Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

Well here we are folks! One year down the line and we're nearly there! This is the last thread to post up your completed To40KP army. I think we can dispense with the 7 day "clear period" and just switch everything over this time, as I'm sure that we'll all need some extra time this month.

I think it would be best to leave this open until the end of August at least.

For those of you who don’t know what the Tale of Painters is, look here, or sign up to the new Tale here!

I think you all know what goes in your monthly post so I won't bother copying the instructions across again. I look forward to seeing your finished armies sometime over the next month!

    Hugs and kisses,

    McMullet

    TOTAL ARMY SIZE: 2016 POINTS

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
'...the Boneheadz family of Death Skulls once overran and plundered an Imperial penal colony, and wore fragments of convict clothing printed with black arrows for generations afterwards.' - Waaargh The Orks!

    BUILD/CONVERSION:
The Boyz were straight from the sprue.

    PAINTING:
    Ork Skin: Knarloc/Thraka/Camo
    Face: Enchanted/Asurmen/Ice
    Teef: Dheneb/Ogryn/Bone
    Eyes: Mechrite
    Pants: Chaos/Badab/Adeptus Battlegrey
    Top: Astronomican/Badab
    Straps: Adeptus/Badab
    Metal: Boltgun/Badab/Mithril

The first colour is the basecoat, the second is a wash and the third is a drybrush.

    BASING:
Piece of squig-cake. Simply painted Vomit Brown then covered with Citadel Sand straight from the Tub.

    STILL TO DO:
    Nothing.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Finishing the Tale with a 2000 point army without using a Joker!
Lows: As expected, having to paint another 20 Boyz was a bit dull.

Next month, I'm gonna go crazy and start the next Tale by adding another 2000 points worth of Orks (Nobz, Grotz, Stormboyz, Battlewagons and a Stompa)!

Last month... And I made it! Whoa. So, BFG gets the first go. I think the ork post is more impressive. After all, we've seen quite enough BFG ships from me already, haven't we? Sorry about the blurriness on the fleet pics, I don't have a tripod. But you get the gist of it from the pic.

    Imperial Navy:

Three firestorms for 120 points. Taking me to a finishing total of 2075 points. Got a bit more than I planned, since escorts come three to a blister and it'd be a shame to paint only two per go.

    The fleet!

    Chaos:

Three idolators for 120 points. Total's at 2040. Same thing with the escorts here.

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

Now what's better to finish the tale with than the biggest weapon in the ork army list, a great gargant? It's a total of 850 points of stompy fun and a kickass ride for the warboss, too! That makes my ork army 4100 points.

This thing was a royal pain to assemble, it obviously was designed by an ork. Sheer hell to get that body to fit together. But it was worth it.

Dark and brooding, like a proper goff should be. Here's a size comparison pic, with some marines about to become very flat indeed.

WAAAGH! It takes a proppa warboss to get all those bazillion orks to pose for a group shot. It's a bit better than the BFG shots, since I made a makeshift tripod out of an empty shoebox. Now that's some orky injenjuui- enjinui- er, know-wots.

This tale was sometimes really great and other times felt like a horrid vortex of annoyance that sucked up all my free time. But I love the end results. Now if I had someone to game with...

And even after this is done, I still have a pile of metal and plastic staring at me for another year. Aaaagh!
Take a look at my painting thread!

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

Units painted this month: The remaining half of my Bloodthirster (125pts) and a Herald of Slaanesh (75pts)

Total pts for this month: 200pts
    Jokers: 2 (January & March 09)
    Current Army Size: 2006pts

    Models:
The Bloodthirster is straight out of the box. The Herald is a classic Chaos Champion and a claw is from the Daemonettes' spare icon.

    Painting:
The Bloodthirster was much like the Bloodletters from a while back. The Herald was much the same as the more recent Daemonettes. Details in my daemons log.

    Basing:
Much like what I started with the GUO last month

    Still To Do:
I may tone down the Bloodthirster's gold bits with a wash but other than that these two are finished. While I may have achieved my goal (Yeah!) I still have a number of pieces to add to the Daemons so the main 'Still To Do' is join next years Tale.

    Highs And Lows:
No lows really. The Herald's swords came out quite well, as did the lace collar etc. I am quite pleased with the Bloodthirster and I'm glad I finished him as it means all the models are finished.

    Pictures:

    The Whole Lot -

    Next time on TO40KP...
While this is the end of 'Volume One' there are a number of big guys and several units to convert up so see you all in a months time for the start of 'Volume Two' in the shape of another big daemon – my Lord of Change.

Just a quick one to say congratulations to everyone who has posted. I will come back & leave more comments ASAP. I'm hoping to post my stuff in the next week or so though I'll only have 1800 points done so I may hold out to try & get the extra 200 done by the end of August (although I do want to start my new TO40KP stuff).

Darnoks 40K Daemons - Painting of June and July

Hi there, I'm still alive. For now I just want to present what I have painted the last weeks, there will be a final group shooting later - right now my army is spread over two places.

I must say that the final result doesn't look too bad, even though I'm not perfectly happy with it. But painting the GUO was not real fun in certain stages - especially some of the detailing was quite a pain. In the end he is a proper Greater Daemon, and that is all that counts. The slime-trail was added at the last minute, because the base looked plain boring, so it is just paint and glossy varnish; it was inspired by give_me_a_d, but his version is definetely better. I hope for similar things during the next Tale, and I mean the motivation, not necessarily me doing it worse.

Forgive me the pictures, I think I will never learn that aspect...

lone pilgrim's Blood Angels: July 2009

Unit 1: Land Raider Crusader (Extra armour, hunter killer missile, stormbolter)
Cost: 142.5 points (half total points as only 2nd half painted)

    Unit 2: Chaplain Lemartes
    Cost: 125

TOTAL PAINTING FOR JULY: 267.5 POINTS

    TOTAL ARMY SIZE: 2000/2000 POINTS

BUILD/CONVERSION: Old school Crusader with metal and plastic parts. Lemartes straight out of the blister.

    PAINTING:

He was a pretty easy model to paint; I just followed what I did previously when painting Chaplain Diavolo. I did dial the blue armour highlights back a bit though, which shows in the photograph. I'm particularly pleased with the skull helmet which I blended through six stages of highlights.

The shiny patches around the transfers are the spots where I've painted varnish so that the transfer is sitting on a flat surface. I'll be re-varnishing the whole vehicle and that will disguise the glossy bits.

There are still some additions I'd like to make to this model eventually - weathering for instance. My Crusader is in a similar position to my regular Land Raider in that it has no battle damage or churned up mud and dust on it's tracks. This means they stand out from my other vehicles like my Rhino, Predator and Razorback. I'll probably return to both vehicles at some point and weather them together.

I had some modelling issues with my Crusader.

The assault cannons are glued in place as one of the holes in the weapon wasn't formed properly so it wouldn't take the pin. Also the front ramp mechanism has ceased to work (this has also happened on my other Land Raider). That means I can't open the ramp very far, nor can I shut it fully. I guess God doesn't want anyone to see the fully painted interior.

The whole model feels fragile. As I've mentioned before it is oddly weighted and the Hurricane bolters feel like they could come apart very easily. Coupled with the plastic/metal combo of the multi-melta I'm not confident that this model would travel in one piece.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Actually getting the whole army finished.
Lows: Some modelling issues with the Crusader.

Anyway, despite some reservations, I have achieved my goal of painting a full 2000 point Blood Angel army in a year!

I'd like to thank McMullet for having the patience and stamina to run the show for the past year and I'd also like to thank everyone who commented on my painting over the 12 months. The feedback and support was excellent.

I would also like to apologise to those painters whose work I didn't post about in the last few months when I was straining to get my own painting done. I'll look over the threads later in the weekend and be sure to leave my comments.

Now where is my green paint for next years Orks?

    TOTAL PAINTING: 3 Marines - 45 points

TOTAL ARMY SIZE: 1,850 points (ish)

    BACKGROUND/THEME: Pre-Heresy World Eaters.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Same mix of bitz as my previous tactical marines

    PAINTING: As before...

STILL TO DO: Spray of varnish for the whole army

HIGHS AND LOWS: Getting last 3 models painted for this army - I did them all in the last 24 hours after a lack of inspiration for the last month. Pleased with the army as a whole and I will post a decent army shot when I come back to do final comments at the end of the month.

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

    UNIT: 6 Terminators(220 with gear) and 2 Rhinos(40+40)

    TOTAL PAINTING THIS MONTH: 300

TOTAL ARMY SIZE: 2155(2075 excluding the three extra weapon marines)

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
Recently fallen Chapter named Descendants of Sanginius that has taken up Khorne as their patron god. A bit more sneakier then regular khorne crazed killers and they actually try to use tactics to win. Doing mercernary work and employing modified equipment to get the job done. The first squad is supposed to represent a more ranged like unit with extended barrels, this second squad is a more melee get stuck in, khornelike unit. Third unit, was supposed to represent a more mid-range unit that was giving fire support.

Started to flesh out the chapter more and more and my symbol will be done soon and applied to transfers. They will be Blood Angels Successor(I already had thought of that) and they will be following a Daemon Prince that will look like Sanguinus, I will also be adding a Death Company using the Khrone Berzerker rules but this will probably be done after the tale. I was going to leave the army at 2000p, but the recent inspiration has made me want to bring them to 3000p fully painted with a few Blood Angelsish flavours here and there!

    BUILD/CONVERSION:
I had some help from Bloodsbane(was in the tale earlier), he helped with the cloth on the termies. Did the rest myself!

    PAINTING:
Was fun, finished everything I had planned! I did bring my paints and brushes with me on my vaccation since I find it kinda relaxing to paint. Paid off and I got it all done!

    BASING:
Sand - Chaos Black - Earth - Bleached Bone - Wolfs Gray - White - Grass and snow!

    STILL TO DO:
Symbol figured out, need to have it made and then applied to transferpaper! No update yet, But will get done!

    HIGHS AND LOWS:

Highs: Finshing up the terminators, I'm really more happy with the Rhinos tho. Thought it would be the other way around.

Low: I feel that I could re-do some stuff in my army better, but at this moment I neither have the will or the time to do it. Maybe in the future!

    PICTURES:

    First three terminators:

    All six of them:

All ten off the termies(not all painted this month):

I have to postpone my final post for a day or two. I did base the whole army and mostly painted the remaining models, but there are still 2 or 3 hours to go before they are finished and then there are pictures to take. But I will get them posted this weekend and then write comments.

Unhappy Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

Well done to everyone who's been more diligent than me this month! I am somewhere around 3/4 through my final block of painting. Hope to get it done this week so I can make a start on next year.

misterboff: As ever, you have managed to just churn these Orks out at the required rate - I can believe you managed to force your way through another 20 Boyz! The army looks fantastic, far too big to even bother counting (as Orks should be) and with a simple but effective colour scheme. Ideal for a proper horde army. I look forward to it getting even bigger next year!

Discord: I know how you feel about the "obligations" of the tale being a bit annoying sometimes (it's worse for me, since I can't really drop out ). But it's great to see a finished army that you'd never have gotten around to otherwise.
    - BFG: Great to see those fleets finished off. Makes me want to get started on my Chaos fleet! The yellow lights/windows are a nice little touch which I'll have to be stealing from you.
    - Epic: Fantastic Gargant - Properly dark and Goffik. He looks like he means business. The highlights on the black are really nice.

give_me_a_d: Good idea to save those two to the end! I especially like the 'Thirster, the metals are great as they are imho.

Darnok: I think he looks great! Really nice mix of colours on the model, it's very vibrant without being too bright and sunny. Interesting without losing that feeling of decay and disease. I agree the slime trail could've turned out better, but it's lear what it is and it definitely adds to the model.

lonepilgrim: Great work as ever! Shame the Crusader didn't go together perfectlyI guess it'll just need a customised slot in the case if you have to move it. For the doors, it might be worth just breaking the mechanism properly - just force the doors in opposite directions until the link breaks - and then magnetising the join between them. It's a bit of work and the top half won't hold itself open, but at least people will be able to seen inside...

Jim: Nice easy finish for you there! Those last three guys look as good as the rest.

Häxjägare: Those ten Termies look fearsome all together! I like how the bases came out. Nice work on the Rhinos too.

@Everyone else: In your own time. Feel free to drop in and say hello even if you dropped out earlier on.

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

    McMullet's Diminutive Greenskins: Final month!

Gunfortress with Mekboy (Zzzap gun): 185 points
½ x (Big Blitz Brigade with 2 Soopaguns): 175 points
Warboss stand for Goof Warband: Nothing! Should've done him months ago when I did the warband.

TOTAL PAINTING FOR AUGUST: 360 points

    Month 1: Joker 1
Month 2: 512.5 points (corrected due to changed army list)
    Month 3: 360 points
    Month 4: 442.5 points
    Month 5: 350 points
    Month 6: 325
    Month 7: Joker 2
    Month 8: 430 points
    Month 9: 550 points
Month 10: 620 points (earning back Joker 2)
    Month 11: Joker 2 (again!)
    Month 12: 360 points

TOTAL PAINTING: 3950 points (target: 4000 points)

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
    Background: Orks. Theme: Orks!
I'm trying to stick to the old fashioned, 2nd ed-era look for them, besides that it's just an army. From looking at Epic tactics discussions, it's pretty clear that I have nowhere near enough troops in my army, but really I've just been painting whatever I felt like (which means not infantry).

    BUILD/CONVERSION:
The Gunfortress is built from a standard model, with the front gun replaced with a bit tacked on from the Mega-Gargant, guitar string, bit of a Shokk Attack Gun, green stuff. The Gunwagons in the Blitz Brigade are mainly kitbashed from standard parts.

    PAINTING:
    White undercoat for everything.
Deathskullz use enchanted blue, "black" bits are painted very dark grey, some then detailed with boltgun metal. The Gunfortress is Scar Red with some Bloody Red highlights, otherwise similar. Zzap gun is painted from Tin up to gold, the glowy part is enchanted blue with a lazy-**** attempt at reverse highlighting. All washed with a mix of badab black and smokey ink.
The Warboss stand is mainly the same colours was the Gunfortress, washed with just Badab Black.

    BASING:
Painted to look like a Mars-scape (terracotta, parasite brown, fiery orange and khaki).

    STILL TO DO:
    Nowt... Possibly.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
    Highs: FINISHED!
Lows: I think the new plastic Soopagun is so much bigger than the Spleenrippa model I used for the other one that they don't look like the same unit...

    PICTURES

    Blitz Brigade:

With the stuff I did a couple of months back:

Anyone have thoughts on the two Soopaguns? I'm thinkking of chopping the "flash suppressor" thing from my homebuilt one, to bring the gun's size into line with the Spleenrippa (also at the back, adjacent to it).

    Gunfortress:

    Warboss:

The whole army (clickable, this is a BIG picture)!

I found my post from way back at the start of the tale where I planned out my list - I thought it would be interesting to make a comparison...

Big Goff Warband with Warboss, mounted in Gunfortresses and Battlefortresses - In reality: Big warband with Warboss, mounted in Gunfortresses. Not far off!
Normal Evil Sunz Warband in a Landa - Spot on!
Normal Blood Axe Warband in a Wagons - Never happened. Though I did do a Deathskull Warband, so the same formation, painted differently, in the Battlefortress.
Two 'Uge Blitz Brigades, one Dethskullz and one Evil Sunz, both with 2 Supagunz - Not quite, they were both Big Blitzes, not 'Uge.
Normal Evil Sunz Kult of Speed - Yup!
3 Bad Moonz Stompaz - Yup, with 6 Dreads as backup.
Normal Evil Sunz Blitz Brigade with a Zzap Gun - Nowhere near doing that, though I have the models for another Big Blitz with 2 Zzaps which will be done soon.
1 Gargant (Probably Goff) - Gargant is right... It was Bad Moon though.

So, all in all, I did most of what I expected to. Some of the stuff was from a different tribe than I expected, but I still made the same formations. The only things I didn't do at all were the Wagons for a Warband, and the Zzap blitz. Instead, I did some Dreads and Fighta-bommaz.

I'd say that shows the value of planning, and also the importance of not following your plans rigidly...

Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to this year's tale, both for your own inspirational paintng and converting, and for the support, advice and camaraderie you've given each other and myself. I hope to write something a bit longer when all the stragglers check in in the next week or so.

I'm at present working my way through the Forgeworld Khorne Daemon Prince, hopefully will get enough time to finish it over the weekend. Real life has been getting in the way of 40K time for the last couple of months, so it'll be good to get this boy finished. I'll post up some pics of him and the full army when I get him done.

Well done to everyone who made it this far, and good luck to those setting off on the coming years tale.

I am one of said "stragglers". My tyranids are about 95 % done, but I am taking my time with them. Just a few minor details left, but I want to make these "pop" a little.

Great entries so far. I will comment on each and every one after my first post. Then I have to finish the Guards centre-piece. Looks like I will have to joker for the first month of the upcoming tale.

Btw, McMullet, that army shot is really nice. Mental note to self: post really large picture for final army shot.

    Sheena Easton's Fabulous Orks

    Painting For July
    * 1 x Looted Wagon with 'Ard Case, 2 x Big Shootas, Skorcha, Stikkbomb Chukka, Grot Riggerz, Armour Plates. 90 points
    Total 1003 Points (/ 1000 Points) + 2 Jokers

    Building / Conversion:
After my initial attempts at building one from my bitz box failed, I purchased a newest design Chimera from a fellow Warseer. Hacked out various bits using clippers to represent battle damage. Added a classic Skorcha to the turret, removed the front of the Multi Laser & Heavy Bolter, replacing them with the front of a Shoota & Buggy Multi-Melta respectively. Added various accessories from Bitz Box / Boxed Set. such as shields, icons, packs, weapons, fuel cans. The Rigger is a Gnoblar with a Goblin head and an old Gorkamorka blowtorch from one of the Buggy / Trakk kits, the Stikkbomb Chukka is a Snotling from the old NG Plastic box with a stikkbomb.

    Painting
The usual basic and rather sloppy work, using the same techniques on the metal as used on the previous two entries, used the same techniques on the browns and added a bright blue "camo" pattern. Damaged areas were painted black, Gunmetal, Mithril Silver and washed with purple and mud ink
    Basing
    none required

    Still to do
Small details such as the exit points on the weapons, making the damaged areas a bit darker. May swap the Multi Laser for the other Multi-Melta barrel though as I don't think it works.

Highs - Fun to convert and paint, looks suitable "Orky" (especially the Stikkbomb Chukka / Rigger...) and the paint job is a vast improvement from my first Looted Wagon (Month #1), finally getting the 1,000 points finished
Lows - Couldn't find the time to get this finished earlier, don't think the Multi Laser as Big Shoota works so will probably have to replace it, being unable to fit a gravestone on it

    Pictures:

    Overall:
    1,003 Points / 1,000 Points + 2 Jokers used
Still To Do: Bases, some small details
Highs: Getting finished eventually, rediscovering converting and being able to combine various different parts in unusual combinations, painting gradually improving towards my old standard
Lows: Having to use Jokers, poor paint jobs on some models (especially my first Looted Wagon)

    Army Shot:

    jpobrich's Dark Angels

In the last month, I've moved house, gone on vacation, gone to a conference and am going on my honeymoon tomorrow. With all the preparation, I didn't have time to finish the last of my intended Marines. Ah well. I have attached a pic of the army at the end of this Tale.

I have two entries in the 09/10 Tale. The first will be a continuation of my Dark Angels (now somewhere around 5k painted), with an emphasis on support vehicles, some more veterans, Deathwing and perhaps Ravenwing.

The second entry will be Orks. Specifically, I will be working on an Evil Sunz army. I only have about 1,000 points planned for the army for now, but I may end up doing more if time allows.

Best wishes, and I hope to see you all in the 09/10 Tale.

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

I just wanted to pop by and say that this thread and its sister are both brilliant threads and the overall armies and paintjobs achieved here are superb and something to be very proud of. I've followed both threads and feel that everyone in these threads deserves a hearty pat on the back, both for their effort and the inspiration these threads give out.

@misterboff - that Ork horde looks really impressive. Seeing a whole deathskulls army is quite a treat.

@Discord - great work on both those fleets. My own imperial fleet has taken some inspiration from yours and since then I've been reworking all the bows to make them stand out neatly like yours. I've also been working on an epic ork horde and have struggled to get the right image for my gargant. Having seen yours I might just rip the idea as I do love it a lot. Great work.

@give_me_a_d - nice daemonic horde. I am a big fan of the blood letters as they are much more subtle and more gothic than the standard job and I feel compliments the army very well. Looking forward to volume 2.

@darnok. I do like the orange pustules on that guo. Gives it a very distinct and unusual character and adds to the effect rather than detracts from it. Looking forward to the full shot.

@lonepilgrim - You've actually changed my opinion of blood angels. I've never been a fan of them (must something to do with interchapter rivalry...) but these really do look stunning. Are you picking up the Space hulk set? I'd love to see your take on the marines inside. I hope mine match up to the standard that you have set in my mind that I now want to achieve.

@Jim - its always good to see pre-heresy armies and yours is really well done. Especially as it now is a whole army. You've really hit the balance between gore torn and battle weary, without going over the top and drenching the models. Also, good job on those pre heresy terminators, the shoulder pads in particular I've never got to work right. Well done.

@Häxjägare - nice themed chaos army. Its a very well done just fallen renegade chapter and I think the sanguinus daemon prince will really add to the army (and maybe even hint at what cause the fall in the first place). As a whole, I feel that it really is quite stunning and I'm surprised that you aren't more of a fan of your terminators, I think they really are brilliantly done.

@McMullet - I love that gun fortress, really well done and the blue sets its off perfectly to my eye. I lovce the little unique touches to your ork horde such as the crashed lander and the custom flyers which is exactly how they should be. Also congrats on successfully running another years to40kp. I really don't know how you manage it but great stuff and as I said at the start, really inspirational.

@Sheen Easton - Great conversion of a looted truck/chimera, really looks suitably orkified and is a great overall effect. And good looking horde you got there, nice to see the various generations of models all together as a nice consistent horde. Well done.

@jpobrich - you ninja'd your army in on me there, but i9ts such nice group of dark angels that i had to comment. The white shoulder trims really set these guys off and as a force they are a real treat for the eyes. Congratz again and I look forward to seeing your work in tofp's this year.
