember lurking in this thread when you first posted your sprue-based ships. Very inspiring they were too. I ended up making quite a few scratch build/heavily converted bfg ships thanks to this thread. Apologies if this plug is too shameless, but I've just posted my Necron conversions in my general log and I'm hoping to photo my transports, defence monitors and Tau scratchbuilds over the next few days. So if you wanted to see what you inspired I'd be delighted if you dropped by!

    Re: The Dragon's Den

That's a pretty cracking scratch build for a grand cruiser! Might want to sharpen the prow a bit, although I actually like the large keel. Gives it a distinct profile.

Thanks guys. See your thread for some comments Aurelius. I was intentionally going with a more rounded look for the prow as the Vengeance series ships don't have the armoured prow that later Imperial ships do, although it does look a little blob like in that 3rd photo... it isn't quite so much of a blob in real life!

Ey oop. lad! Nice to see you've been up to some of the old magic!

I like the terrain piece overall - at first I wasn't too sure about your basing but upon closer inspection it seems to work. Can't help wondering if a layer of sand over the plastic base would have helped give it some texture though... However, I still like it! Are you going to make up any more like this, seems a shame to have just the one desecration

And dammit I'm envious of that grand cruiser. Very cool indeed! I want to do one more converted grand cruiser myself and this just makes me want to do it sooner!

    Re: The Dragon's Den

So I've been having a bit of a re-organization of all my 40k bits and pieces, which amongst other things produced an absolute mountain of sprue. Knowing that even sprue can have it's uses I am loathe to just through it away, but if I do nothing with it the re-organization will be pointless, so I've been cutting it up and making a few things.

First up we have a Xenos battlecruiser:

Originally I was intending it to be a large Imperial transport ship, but as I was putting it together it started looking much more martial, so I decided to convert it to a warship. I'm not sure exactly which race it should belong to, probably one of the minor xenos races who are only mentioned in passing like the Fra'al.

I've been toying with the idea of making a model of part of a hive city (at BFG scale, roughly 1:25,000) for a while, and it occured to me that this would be an excellent use for the sprue mountain. So far we have this building

which at 19cm/4.75km tall will be the tallest building in the hive. I'm not sure how big a section of the hive I'll be able to make, I'll see how many buildings I can make from the sprue mountain (or at least how many I build before getting bored!), but this one alone is about 400m across at the base.

Very curious how that hive city will turn out! I was thinking of building something similar a little while back.

I did say sprue mountain, in fact here is a picture of it:

the box it is sitting in is an old Tyranid battleforce box.

Hope it gives you some inspiration!

No new sprue buildings today though, instead I was putting together a few thing for my Imperial Guard. Mostly not too exciting but I thought people might be interested in these very simple little conversions:

A couple of RPG-7s (plus spotter) to make my missile launchers a little more varied.

I think what I'm very interested in at the moment is how you will paint the hive city, will be rather a challange to add all that detail to the structures.

The RPGs are an interesting concept. Can't help thinking that using hunter killer missile 'heads' might look a little better though? Not that I have any real life experience of RPGs or anything :S
