Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

    OK folks, comment time

@ misterboff - as I've said before I love Deathskulls & your army is very impressive, looking forward to seeing what you do next year (the Stompa in particular)

@ discord - excellent stuff, especially the Imperial Fleet as I really like the colour scheme that you've chosen. That Stompa is very cool.

@ give_me_a_d - i love that Slaanesh model so well done on giving it a paint job to do it justice & a very impressive looking army

@ Darnok - absolutley awesome GUO, the slime trail on the back certinaly gives it that extra bit of details but where's the army shot...

@ lone pilgrim - absolutely gorgeous army, make sure you come back to show us a pic once you've done the weathering & I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do for your Orks in the 09/10 tale

@ jim - well done on completing the army & looking forward to seeing the final pics

@ Haxjagare - awesome stuff & a very nice looking army, certainly looks like one to be feared on the battlefield (especailly for my girly Tau, they no like close combat!)

@ McMullet - loving the army shot & some excellent stuff again this month

@ Sheena Easton - congratulations on finishing & a cool conversion once again

@ jpobrich - you certainly have been a busy man, congratulations on the wedding & hope you have a good honeymoon. excelletn stuff this year so very much looking forward to seeing what you do in the next tale

My stuff has been coming along although quite slowly (mainly because I've started painting my first marine squad for the 09/10 tale) but I finished the first highlight on my Broadsides which is a real pain so I've finished most of the main bulk work & now just have the other highlights which luckily don't take too long. Will try & get the Hammerhead finished by the end of the month but if I don't I will post what I have done.
My Various Painting Projects, just added Kobold Gougers and Dreadball RefBot. Please check it out and leave feedback which is all gratefully received

Miniatures bought this year: 401 (Bloody Kickstarter) Miniatures painted this year: 42

Well I haven't lifted a finger since last month apart from making some scenic bases for my gargoyles. No pics of course.

Congratulations to everyone who completed the tale with their points target attained.

Thanks for all the kind comments and the not-to-harsh criticism. It's a wonderful feeling to have an army almost completely painted. They look fantastic on the tabletop too.

And a big thanks and well done to McMullet.

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

A couple of pictures of my Khorne Daemon Prince. He is the final piece of the army for now. I will add a few more units and models to it over time, but for now that's it.

I posted a full army shot a couple of months back if you'd like to see the whole lot of them. Comes to about 2500.

    Painting:
Same as all the other Khorne units. Black primer, Base of scab red, then drybrushing with blood red and highlighting with valejo orange. As usual there were washes with baal red throughout to smooth the transitions a bit. I did use a badab black wash at one stage to get a bit more shading in.
Armour/metalwork was brazen brass, shining gold, burnished gold, boltgun metal and mytheral silver as a final highlight. Copious washes of gryphonne sepia were used to once again disguise my ineptitude.
Leather was done with a scorched brown base, snakeskin leather, plague brown, bleached bone. I used devlin mud as a wash for these parts.

    Modelling:
Actually went together pretty well. Had to use a heatgun on his left arm to match up the arm and hand on the weapon. I might do a bit mor to the base, skulls and decapitated heads if I can get round to it.

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

As promised I'm back to comment on other painters work.

@misterboff - That's an impressive looking horde you have there. Given how consistent you've been throughout the Tale this year I can't wait until the end of the next and you can take a photo of the combined army

@Discord - I've never tired of seeing your BFG ships! The colour scheme for the Imperial ships in particular are excellent. I'll be using them for inspiration when I finally get around to painting my own BFG stuff. Your Epic stuff is great too. That's another game I keep meaning to get into. I think Orks suit the scale of the game with the sheer number of models and units in the army. I'd love to paint up matching IG and Orks sometime. Maybe in 2010/2011.

@give_me_a_d - That Bloodthirster will be nasty on the tabletop and the whole force looks suitably impressive. I'd like to see your take on the Tzeentch bird.

@Darnok - The GUO model brings back a lot of nostalgia for me. I have the exact same model and I remember thinking the same thing when I painted it - 'this thing has a crazy amount of detail!' Good job.

@Jim - I really dig your colour scheme and the weathering on the models adds a lot.

@Häxjägare - While I don't approve of your army background (descendants of Sanguinius turned to Chaos? Never! ) I am a big admirer of your colour scheme. You have a very good looking army there.

    @susu.exp -

@McMullet - I love the fact you had to take your army outside to photograph it. And you still think you don't have enough infantry I also agree with your thoughts on planning. A general outline is a great idea so you have a clear goal, but it also has to have enough wiggle room for a bit of improvisation on the way.

@Sheena Easton - I'm doing Orks for the next tale and I'm seriously worried after seeing your army. It looks like a green wave but it only comes to 1000 points. I'd recommend painting all your bases if you get the chance as it will help to tie in the models as a cohesive army.

@jpobrich - It's a shame you didn't quite finish but given the circumstances that is entirely understandable. I look forward to seeing your Orks in particular next time around.

@kenny3760 - I don't fancy that Marine's chances in the first pic! Seriously nice model in classic Khorne colours. I'd like to see it as part of the full army shot.

Congrats to all those who made it to the end!

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

    Time for some comments:

@ misterboff: the whole army is sensational! Excellent job on the constantly high standard of painting.

@ discord: great fleets, especially how they all tie in together so brilliantly and have such good paint jobs. Love the Epic Orks as well - the Gargant is exquisitely painted (especially the blue eye) though my favourite has to be those fabulous old Stormboyz...

@ give_me_a_d: great too see that daemonic force finished. Excellent work on the Bloodthirster and a great job on the herald, especially with such a simply yet effective conversion.

@ darnok: that GUO is amazing! (and rather disgusting at the same time...). Excellent work and model of the tale for me.

@ lonepilgrim: lovely army and very well painted. Though I just don't like that Lemartes model in general I'm afraid despite the excellent painting by yourself (besides your other Chaplain is my favourite model you have painted).

@ jim: I can't see your pictures for some reason, though I'm sure I saw them before and it looked like more of your excellent work.

@ Häxjägare: I love the Terminators and the overall army is excellent.

@ susu.exp: More good work - can't wait for the army shot.

@ mcmullet: more excellent work with those vehicles and an amazing epic army. I want to steal that Lungbursta...

@ Sheena Easton: Beyond Fabulous! Your painting is as much of a $ucce$$ as Dannii's last single.

@ jpobrich: great overall army. Highlight has to be the Captain though.

@ kenny3760: looks suitable imposing, hope there is an army shot soon.

And a big thanks to those who have commented on my mostly abysmal efforts at painting and my rather Orky conversions, hope to see you all again in the next tale.

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

Having commented that the first month of the new Tale will be something of a marathon to comment on I reminded myself that I hadn't posted any comments here. As we are a select few now I thought it might be nice to dish out some fitting awards. So here goes...

misterboff got things started in fine style with another big unit of boyz. With this addition I'm sure that this Ork horde earns the Most Numerous Army in the Tale Award as the formidable army shot proves.

Discord followed this up with his entries for BFG Imperials & Chaos and Epic Orks. For me, knowing next to nothing about BFG, Discord's ships have been very interesting and it is the former that I have chosen for the Best BFG Force Award.

I followed this with my Bloodthirster and Slaaneshi Herald. Both the Slaaneshi Herald and the GUO were strong contenders but my own personal award for Favourite Model in My Army goes to my Nurgle Daemon Prince.

Hot on my tail was Darnok who finished of his force with a GUO, which is a particular fav, not because of the slime trail which was shamelessly copied from my own GUO, but because of the nurgling on the base whose pose mimics that of the GUO. The award here goes for Best Daemon Army.

lonepilgrim wasn't far behind with his stunning Land Raider Crusader and Chaplin Lemartes. This army is I'm sure you'll agree a worthy winner of the covetted Best Bases Award. Thanks for the comments.

Jim followed this with the final addition of 3 marines. Although a small reinforcement this illustrates just why Jim has won the Most Characterful Army Award.

Not to be out done Häxjägare submitted a substantial force of terminators and rhinos. The judges were particularly impressed with this force throughout the year. It is a worthy winner of the Most Original Chaos Marine Army Award.

susu.exp was the next to post with his little guys. Towards the end of the year this force won its way into the hearts of many. There was never any doubt that this army would win the prestigious Sui Generis Award.

McMullet followed this with his diminutive orks. A very popular army all year, this month proved to be another corker. McMullet is the winner of 2 specialist awards - Best Joker Award for the Great Gargant posted some time ago and the ever popular Best Final Army Shot Award. Also thanks for the comments.

The Ork forces were added to by Sheena Easton's Fabulous Orks. A great final entry of a looted wagon demonstrating just why this army was awarded the Most Fabulous Army Award. Thanks for the comments.

Special mention goes to jpobrich for his Dark Angels, who although didn't post any updates but did gives us a great army shot.

Sureshot05 kicked off the comments in earnest. A worthy winner of the Best Comments by a Non-Tale Warseer Award. I'll just say thanks, I'm very pleased with the Bloodletters.

Then it was Jonahmaul's turn. Thanks, the Herald turned out pretty good.

kenny3760 posted his Khorne Daemon Prince. A very fine army over the year and this last entry wins the Best Forgeworld Model Award.

The most recent poster was -=Lazuli=- with a multitude of mostly Imperial troops. A brilliant array that earns the Out of Nowhere Award.

I'd like to give special mention to the organiser of the Tale McMullet, without whose sterling efforts this would have fallen apart months ago. Also many thanks to everyone who has commented on my work this month and throughout the year it really has been great fun. I will give a thank you in particular to Crube, who has commented on my work and helped no end.

If anyone else turns up there are still Awards to be made up, er I mean won.

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

First of all, well done to everyone who finished the Tale of Painters!

Second of all, good luck to everyone who's continuing/starting again this year!

    Now, some comments from me:

@Discord: All 3 armies are very impressive, and I love that fact that someone has painted more Orks than me! The variety in your Ork horde is great.

@give_me_a_d: I love that classic Slaaneshi model. It's cool that your army draws upon all four of the Chaos Gods, the paint schemes give each power a different feel.

@Darnok: GUO looks gross (in a good way), adding to the appropriately chaotic look of your army.

@lonepilgrim: Bang on 2000 points of excellently painted BA's - congratulations. I'm looking forward to seeing what you make of your Orks this year...

@Jim: Consistently brilliant work. The weathering and gore are incredibly well done.

@Häxjägare: An original colour scheme that looks very effective on the army as a whole. The blue weapons really make the Terminators stand out as an Elite unit.

@susu.exp: A unique army that still manages to look suitably cohesive even with all your conversions.

@McMullet: That's a nice eclectic Ork horde you've got there, but you can't guess which of your clans is my favourite...

@Sheena Easton: A very ramshackle looking force, which is very fitting for your mix of old and new models for your Deathskulls.

@jpobrich: You've done a fantastic job on your army, and there's a fair amount of models for a Space Marine army in my opinion.

@Kenny3760: Wow. I didn't realise how big the FW DP's were, but the paint job is very Khornate and the skulls look awesome.

@-=Lazuli=-: That's a whole lot of painting that you've done there! All to a very high standard too.
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

Well, I'm glad that's over with. Or maybe not, since now I have another army to paint. It never ends!

misterboff, that looks like the start of a proper waaagh. Now do the same in Epic and we're talking. I'd like to see a few deathskully dreads among the infantry, too.

give_me_a_d, hoping to see the Lord of Change soon. Impressive horde, even though I personally don't field mixed gods.

lonepilgrim, you managed to get Lemartes to look good, despite that horrid sculpt. Now there's a feat. The rest of the force is really neat, too.

Häxjägare, that's a nice army. I like how every surface isn't covered in man-sized spikes and skulls, like most chaos armies out there.

McMullet, I love those vehicles. The details are great. I wish my deathskull tanks looked half as good, sadly I did them when I was really fed up with painting. Your army needs more infantry, though. That amount of boyz can't shout a proper waagh yet.

Sheena, good amount of stuff in there. You really need to finish up those bases though, the splotches of white are a bit distracting.

jpobrich, continuing that army is definitely a good idea. The painting looks ace.

Lazuli, those are some impressive guardsmen. The necron horde looks good too.

And the rest of you need to get those army shots up!

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

Phew, this summer just flew by, and here in Sweden, the summer is preciously short but sweet. I have spent these last months finishing my Tyranid army, and I really wanted to accomplish a good instead of a rushed job, so here follows the last update.

    Painted this month: 1025
    Dominatrix Bio-Titan (475)
    Winged Hive Tyrant (100)
    2 Exocrine Bio-artillery (150)
    4 Raveners (125)
    4 Gargoyles (100)
    4 Hormagaunts (75)

    Total painted: 4050

Models/conversions: The Hormagaunts and Gargoyles are straight from the sprues and the Exocrines are straight from the blister.

The Raveners are built the same way as the last batch, serpent body and back plates from 40K Rippers, torso and head from Tyranid Warriors. The head plate is made of brown stuff, and the arms and claws are sculpted from plastic and metal flash. Tyranid Warrior venom cannons are used as death spitters.

The Winged Hive Tyrant was also fun to build. I had to remove the top two arms and replace them with wings. The wings are basically re-shaped old 40K Gargoyle wings with the ugly claws replaced with various claws from the basic Gaunt sprue.

The Dominatrix has had a weird bio-plant added to its base as well as two Termagaunts. I cut off and re-attached them in different angles to make them look more alive, and I think it worked out nice. If I was a serious nutter, I would probably try it on a brood as well.

Painting: I used the same palette as previously, but I also strived to add more contrast, building from darker colours and I think it turned out well. Instead of dark leather, I started from a base of scorched brown/dark leather. My previous green problems were miraculously cured by Vallejo Model Colour: Russian Green, a fantastic base for camouflage green.

I wanted the bio-guns to look like the previous Biovore cannons which I thought turned out well, so I stuck with it on the Dominatrix and the Exocrines. It is basically a mixture of Catachan Green/Khaki, washed with my "dirt" ink wash (Vallejo black green/brown 1:1), and then gradually built up to khaki. If there is one colour I have really enjoyed working with it sure is Khaki. Since it contains both red and green pigments it is truly versatile, and makes it easier for the army to look coherent even though it contains different colour schemes.

    Highs: Reaching the 4000 bar.

    Lows: None really.

Enough talking, here are the pictures:

    Exocrine Bio-artillery:

    Winged Tyrant:

    Gargoyles:

    Hormagaunts (mixed colours):

    Raveners:

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

    Tyranid army-shot:

    The army consists of:

    Independent Swarms:
    Genestealer Brood with Broodlord
    2 Lictor swarms
    Hierophant Bio-Titan
    Harridan Bio-Titan

    Synapse Swarms:
    Dominatrix Bio-titan
    2 Tyranid Warrior Broods
    2 Hive Tyrants
    1 Winged Hive Tyrant
    Infestation Node

    Common Broods:
    5 x Termagaunt Brood
    3 x Hormagaunt Brood
    2 x Gargoyle Brood
    2 x Ravener Brood

    Uncommon Broods:
    3 Malefactor Assault Spawns
    3 Haruspex Assault Spawns
    4 Biovore Bio-artillery
    2 Dactylis Bio-artillery
    2 Exocrine Bio-artillery
    Trygon

My Guards are dug-in at 3650 points, and I intend to finish them, but I really want to get into this year's tale, so I am leaving them for now and plan to return to them in my upcoming Epic plog.

    Here is an army-shot:

    The army consists of:

    Companies
Regimental HQ Company + 2 Mechanized Ogryns + Hydra AA + 3 Hellhounds
Infantry Company + Fire Support Platoon + 2 Ratling Snipers
Leeman Russ Tank Company + Hydra AA
Shadowsword Super-heavy Tank Company + Hydra AA

    Support Formations:
    Bombard Battery
    Manticore Battery
    Sentinel Squadron
    Vulture Squadron

    Allies:
    2 x 2 Imperial Navy Thunderbolt Fighters

    Highs: Another "finished" army.
Lows: Not having time to really finish it off, most noticably the baggage on the Leeman Russes, but also some markings left to do.

So what was planned, but failed to make it into the army: I am currently building a Baneblade, have basecoated 4 Valkyries carrying 8 storm troopers, and have assembled 2 Deathstrike Missile Launchers and 6 Rough Riders.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this year's tale, and I hope to make it through this year's tale as well. Now, for some comments:

@misterboff: That is an enormous army. Apparently, you are a nutter for orks, and I will love following you along this year.

@Discord: I love the Imperial scheme, and I like the attention you pay to the prows, both Chaotic and Imperial, making them really stand out. If I only knew how to play, I would probably start a BFG fleet as well. At least I plan to paint some space ships this year.

Your gargant looks great. Black is a difficult colour to paint, but I think you have added just about the right amount of details and checkers to avoid looking dull or cluttered. Well done. You and McMullet have really made my fingers itch for building an Ork army myself.

@give_me_a_d: I think you have improved your painting this year. I really love the Slaanesh herald, using purples and pinks without looking too bright. Your army looks ace.

@Darnok: I really like your GUO, and it is a shame that you cannot make it this year.

@lone pilgrim: I wish I could paint like that, seriously. Your army looks fantastic.

@Jim: Another fantastic army, full of character and plenty of conversions. It has been a pleasure to follow your progress.

@Häxjägare: A great finish to a great-looking army. I like how your army avoids being too gaudy and remain a little toned down.

@McMullet: A fantastic finish to a great-looking army. I love the Soopa-gun and the new warboss.

@Sheena Easton: I really like the converted tank. Great details and I love the "slapped-on" atmosphere of the deathskullz camouflage. I think it is a fantastic finish to an army full of character.

@jpobrich: Your army is another one of those that has grown on me. It looks simply amazing.

@kenny3760: That model is fantastic. I cannot think of another model that would make a better final entry.

@all: Thanks for the past 12 months. It has been a pleasure to partake in this collective endeavour. Irregardless of whether you join us next year or not, I wish you all happy hobbying and gaming.

Re: Tale of 40K Painters, July/August 2009: Final submissions thread!

Fredmans if ever a series of postings could prove the saying 'better late than never' then it is your last 3. Great work and to carry on my little awards thing I'd have to award your Nids the Best Epic Force Award. I'm very much looking forward to what you do over the next year. Also thank you for your kind comments. I know both the Herald and the Bloodthirster have turned out better than they would have done if I'd done them this time last year.

misterboff - thanks for your comments. I'm glad I left the herald so I could do justice to such a great classic model.

Discord - I also have misgivings about fielding a mixed army but as the aim was to improve my painting and get a whole army done I couldn't pass up the new plastics. I just wish the Beast of Nurgle model was more to my liking then I would probably do a completly Nurgle force.

You'd improve your painting even more if you did an army for each god... (That's actually what I intend to do. Tzeentch goes first, because all-Nurgle is silly in fantasy.) I solved the beast-bit by hunting down some older beast sculpts to accompany two new ones. And a pack of chaos spawn, just need some green stuff to make the snail part. I mean, I do need at least seven.

Fredmans, your armies are neat as always. I'm still waiting to see what you come up with this year. That joker was a letdown. And I don't properly know how to play BFG either (okay, I've read the rules once and played a simple testgame), you shouldn't let minor details like that stop you from buying more minis!
Take a look at my painting thread!
WFB, 40k, Epic, BFG, Hell Dorado, Confrontation and more!
